The UofO Bach Festival is no longer centered on the University campus. Far from it's humble beginnings in Beall Hall, this is a highly regarded program that is now conducted in the Hult Center for Performing Arts in downtown Eugene.
For over 30 years, conductor Helmuth Rilling has been the core of the Bach Festival. His support has made the Festival a highlighted national event that brings together music lovers, students and artists. Workshops, studio instruction and recitals fill the Bach Festival week and draw many visitors from out of town.
This is an event that is broadcast widely, including being presented on the BBC and US public radio. Recordings of the festival events are available as CDs through such mainstream outlets as BMG music and Amazon.com.

When the new Federal Courthouse is completed, the Shedd Institute will no longer be located at the edge of the Eugene downtown center, but along what the community hopes will be a strong new business corridor. The Shedd is housed in an old church and recent upgrades include a welcome air conditioning system.
The Shedd is a venue that allows world-class artists a quality performance location that is smaller than the nearby Hult Center. Recent performance schedules included Rickie Lee Jones, Chick Corea, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Philip Glass, Kathy Mattea, Judy Collins, and The Chieftans.
The Shedd is also home to OFAM - Oregon Festival of American Music. This a long-time, highlighted event in Eugene that draws thousands of attendees each year.

The old UofO Museum of Art had a major infusion of funding. Nearly doubled in size & revitalized, a visit to the museum is a great way to spend the afternoon. Entry fees are $5 (and less for seniors, museum membres and children.) Almost a secret is that the first Friday of every month is free admission!
There are striking permanent collections of Korean, Japanese and Chinese art, including interesting costumes & sculptures. The Chinese thrones have been sort of centerpieces for these displays for decades. There is also an on-going gallery showing European icons.
Most exciting are some of the recent special shows. Seeing Andy Warhol's work up close was awesome. Through June 2006 Van Gogh's painting "A Woman Walking in A Garden" will be on display along with a beautiful pointillist landscape by Henri Edmond Cross. Pointillist painters use tiny dots to create their works, and the Cross painting should not be missed.
On the University of Oregon campus. There is also a small gift shop and a cafe (a branch of the celebrated Eugene Marche restaurant.)

This downtown gallery shows some of the best -- and most avant garde -- art in Eugene. It's a fine local showcase, and the items on display are regularly updated and rotated.
The way the gallery works is that artists submit proposals and accepted shows are mounted for two months of display. They also offer how-to classes and special events, including screenings of movies.
The DIVA website at http://www.divanow.org is just a fantastic look into what you may find on display. There have been some powerful paintings, photos, collages, sculptures and constructed displays.
A great local service to artists, and wonderfully affordable way to see new and fresh work. At 110 W. Broadway, Eugene, OR 97401

Located in the Meridian center on Willamette and in the 5th Street Market, Uncommon Scents is all about fragrance, silky skin and comfort.
The shop specializes in "mix your own" scents. Those who won't dare can buy one of many pre-packaged fragrances. Whether you like musk or floral, mild or bold, there is a scent to suit you. Or no scent, if you want something with no fragrance.
This is another fantastic gift buying spot. Lots of fun soaps and bubbles for kids. Many luxury lotions and potions. Down-to-earth brushes for men with whiskers, fantastic razors in shapes like frogs or mermaids, high-quality hairbrushes and natural cosmetics. In recent years they've expanded the selection to include upscale silk bedding, beautiful robes and "Bucky" buckwheat filled pillows and heating pads. They also offer some jewelry and other fashion accessories.
Prices range from reasonable to rich.

Sandra Smalley's been the heart of Edgewood since 1994. She's a long-time vet in Eugene, and truly loves the animals and people she supports. Over the past few years two other vets have begun working at the clinic which makes it even easier to get an appointment when you need one.
The clinic is located at 40th & Donald, with plenty of easy to access parking. They are open from 8am to 6pm weekdays.
Caring people work here.

You'll find Jody Coyote jewelry in many gift shops & department stores. Many of the designs are distinct -- cartoony, embossed and embellished with things like stars & lightening bolts.
Just off West 11th Avenue you'll find Jody Coyote's outlet. Originally handcrafted, the jewelry is now specially manufactured and available across the nation. The outlet is a spot to pick up great gifts at discount pricing.
Watch for special sales -- especially near holiday gift giving times, the outlet clears out surplus. You used to be able to stock up on loose charms which were wonderful to craft with! You'll find everything from beaded earrings to sculpted wire, from rainbow niobium to sterling silver.

Zona offers a line of stylish clothing for women made from beautiful Tencel/rayon blends. The fabrics are hand-dyed, which makes for some lovely subtle colors. Most of all the clothing is soft and packs for travel really well. Crush it up, shake it out -- ready to wear. And! washable! Tumble dry!
Zona's been around for 20+ years. Most of the pieces can be considered "basic" that work well with other clothing. The fabric comes in various weights and weaves, and gets softer each time it is washed.
The retail store is a pretty stop along Willamette Street, with no pressure sales. You can also visit them and shop on-line.

Back in 1977 I worked next door to the original Down to Earth, where I bought my first set of matching glasses for our dining table.
Down to Earth has moved around town several times, now having two locations. One is at the edge of downtown Eugene -- on Olive Street, near the post office -- the other location is on Willamette Street. Parking for both locations can be a pain, but the easier of the two is downtown.
The selection at the downtown store is much larger. This is a wonderful place to gift shop, and the garden section is truly a pleasure to browse through. It's an organic gardeners dream, and prices are very affordable. They have a good selection of region appropriate plants, trees - as well as annual and perennial flowers, vegetable starts & seeds.
Both shops offer a small selection of greeting cards. There are soaps, tea balls and other cooking gadgets, some children's toys, wind chimes and things like socks and gardening gloves. The stock leans toward the functional and durable, but lovely to use and live with. I always make it a point to check out the stores at gift-giving time.
Today, Down to Earth appears to still be going strong. And I am still using some of those same glasses!

Folkways has been in Eugene for around 20 years. They feature beautifully made women's clothing with ethnic flair. Lots of soft flowing fabrics, silks and velvets, in colors ranging from pale to punchy.
The clothes might remind some of the mass produced "Chico's" line, but with a twist. The styles are Asian or Latin American influenced. Most are truly one of a kind pieces, because the fabrics and colors will vary.
Along with clothing and scarves, Folkways carries jewelry and other gift items. Prices range from reasonable to spendy. If you are patient you can sometimes get a good price, but if you wait you may never see the things you love in the shop again!
Great place to look for a special event outfit. I've had pieces last for years, and they are often so classic that the style doesn't look dated.
