For those of you who thought southern American cooking could not be elegant, head to Vidalia. This downstairs restaurant has a chef who's made a religion of southern regional cuisine. Martinis are the way to start, followed by a bottle of wine from the well-chosen list. Collard greens never tasted so good! Be warned though - you're going to pay for that elegance. But it's worth it!

Al Tiramisu somehow manages to be a neighborhood restaurant even while catering to a varied crowd. The food is solidly authentic, with homemade pastas that are worth trying. Make sure you ask the price of the daily specials, though, as the servers frequently don't mention them, and you might be in for a shock otherwise. The wine list is a bit pricey but it's well-thought out.

Banana Cafe is a funky little restaurant that doubles as a piano bar upstairs. The kitchen is reliable, if not spectacular, offering Cuban, Puerto Rican and Mexican dishes. The margaritas are a bit weak and the servers are usually overwhelmed, but this little restaurant has a charm even with these minor problems. Go for the crowd and for some decent food. Outdoor seating is a bonus in the summer.

Tapatinis, across from the Marine Barracks on 8th and I Sts. SE, is the place to go for martinis. From the classics to the outrageous new inventions, Tapatinis serves them all well-chilled. The vibe is cool and hip, without the political geeks that typically populate Capital Hill bars. Friday happy hour offers a $25-all-you-can-drink martini special - lucky the Eastern Market metro is only a few blocks away!

Pazo takes the concept of tapas, or little plates, to a lovely new height. Immediately on entering you catch the vibe of this hip, young and beautiful crowd - dress to impress! The two levels offer two distinct feels - downstairs is more see-and-be-seen, upstairs a bit more romantic and intimate, with a large room for private parties as well. The food is interesting and with the prices, you can easily fill up on several tapas for very little money. The wine list is well-thought-out and many choices are available by the glass.

If mole is what you seek, head to Guajillo. Set in a not-very-promising appearing strip mall on Wilson Blvd., Guajillo will surprise you with authentic Mexican food and reasonable prices. The ceviche is freshly made and abundant; and the daily specials are worth checking out if you're not in search of some of the best mole sauce in the region. The servers - most of them native speakers of Spanish - can steer you in the right direction, so don't be afraid to ask for recommendations.

Tacqueria Poblano is a great little find on Mt. Vernon Ave. in Del Ray. The inviting, low-key interior is welcoming. The servers are friendly and helpful. And the food is authentic and consistently delicious. The chips are house-made, as are the salsas, but you won't want to fill up on them, no matter how good they are. Try the various tacos - all priced individually so you can try several different flavors. The margaritas you have with your meal will be ice-cold and perfectly proportioned. Definitely worth a trip for this little gem.
