Hello World has a lot of funky, electric and great items. It is a little pricey, but you are bound to impress the recipient if you buy a gift there. On prominent display in the window is some of the cutest purses you have ever seen! inside, you will find lamps, pillows, knick knacks, accessories, jewelry - some new, some vintage.
Hello World feels like a store you want to open - the owners pick whatever catches their eyes and most of it will catch your eyes too. Most things here are one of a kinds or very hard to find and it's definitely worth a trip to browse about aimlessly, as I spend many a Saturday doing.

Ten Thousand Villages sells a variety of handmade products from around the globe, for which they pay a fair price. The salespeople love to tell you the story behind the products, which makes for a great conversation piece when you are displaying things.
Their linens, pillows and tapestrys are beautiful and very fairly priced. They have knick knack galores and random pieces of beauitfully handcrafted furniture. They sell holiday decorations, jewelry and kids' toys and decorations. In addition, they have some incredibly beautiful handmade photo albums, handmade stationary, gift cards and gift bags.
We have bought housewarming presents, birthday presents, Christmas presents and stuff just for us and have always been received a lot of compliments. And the fact that the store has such a great mission makes you feel good to spend your money there.

The AIA touts itself as a bookstore, which they have lots of, but they also have a great selection of kids' toys, books and other gifts.
In addition, they have some really quirky and funky housewares, like clocks and knick knacks. While the price is a little high, their pieces are definitely unique and worth the money.
They also have a great sample of stationary, including - oddly enough - some really great holiday cards. We bought cards to send to our clients last year from here and they were a big hit.
This is the type of store you can wander around in for a while and hear yourself say "cool" or "wow" about 200 times.

This store is great for sending packages to former PA natives living across the country. They have all sorts of great local foods and candies (and chocolate covered pretzels to die for). They sell great gift baskets online too and if you buy something from them, you get on their mailing list and can see their cool catalog.
They also sell "real food" like local soups and nuts. They sell fun crafts and souvenirs and books on Philly.
I've used this company a few times for sending gift baskets to clients and it's been a big hit.

Buca believes in family style portions, so bring your family. Unless you and your significant other like to eat mountains of food and/or have mountains of leftovers.
The atmosphere of Buca is a chain restaurant attempting to be a little, local Italian joint. The decor includes Frank Sinatra paraphenalia, a lot of old time photos and luckily only in Jenkintown, a replica of the pope's head. Why anyone would want to sit at a table with the pope staring at them is beyond me, but my catholic guilt kicked in just seeing it.
Anyway, the food is good, though not outstanding. it is a fun place to go with a group of people and sample a lot of different things.

They are greasy, they are drippy (spread your legs when you eat them). But they are decent.
The line is always long. The parking is always terrible. The staff are usually pretty short.
But EVERYONE goes there at least once, and ineventually must answer the question for themselves - pat's or geano's. Of the two, I'd take Geano's. Out of all the places you could conceiveably go, I'd go elsewhere.
But when in Philly, do as the tourists do at least once.

I think it was just the waitress we had, but we were really disappointed with the service. They apparently give you complimentary bruschetta. We would have loved that. However, in our case, they gave everyone BUT us complimentary bruschetta.
They had great specials, but we didn't know because our waitress never told us about them. We heard them from other wait staff telling other customers.
However, their food - despite our grumblings and pre-determination to NOT like them - was quite good. Very authentic Italian food. The Bolognese sauce was as good as some restaurants I've eaten at IN BOLOGNA.
So, although the service for us stank, I'd go back because the food was so good.

Yes, it is expensive (no student discount that I can see), but you can get chicken fingers, pretzel bites, pizza and ice cream and fancy coffee there. I love this movie theatre and will willingly pay tolls for the bridge to come over (versus going to a certain Philly theatre on Del Ave).
In addition to having a fabulous snack bar, they also have the ability to prepurchase tix online, so - for example - the opening night of star wars, we were able to walk right in, print out our tix, get great dinners and the only wait was the line to get into the actual theatre where the movie was playing.

Decent food, reasonable prices, convenient location and hours. The wait staff tends to be a little abrasive, but in light of having to deal with the South Street clientele, I suppose it's understandable.
I highly recommend the egg and bacon on a bagel to cure those hangover blues

It has got a good selection of alcohol and beer, and it is reasonably priced. There is also a decent wine selection. While it may not be a super glamorous store, it is clean, the staff is relatively knowledgable and tend to be fairly helpful. Parking is also quite convenient.
