Ok, so the people are really friendly -- they act like they know you already, the produce is really fresh, clean and good tasting, and they have some really good canned/dried items like organic boxed chicken broth, flatbreads, or even Lan Chi's Chili Paste with Soybean Paste--a la Chinatown. There's a little bit of a mark up in prices, given the late-night availability of this bodega, but really prices are quite reasonable given this context; and not so much that it woudn't be a place you could go for your daily produce. The store is always clean, pleasant, and it has a very nice orange cat. It's laid back, so you don't have to worry about it running up to you, if you're allergic. But if you like cats, it's also very approachable.

Ok, so I'm late to the plastic joy bandwagon, but better late than never. So hip is the urban Asian aesthetic, probably helped by the weak dollar abroad, who knows!, that even the Americans and Brits are doing their thing. The side-hobby of some of the world's industrial designers have turned to making these little plastic cartoon-like creatures, not reliant on stale uninspired brands like Barbie & GI Joe, nor on dominant media of Star Wars/Trek, not even on the more creative, but old Asian aethetic currency of the robot or superhero/antihero/bug/mechanical, obsessive, detailed, with a sort of the fetish of a super-realistic space age. No, this store sells creations slightly more abstract and expressive... a odd-shapped man that looks like he's made of wood and glass though it's actually plastic (by Michael Lau) is found among hundreds of creatures encased in the shelves of this little store. There's a piece that's simply a couch with a large over-sized cat head (separate piece). It's both disturbing and evokative. It seems to express something about the depressing nature of the TV set (though there is no TV); and at the same time, is fun to look at, a joke. Super fake but hyper real, good modern art, challenging, and leaving you with a lot of questions and even more to say. The color palatte these artists use are subtle, sophisticated, and really have an aesthetic impact. Sure some of the stuff is more juvenille or mawkishly dark a la Spike-and-Mike's Twisted Animation... but then again, much of the audience for this stuff IS FOR the pre-high school grad, so why not. There's much more to say about this place (like how you buy these things like baseball cards, without knowing which figure you're going to get; or like the following that a particular artist has among the crowd), but why not check it out yourself. It started as a website, then a store in SF, last year one in NY, and another in LA. Go. Before it gets stale and old or hyped and over, while the raw life is still beating in it & while you can still see it not through comment and category, but with your own eyes...

Ok, so there's like 5 restaurants total in my neighborhood. I include the diner and pizza joint. So, this place doesn't have to be nearly as good as it is. Bleu has really nice decor, including an old abused player piano, dinning couches, and an outdoors wooden deck, with charming hanging tchotchkas; also, a full bar. Though it is on the pricey side, for a normal night out, it's not too bad for a "nice" restaurant. The fare is Euro-American type stuff, cooked carefully, with a sensitive palate. It's not pretentious, despite it's name.
Personally, I like the large oversized sculpted metallic letters B L E U, that hovers above the awning, like a fun house or Stan's dounuts.

Wants to destroy the separation of Church and State. Wants to roll back Roe v. Wade. Willing to take country into war but lie about reasons for war. Uses 9/11 to justify taking away American Civil Rights & anything else he wants to do. Can't speak English. A failure in business.
I highly suggest you vote for a different president.

This is a really nice studio... not because the facilities are amazing or the space is gorgeous, but because it's a good place for a printmaker to get things done where people won't bother you too much, but are also very friendly, if you want to be bothered. Every one is an artist there, so people take good care of the equipment.I remember taking a class at Cooper Union. Cooper had GREAT facilities that cost tons of money, but the light table was all scratched up from student abuse, etc. You won't find that at MGC. Things might be old, but in workable condition. They have classes in all aspects of printmaking. They have several printing presses and a very small darkroom. You can do lithography, printing, silkscreen, photogravure, aquatinting there. All at very reasonable prices. If you are taking a class, you have a shelf for the duration of the class. But if you buy studio time for a session (about 13 weeks), you also can get shelf space.

My friend Bonnie organized a New York Taco Crawl based on Eric Asimov's review of some Taco joints maybe last year. Thanks to her, I've found my favorite taco place in the city. This looks like a crummy railroad architectured bodega from the outside & even when you step inside. Chips, beer, beef jerky, soda, whoa... All the way in the back, there's a little window, a chaulk board menu & a few seats. Out of that little window come some of the best Tacos you can eat. When I came back from California, I was depressed at not having decent Mexican food in NY... Man, you've may not even miss the Mission if you smack your lips on these babies. And cheap. My favorite is the beef tongue taco, but they have all the standard stuff, carnitas, chicken, fish, etc. And there is usually no one there. I'm so glad places like this exist.

The feng shui in this little union street cafe is just what you think of when you want to use "brunch" as a verb (e.g. "let's brunch!"). Intimate, bright, quaint, casual, comfortable, this place has pleasant decor which is perfect for a weekend chomp with 1 or 2 friends... any more than that really becomes a question of space.
The food is pleasant, not overabundant, but enough. The feel of a standard Euro-Am food cuisine, that feels like they added a twist (good thing); though it really is just Euro-Am food.
All and all, it's worth taking off your robe, punching into some jeans, and walking around the corner to meet a friend here.

If you are looking in the Jackson Heights, Queens (New York) area, I suggest using Mercedes as one of your agents. In the 3 boroughs of NY City & New Jersey, and looking at over 100 apartments over 2 years with different agents, she was BY FAR my favorite agent. She's specialized in JH for decades, is very low pressure, extremely friendly, without the sense of sleeze you often get in agents, & she represents some good property. Of course, in JH, you'll need to look with more than 1 agent, since not everything is on MLS. She's good too because she's been in the neighborhood for years, so people, rightfully, trust her & give her businesses (aka good properties). I always enjoyed seeing places with her, talking about the books she & I have been reading, and even though she brought me to a million places over a long span of time, she STILL kept me up to date & STILL didn't apply any hard sell techniques. I ended up buying in a different neighborhood, so regrettably, didn't end up using her. But I know she handled another friend of mine's closing. I wish I had been able to give her business myself. Another good agent/intro to Jackson Heights is Daniel Karatzas (he wrote a book on the area).

Close, but not too close to BAM, so you have a nice walk into brownstone Ft. Greene to impress your date with your knowlege of this charming neighborhood. The food is good, your waiter/ess might have a French accent, and in warmth, you can sit outside next to a non-busy residential street and feel like you are relaxed and have a touch of that sense of magically NY at it's best. It aint cheap, but really not too expensive either, for a date. A study in seduction. Have it in your repetoire.

MCI is a bad company, you should just never use them. Besides securities fraud and conspiracy, as claimed by our government against this ugly company when they were MCI WorldCom... they are a customer service nightmare.
For a FULL 2 YEARS after I cancelled long distance service with this joke of a company, they sent me bills!! Every few months I would call them & they would credit me, say they would fix it, & THEY WOULD CONTINUE TO SEND ME BILLS. Even after I cancelled service completely ( I still had them for local service for awhile ), they sent me bills & collection letters. After finally asking a sympathetic collections person (can you believe it a "sympathetic collections person"? see how bad mci is!?!) what sort of legal recourse I had against this harassing company, the bills finally stopped. This is service at its worth & probably criminal. Customer Service lines always took at least 30 minutes to speak to someone. I always felt sorry that these people had to work for such crap.
Switch to Working Assets. Working Assets the best customer service I've experienced in a telephone company. MCI JUST SUCKS.
