Looking for something entertaining for your 2 - 7 year old? The Richmond Children's Museum is a wonderful place to start. The museum has many interactive exhibits, such as a mouth children can walk into to demonstrate the digestive process. Beware of obscenely funny sounds! There is a grocery store and apple orchard in which kids can role play. There is a tree house and cave children can climb around. There is a large room dedicated exclusively to crafts. Periodically temporary exhibits are featured, such as dinosaurs. There is also a play area for younger children with a gate. It can become over crowded with older siblings at times.
This is a great place to host a birthday party. We had our older daughter's 3rd birthday party there last year with great success. The museum buddy assigned just for your party keeps things moving - and that's important for preschoolers! I forgot the candles for the cake and the hostess even had spare ones!
Weekends can be a bit cramped, but weekday mornings are usually not too bad - look out for the occasional school group.
Also, look for coupons for one free child's admission with the purchase of an adult admission on the box of Ukrop's brand cereals!

Canterbury Texaco, located in the far west end of Richmond on the corner of Patterson Avenue and Pump Road, is a Richmond institution. They have served the area for more than 25 years and offer exceptional service at a fair price. If you are a regular customer and find yourself stranded, the owner will gladly tow your car (within a reasonable distance) for free. The mechanics are trustworthy and dependable. This is especially helpful if you are not knowledgeable (like me) about cars.

Personalized gifts are a big rage these days and Babystuff is a great resource for fun children's' gifts. Everything from popcorn bowls to photo frames to diaper boxes (great for keepsakes later), all personalized in house while you wait. Recently I purchased an adorable pleather backpack for my four year old and within 20 minutes I walked out the door with it personalized.
Please note, at the time of this review, the address listed is not accurate. The Ridge location closed and the correct location is on Lauderdale Drive across from Short Pump Town Center.

The Westhampton Cinema is without question, a Richmond institution. Located On the Avenues (Libbie and Grove area), it attracts both old money characters and new hip folks. The common attraction is the alternative film. It's a refreshing alternative to the cramped local cineplex showing the latest blockbuster.
No matter what, you are guaranteed a thought provoking, get out of your normal box experience!

Edo's Squid is without question one of the hidden gems in the Richmond area. It's located on top of a greasy spoon in the heart of VCU (Harrison Street). Even for the die hard suburbans, it's worth the drive. Specials are posted nightly on written pads on the wall. Every dish reflects the chef's passion with garlic and fresh foods. Occasionally the restaurant runs short on squid, unfortunately, but there is always a wonderful alternative. I especially love the endive salad, scungili (sp.?) appetizer, amazing lamb chops and Pasta Karl.
Worth a drive. Be cautioned, the place is LIVELY on weekends and quiet, intimate tables against the wall are hard to come by during peak times.
