Great neighborhood bar during the week, and usually totally packed on weekend nights. No outdoor seating but the entire upper windows swing out (up?) so it's pretty open air and a great place to go on a summer evening. In addition they usually have pretty good specials - like Amstel for $2/bottle or something like that, so you can afford to just stop in whenever.
It's hard to tell the total age of people there - definitely some college-age, but some older, into their 30s probably. I had heard it was a firemen's hangout but I have not noticed that personally.

I had a good massage here, and I'd go back. The lady definitely knew what she was doing and chatted normally throughout - sort of like when you get your haircut as opposed to when sometimes it seems places try to make massages a sexy experience. The individual steam room and shower were both very clean, and they didn't rush you. Not cheap or I would recommend this more, but it was a decent massage.

I have had several different people cut and/or do my hair and it was good every time. I have had totally decent luck just taking whomever I could get when I needed my hair done up for a specific occasion and it was always done well. The prices are pretty reasonable and they pretty much operate on time.
I also have had manicures and pedicures here and while the atmosphere wasn't as relaxing as a regular spa and it wasn't a bargain, they did a good job and it lasted well.

Timothy John has some really talented stylists and the prices are great - under forty dollars for a woman's cut and style. However, I did get a bad style when I just wanted it done for a black-tie event, so I would not recommend trying someone new for an important event. It was horrible and I had to re-do my hair - even my then-boyfriend realized how bad it was before I said anything. However, the haircuts have been great and the price makes it worht the effort. Don't be scared off by the less than enthusiastic receptions. They stylists are all very pleasant and friendly in addition to being talented.

The Berghoff is a great Chicago restaurant. The food is good and plentiful. The service is excellent. Your water glass will be refilled all the time without your even noticing. It's perfect for lunch or dinner, from meeting with casual friends to a formal celebration. And the prices are amazing considering it's downtown - a perfect place to take a big group of people because you'll actually be able to afford the bill. The cost will vary greatly based on what you order and whether you have dessert, drinks, etc. The dessert is worth trying to.
Also, as a quaint aspect, next door to the main restaurant is an old-fashioned (just because it never changed) stand-up deli - you can get sandwiches made quickly - still German food - and either take it to go or eat it standing up at high tables.

Really good food - substantial but not too heavy. Good presentation and good atmosphere. Just as appropriate for an after work drink, dinner before the theater, a night out with friends, or a business lunch. Steak, salmon, salads, etc.
The outdoor seating is pleasant, and the indoor area is extensive - both first and second floors.

Very cool women's clothes; a lot more character and more of an edge than you would find at the mall, and more like what you could find at a trendy boutique in a big city. There's always a selection of European clothes and shoes, purses, etc. There also is some fashion jewelry, etc. The problem is that the prices are as high as you would find in some very expensive Chicago boutiques but the clothes here is not as good. So all in all, exciting to go into, but you could find a better value somewhere else.

This bookstore is the best of both worlds - they have the local flavor as only an independently owned bookstore can. They actually care. They offer small book clubs and other cute, small-town like features, but also offer all that a Border type store can - all the best sellers, pre-orders of Harry Potter to get right at midnight, etc. Definitely a bookstore worth going to.

Ernie's is famous locally and his prices are worth driving to from farther away.
I think there are somewhat limited hours, but they are very careful, meticulous, and very cheap. Kind-of like the independent auto mechanics you see in movies - actually own it themselves so they have low overhead and have a vested interest in making sure they fix your car right. Very reasonable charges.

On the west side of Clark, just north of Fullerton - I wouldn't have though it was already 2800 north, maybe more like 2600?
Anyway - they have a huge outdoor area, in front, so plenty of air circulation. Reasonably priced beer, plus burgers and other diner-type food. There are always plenty of people there - it's a great place to enjoy the cool evenings, or meet for weekend lunch. There are always plenty of people watching opportunities so it's perfect for a somewhat not-yet-comfortable casual first date.
