You love lobster? You like eating fresh food, prepared perfectly? You hate paying for ambiance and just want to enjoy the food and nothing else? You must eat at Abbott's in Noank, CT. This is an old time seafood shack with the best, freshest lobster, clams and shrimp around. I get their hot lobster sandwiches - think softball sized lumps of perfectly made, butter drenched lobster. Amazingly good and worth a trip from anywhere. My wife and I have driven there from New Jersey just for lunch - gives you an idea how good this place is?
Noank is off Rt. 95, just north of Mystic, CT.

One of my favorite business stories is about Allen Edmunds. The head of the company, when prevented from displaying their shoes at a business show in Japan, set up a table on the steps of the hall. He sold out his shoes and shamed the people who kept him out. I figured if this can happen in protectionist Japan, these must be great shoes. I bought a pair and discovered I was correct - these shoes ROCK! The quality, fit and style are classic, not cutting edge. And at this store, the salesmanship/customer service is first rate too.
We go to Maine every few years on vacation and I always come home with a pair (on occasion 2) of these great shoes.
Support a great American-made product (Wisconsin based) and do a favor for your feet.

I was on my way to Italy and wanted to soak up the atmosphere before, during and after my trip. After a hearty brunch at Good (on Greenwich as well) my wife and I spent another hour at this wonderful little mystery book store. The staff can be trusted to make expert recommendations - the real reason to shop at specialty shops like this. Their selection is broad - meaning they have more mysteries than even the big name stores we all visit. And, if you tell them what you like, they will make selections that build on your experience or maybe, send you in a new direction.
We need stores like this. We need people who work with passion in places like this. It's good for the book buying public and good for our cherished authors.

I visited early on a cold Sunday morning. It was a few minutes before they opened and as I was standing outside, I had the chance to chat up a local. She said, NY Times in tow, that Tartine had good coffee, great croissants and she loved eating here. When she sat down, the dark-haired cutie who was waiting tables didn't take her order - she just brought her a cup of coffee and an almond croissant. I duplicated her order and smiled as I tasted butter rich pastry and good coffee served with real half & half.
This was a scouting expedition, I will revisit for brunch and lunch in warmer weather (teens today with a wind chill).
It's a cash only BYOB place so you know all you need to know to do some exciting food exploring yourself.

I love Chinese food and I bet you do to (no, not just you Chairman Mao). So when my friends urged me to try Chengdu 46 in far-away Clifton, I bit and went. To describe their food as amazing borders on being an understatement.
Fresh ingredients. A killer Peking Duck. Great service. A nice room. And their take on the favorites is blessed with careful preparation and tons of flavor.
The food is that good - or at least it was on the night we visited. We all sat around looking at each other and agreed - the food her is just about perfect.
I can't wait to go back.

Dim Sum - Chinese finger food - is a special weekend treat at this stylish eatery. The variety, price and taste all rate high marks. If you have never had Dim Sum, here it is in a nutshell. Servers push small steam carts through the restaurant and you, tempted by their description or aroma grab a dish and start eating. The offerings range from vegi-dumplings to every shrimp, pork, beef, crab delight imaginable. At the end of the meal, they add up your bill by counting the dishes on you table. Neat idea...
The "regular" menu is good too - they do a great job with chicken and shrimp.
Their lunch special offerings are their weakest link - clearly their low price (most dishes under $6) is a limiting factor.
It's a pretty room and you can bring the family - I recommend their Dim Sum without hesitation.

I broke the mainspring on my Omega Speedmaster and found through the watch grapevine that this place was the best around to have it fixed. I drove there and met the owner - Ike - who is friendly, smart, honest and knows watches. He had my watch fixed in a couple of weeks and he was over a $100 less expensive than repair at Omega. It runs perfectly and I am very happy.
I also bought a new watch (IWC Mark IV) at a $1000 discount over the best price in NYC.
Enjoy good watches? Trust Blue Stove Antiques to buy, sell or repair.

The knock on all NJ A&P stores used to be that they were expensive, sloppy and staffed by people who didn't care if you shopped there or not. I have to tell you that I worked for ShopRite as a kid and my store (in Fort Lee) was head and shoulders better than the local A&P stores. In fact, we hired a guy away from A&P and he told us sad stories about how the chain was run.
End of history lesson - the new Denville A&P is really well run. The place is clean, well stocked, has decent pricing and a caring staff (I love working with Fred in the deli department - sharp guy).
The variety is good. They have a good produce department and the meat department is very good.
I shop at this store every week and have to drive past Key Foods here (a very sad little store).
Give them a shot - A&P has put together a winner.

Our inn keeper recommended this place when we asked for a good, reasonable (nothing on the Cape is cheap) sea food spot. It's busy (make that hopping) on the weekend and it's very casual but the food is exactly what sea food should be - fresh, unadorned with sauce or pretense and served fast.
Maybe not your best meal on the Cape and not a date spot but if you are hungry for sea food - go here and mingle with the locals.
They know things we don't.

Eventually, even a die hard sea food nut needs a break. When that happens to us on the Cape, we head here for a slice and a Coke (root beer for the wife). They make a decent pie, the place is clean and they have parking - very important in P'town.
Our inn keeper recommended these guys and despite the fact that I live in pizza heaven (New Jersey) I find these guys pretty good.
Had your fill of seafood? Eat pizza !
