You can get good Mexican food all over the bay area especially up and down International Ave. in Oakland. Occasionally though, you find yourself in Alameda and needing a little something to eat. If you're in the mood for Mexican, try La Pinata on Park St.
The food is what you'd expect it to be, tasty basic. But one great thing they offer is half size plates. Believe me, half size is more than enough for most folks, especially if you go through a basket of chips while you're waiting.
The staff is always friendly and efficient and that frequently means more to me than anything.
They have a nice bar in the back, great margs, a wide selection of tequilas and delicious fish tacos.

As I'm always looking for ways to avoiding setting foot in the nightmare that is Home Depot, I was thrilled to find that Laurel Hardware not only carries everything i need and more in the way supplies, but has a friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff.
Take your DIY problem into Laurel Hardware and they will tell you how to solve it and guide you the products you need to get the job done.
They have almost everything I've ever dreamed of needing for my house renovation as well as many of the things i would have normally gotten on a trip to Target. They are a lot like Cliff's Variety in San Francisco in that way.
I love this place and now that they are open 7 days a week, I only have to go to H.D. for lumber.

Well I think it's the best Irish bar in San Francisco because it has the friendliest bartenders in the whole city. They're chatty and jokey and a regular joy.
The bar has something like 20 beers on tap and the requisite Bass and Guiness are available. Order a pint and some garlic mushrooms and you'll feel the trip was worth it.
If you're in to games or trivia, the Chieftain gets busy and boisterous for both of those things. (Tuesdays for trivia if you're into that.)
They also have a fantastic happy hour but really, what more do you need now that you know they have great beer and super friendly staff?

Le Charm has several great things going for it. The food is delicious bistro fare so have a Kir Royale and settle in for something hearty.
The 2 great things they have (outside of tasty food) are a Prix Fixe menu that gets you an appetizer, main course, and dessert for about $30, and outdoor dining in a courtyard when the weather is nice.
The decor isnt flashy but neither is the staff pretentious. The food is simple French fare. It's a nice switch from the ordinary.

Subway, I spit on you. You are nothing NOTHING compared to a real sub shop!
Now, let's discuss the beauty of the Happy Hoagie. For me, it can be summed up in 2 words: garlic sauce. The garlic sauce is the H.H.'s signature dressing and comes on all sandwiches unless you are fool enough to request otherwise. Ok, if you order egg salad i can see how you might reasonably forego garlic sauce. But that's the ONLY TIME!
Okay, so back to the subs. They are big and delicious and stacked with good ingredients and you can get them, wait for it.....TOASTED. The only thing that could make the place perfect would be if the sandwiches were cheap. But wait! They are!! A regular Roast beef and cheese, for example, is $3.85!
You will not regret a trip to the Happy Hoagie especially on a nice day when you can walk a block at eat your sub al fresco at the little Brisbane park. Ahhh. Lovely.

I know, you can get paint from home depot. But if you want really good paint, or you need advice from someone other than a disgruntled teenager, or you need to find products like spar varnish or powdered concrete stain go to Marks Paint.
In addition to a friendly and supremely knowledgeable staff, Marks has high quality Benjamin Moore paint. Believe me folks, you get what you pay for when it comes to paint. You think that Behr and Glidden stuff from home depot is cheap but when it takes you twice the number of gallons because the coverage sucks, you'll think twice about the extra few bucks you pay for good paint. This particularly true on exteriors.
Marks was a great find and we regularly drive past the H.D. and 2 other paint stores to get to it. It's worth it.

The Nursery Department in the Long's on Broadway is one of the best sources for plants in the East Bay. They have a great and changing selection of california natives, trees, annuals, veggies and herbs, and everything else you could hope for from your nursery.
As an added bonus, the prices of the plants are very reasonable and their indoor garden center has a great selection of all the non-living stuff you need for your yard.
Be warned though, there is every chance you will be in line behind someone buying 6 bags of bull manure and, my friends, it does NOT smell good.

When i want a solid, old-style hamburger, i go straight to Burger Orchard. It's located in a store-front attached to the Encinal Market that appears to have started life as a diner in the 50s. The floors are linoleum checker board and the booths are plastic and ratty. It's the PERFECT ambiance for old fashioned hamburger.
Getting a burger is not fast because it's hand pattied, personally grilled, and assembled like your dad did it when you were a kid. And that's what Burger Orchard hamburgers taste like: homemade hamburgers.

I like Oil Changers as a chain for 1 reason: you never have to get out of your car. There's no sitting in a meager waiting room with copies of car and driver; no sitting packed into plastic chairs next to the other sad folks who've finally had to come get their oil changed.
I like the Oil Changers in Alameda specifically because the staff is fantastic. They are fast, friendly, reasonably priced and I've never had to wait for more than one car. And if i do have to wait for someone in front of me, the staff cleans my windows. It's the little things really.

As transplanted Memphian (as in Memphis, TN, the capital of BBQ) I'm ever on the lookout for good barbecue. I have yet to find anything better than passable. That includes the popular Everett & Jones.
The food tends to be greasy and inconsistent. More than once i've ended up with a plate of fat and gristle that should have been sifted out. The beans are mostly tasteless. The cornbread forgetable. I had reasonably good chicken once at the berkeley location but nothing to write home about. And the service at any location is ALWAYS terrible.
The food is even worse than what you find at this Armadillo Willie's ridiculousness in the South Bay.
I've tried most of the recommended "secret" and hidden bbq spots in the bay area and the quality is not great at any of them. I found excellent hot links at Chef Edwards in downtown Oakland. If you want good pit roasted meat, go the the Hick'ry Pit in Walnut Creek. If you want actual, acceptable, good bbq, drive to Salinas and go to Smalley's.
