Before there was a term for it, this spot had already perfected the "fast casual" dining concept. For more than 12 years, Caffe Baci has been serving upscale coffee, paninis, salads, soups, and hot entrees in Chicago's Loop without the wait that would accompany comparable sit-down restaurants. Executive Chef Jimmy Hamili offers Italian cooking from his native Rome and has been turning out new specials and old standbys, like the JoJo panini (mozzarella, artichokes, basil, prosciutto, tomatoes and herbs) almost since the beginning of Baci's reign. The bright-yet-minimalist setting acts like a serene refuge from the office both at lunchtime and after work when dinner entrees are hot and inviting.

With rose-marbled walls, crystal chandeliers, gold plaster ornamentation and huge mirrors, this theater has the look and atmosphere of a French palace. Indeed, the space -- originally opened in 1926 as a vaudevillian showcase -- was modeled after Versailles. Located next door to the Hotel Allegro (formerly the Bismarck Hotel), the venue is part of the development of a revived Randolph Street theater district. The 2,300-seat theater, with orchestra, dress circle and balcony, was renovated at a cost of $20 million. After the Cadillac division of General Motors purchased naming rights, the Cadillac Palace opened with its inaugural production of "Aida" in November 1999.

Chef-owner Shri Tikka Ram Sharma has been in the kitchen for over 30 years -- he did stints at both Bombay Palace and Bukara in Chicago, and owned restaurants in Omaha, Nebraska and Champaign-Urbana, before opening this Lincoln Park eatery. Appetizers include favorites like samosa, a crispy turnover stuffed with seasoned potatoes, peas and coriander, and pakora, chickpea-battered and deep-fried vegetables. Items prepared in the tandoor clay oven are a house specialty, and include choices like marinated lamb chops, jumbo prawns and a whole pomfret (butterfish). Vegetarian offerings include saag paneer, fresh spinach and house-made cottage cheese with spices, and bhindi masala, okra with onions, tomatoes and spices. Mango kulfi, an Indian-style mango ice cream is one of the dessert choices. The weekend lunch buffet, which features a variety of favorites, is offered for under $10

The large menu features dishes from India and Pakistan, with several tandoor specialties, including marinated lobster and lamb chops. Kadhai gosht, a mildly spiced dish of boneless lamb cooked in an iron wok with tomatoes, onions and garlic, is a house specialty, as is the raan-e-khyber, a whole leg of lamb marinated in almond paste, yogurt and saffron and roasted in the tandoor. There are several vegetarian options, including the tandoor sabzi, which is a combination platter of marinated vegetables that are roasted in the tandoor oven.

The store features the signature Swad brand, and includes a large selection of ready-to-eat and frozen foods. Dry goods include several dals, (the generic term for dried legumes, including peas, beans and lentils), flours and a variety of rice. Chutneys, pickles, spices, fruit purees and other items essential for Indian cooking line the aisles. Creativity and color distinguish Indian Garden from the rest of the ethnic pack. Chef Ganga Rawat substitutes corn oil for traditional fat and creates gravy-based dishes with vegetables and spices rather than oils. Unusual dishes from the clay tandoor oven include the signature reshmi kebab--chicken marinated in yogurt and spices and cooked in a copper pan. Nearly half the extensive menu is devoted to meatless dishes. The special dinners, essentially combination plates, are a good way to explore the menu. The Streeterville location is one of three Indian Garden spots; one is located on Devon near Western and a third is in Schaumburg. This one though is the best and in the heart of the city.

With its slick black-and-red interior and sophisticated lounge-y vibe, this Ukranian Village club could easily be pretentious -- but you won't find any attitude here. There are plenty of booths and tables along the walls, and the bar is located smack dab in the middle of the medium-sized-yet-spacious space. The dancefloor does get crowded when resident and guest DJs spin sets ranging from reggae to techno to retro tunes. Best part? Every type of person fits in, whether you sip cosmos or chug cheap brews -- darkroom is practically a haven for world peace. If you hate going to bars where people bump into you with nary an "excuse me", this is the place for you.
