Newberry Books just opened for business at 65th and Ravenna in Seattle, selling used books and art cards (these are a favorite of mine so I noticed). The owner is very friendly and helpful. I was there to read at ProseWest so I didn't have much time to shop. There was plenty of seating, good acoustics, and drinks available for purchase. PoetsWest will also meet here once a month, ProseWest twice a month. I loved the collection of books I saw, so the owner also has taste. The had many classics, many best sellers and a good overall variety. Parking was plentiful and the neighborhood friendly.

The zoo staff recommended Tiki's Bar and Grill to us as the best place to eat nearby. So we tried it. We were thankfully given shady porch seats with a good breeze coming off the ocean enhanced by an overhead fan and lots of water. Service by a new waitress was somewhat slow and only occurred because management was making sure. Our food -- we both ordered shish kabobs was tasty and good, but mine had to be sent back three times in order to get it cooked well done. My advice, order a different entree if you like well done beef. The salad was sized for two, tasty and fresh and with lots of much appreciated fruit. A nice place to eat and a welcome rest after the zoo.

Coldstone Creamery cones are far too naughty for one person to eat alone. Average price is $5. What I didn't understand at first was you got to stir one add in -- fruit, nut, candy, etc. as an inclusion into your basic cone price. Cones varied in price also -- you paid additional and got waffle cones, and even more if they were chocolate dipped, had sprinkles or nuts on them. A good twelve flavors were offered. They also had sundaes with whipping cream, chocolate fudge and othe sauces and plenty of cherries. Very tasty but you might want to consider sharing one.

By making reservations in advance, my husband and I were treated to one of the more skilled chefs. He explained that near accidents had caused management to deem some of the knife throws and flames too dangerous, but we still recieved a good display of chopping, cooking, etc. that kept us amused and sampling tasty bites. The steak was cooked perfectly despite my own preference for well done and my husbands for rare. Meals are somewhat pricey, but worth every dime. A steak comes with rice -- we had the garlic rice for an additional $3, stir fried vegetables, and salad. Dessert was extra and came with our green tea ( a sneaky way of getting you to have green tea ice cream ).

The Bishop Museum provides an interesting and educational introduction to native Hawaiian and other Polynesian societies. See www.bishopmuseum.org for more information. We were able to get there by taking the #2 bus from Waikiki and riding for about 45 minutes before being set down about a block and a half away -- the bus driver provided directions. In addition to a museum containing the royal emblems, large feather dusters signifying their status, it also had masks, jewelry, clothing, hooks, jewelry, pottery and the like -- all examples first quality in workmanship. They also have a very well narrated planetarium and offer showings of authentic hula chants, dances and music. There's a gift shop on site and its air conditioned inside. It took about 2.5 hours to see most sites at our leisure.

We were able to book our tee times from home at Wailua Golf Course. The course fees included the cart, and renting pull carts cost only saved you $2 per person. One day it rained, the other day we played it got quite hot, so the cart was definitely appreciated. The course is well-maintained, several holes played alongside the coast, the 17th with a view of the par-3 hole looking over the water. A beautiful pond filled with hot pink lilypads was also attractive. A fairly difficult coarse that kept moving fairly well, although the rain slowed the game somewhat. Locals are friendly to out-of-towners.

The Poipu Beach broiler didn't have the steak I was looking for but we found tasty offerings that suited our appetite. I had the french dip and it turned out to be definately above average -- the dip sauce had rosemary which made it yummy. My husband ordered a grilled chicken sandwich that pleased him. The service was laid back but efficient. They served a plentiful supply of fries -- so much we weren't able to eat them all. The view looked out on a garden, the music system played hula, and the room was sufficiently cooled by fans in an open air Hawaiian style.

Panda Express was just the right evening snack after a day at the beach and the day still hot. We didn't really want to dress up and go any place special. Panda Express has a hot table of freshly cooked Chinese foods, many hot and spicy. My husband isn't a fan, but found he ate well when he ordered the Mandarin Chicken without the sauce. My favorites are the Kung Pao Chicken, Orange Chicken and spring rolls. You are able to order your choice of steamed or fried rice or chow mein noodles. I vary depending on how badly I want vegetables. Everything at this restaurant was hot and fresh, the staff efficient, the tables clean, and space in the garbage cans. See www.pandaexpress.com for more information.

Kauai Sands Hotel is a wonderful place to stay for the cost conscious traveler. Rooms are quite large, especially if you get a king sized bed. They have small refridgerators, a tv we never used, but not hair dryer (who needs one in Hawaii?), They have two small pools that are well maintained and well used. They are a beachfront hotel, you can walk about a mile in either direction, although if you walk toward the river, you need to follow the street until you come to the main park. It's also located next to the Coconut Marketplace where you can buy needed supplies, clothing, souvenirs, and get good food. Kauai Sands Hotel also has a restaurant, but we were always out and about and never tried it.

The Wailua Family Restaurant is located at the former site of a Sizzler's where I dined often the last time I was in Kauai. The owner's have kept a similar menu and the fantastic salad bar with hot items, fruit, salad makings, several types of soups etc. The salad bar is the only thing I can recommend. Admittedly, we were one of the few customers dining at 3pm, but our service wasn't very good and our chicken entree we ordered wasn't very tasty and needed to be cooked more. Unfortunately, we never saw a waitress to make that happen. I hope other visitors will find a different experience because that salad bar is a real treat.
