Thundercloud Subs is a good place to go for a good cheap sandwich. The bread is pretty fresh and the meats are decent. I think of it as an Austin version of Subway. Not fantastic but good if you are in a hurry. I'm a fan of their turkey sub and their cheese sub. They also sell brownies and cookies that are pretty good too. I've been to several locations and my favorite is the comfy Lake Austin Blvd. locale.

Maria's Taco Xpress is another one of the great things about living in South Austin. Evolving from a little trailer into a full blown restaurant compound Taco Xpress serves up really tasty tacos for super cheap prices. A simple bean, potato, and cheese taco on a fresh tortilla never tasted soooo good. They are the best tacos I've ever had.
They make their own super fresh salsa. Parking is a bit of a hassle and the place can get very crowded on the weekends.

Mozart's is a really nice spot for after dinner coffee or a fun place for a early evening out. At the edge of Lake Austin, it is a coffee house with an elaborate deck and outdoor seating area. They make really nice fancy desserts too (a bit pricey). This is a nice place to take out of towners for a coffee with some nice scenery. It is part of the Hula Hut complex so parking is a bit of a problem.

Rounders on 6th street makes a pretty good floppy style slice. The pizzas are really big and filling. On the greasy side (I suspect some type of oil is used on the dough) but still a pretty good slice. They make really good garlic bread knots that the owner will usually throw in for free. The service can be a little spotty and its a real pain to park around back.
If you don't have time to make it up to Saccones this is probably the next best thing.

The Hog Island Deli on Lavaca is a really nice find for east coast style Italian deli sandwiches. A casual place that seems to attract a lot of folks who work in the Capital. They import their bread and meats from Philly so you know they are committed to East Coast flavor. Their Italian sub is awesome, lots of meats like ham, salami stacked on a super fresh roll. They have good chicken parm, cheese steaks and other hot sandwiches.

Baby Greens is really a unique little food place. Its a cute little hut on the corner of Oltorf and South 1st that sells gourmet salads to go. This is a dieter's dream. Fresh big salads (big enough for two people) made with lots of great veggies and topped with things like grilled chicken, bacon and pecans. They make their own homemade dressing which are really good - I enjoy the spicy Chile Lime. About $7 a salad but they feed two people. No more excuses for me to eat fast food when this healthy option is out there.

Tucked away in the Clarksville neighborhood, the West Lynn Cafe is a very nice lunch or dinner option for Vegetarians or meat-eaters. Very fresh vegetables and salads. I had a very good veggie burger and potatoes. Its a tiny bit fancy (white tablecloths and napkins) and quiet. So it would make a nice place for a date but not really a kid friendly atmosphere. Good prices for lunch and a little bit expensive for dinner.

Pok-e-jos is an Austin based little chain of BBQ joints. The BBQ is above average and the service is always very friendly. Its an order at the counter kind of joint with big rolls of paper towels on the tables. They have a really good turkey plate with sliced smoked turkey and two sides. The downtown 5th street location also has a really cheap party barn for private parties.

Texadelphia serves up Cheese steaks and curly fries that taste great. The 15th street location and the Sunset Valley location are both really comfortable with big booths. I find the Congress location to be dark and the food never seems quite as good there. The chicken cheesesteak is really tasty but does leave you feeling a little bogged down the rest of the day.

The Hula Hut is the kind of place you will want to visit about twice a year. The lake view is really good. They make great drinks - I recommend the trying one of their gigantic fish bowls. On the downside the Tex-mex food is just average, the parking is a big hassle, and it gets pretty crowded on the weekends. A fun place to go with co-workers but not a place you'll want to visit often.
