I hate to say this, because I really WANTED to love Carl. At first he was personable, and after moving back to Seattle I was looking for a good mechanic. But when I took my car in for minor work involving my headlights, he couldn't seem to have it done when he said he would. Worse, he got very agitated when I tried to press him for a time when it would be finished, and balked at when i called to say i might be 5-10 min to pick it up, after he kept me waiting for days. Then he called me back to say it wouldn't be done, as the door handle on my car had broken just as he was talking to me. I had to pay for that to be repaired, too, so I was out of a car for even longer. He seemed to be very manic, all "don't you worry, I'm gonna take care of this" one minute, and then next defensive and rude. I'd rather get my car repaired without having things broken in the process, and I can do without the emotional roller coaster, too.

My boyfriend once waited with me for more than an hour in a line that stretched outside the store and around the block, so that I could get inside the yearly sale here. I compared it to opening day of the baseball season, and he got it. The shoes fit a certain hipster-yet-girly look that's hard to describe, and hard to resist. Colorful, original shoes from Sigerson Morrison, Cydwoq, Coccinella, and brand you probably haven't heard of. Plenty of selections that are sexy, yet walkable. The prices are steep, but a good pair of boots here is a worthy splurge in my book. It will keep you looking hip all season, and next year, too. They also carry Orla Kelly bags and other colorful leather good and accessories, as well as some whimsical scarfs and accessories. Get on their mailing list and get to the sales early!! Bring your boyfriend(s) so he can go get you coffee while you wait. What's more perfect than that?

Nirvana Day Spa in the Pearl District is nothing like the band. More like rocking the Casbah with it's Morrocan-throne style pedicure stations. It's a little awkward to be balancing a mimosa while getting your toes scrubbed, but you get used to it. Get on their email list and you'll receive some good discounts. Nail services here aren't cheap, but they are comprehensive and relaxing. It's good place to book a bridal shower group or girls night. Try the chocolate scrub treatment for feet. It may sound a little gross, but in reality it is a great way to soften your tootsies and feed your senses. Make sure you book well in advance, as this place can fill up fast.

This charming little dessert café is the perfect date spot. It's open late on weekends, and is one of those classic Portland places that feels cozy and chic at the same time. The real star are the tiny tarts and desserts that are rich enough to share, if you dare. Try the Amelie, a chocolate and grand marnier confection, or the lava cake. If chocolate's not your thing (who are you?) there are fruit-based options such as inventive little tarts, as well as coffee drinks, an array of imported wines, beer, even champagne. Pix often hosts movie nights, classes and other events. The prices are reasonable, particularly considering the quality of the offerings. They are handmade and beautifully presented. For those who notice the details, this place is a gem. Viva la France, et Toujours Pix!

Thai Tom is tiny, inexpensive, delicious, and doesn't take reservations. Plan to spend some time on the sidewalk outside waiting for a table, or better yet, a seat at the counter so you can watch the action from the open kitchen.Everything here is good and if you order several stars, you will see them. The food is as spicy as you request it. Vegetarian options, excellent pad Thai and swimming rama, and don't miss the soup. You'll be surrounded by UW students, but even if you're well past graduation it won't matter. The food is reliably tasty, portions are huge, and it's fun to watch the owner, Tom, work his magic over an open flame. This is one of those Thai diners that will keep you coming back. There are more than 300 Thai restaurants in Seattle but I think this is one of the best. Only one complaint: sometimes the Thai tea or Thai iced coffee is a tad weak. It's not perfect, but it's close.

Russian for "bath," the banya is an old-world tradition. Banya 5 gives it a hip setting and a new-age twist. For $25 you can spend as long as you like in the whirlpools, steam room, sauna, cold plunge pool or tepid saltwater pool, not to mention a snooze in the somewhat spartan "nap room" upstairs. Finish it off with complimentary black tea sweetened in the Russian way, with a dollop of jam. The locker room and facilities are pristine, hip, and modern. You'll find many Russians come here, and often use the traditional bundles of leaves to create more heat in the sauna by smacking themselves and each other with the branches. Don't be alarmed-- it's not mandatory! Spa scrubs and massage are also available for an additional charge. There are co-ed days where everyone wears swim wear, and single-sex days where patrons wear nothing. Suit yourself! It's a great place to relax and worth the price.
