Even the beautiful people have to eat. And when they do, I bet a lot of them eat here. The decor is similar to Balthazar - even the water glasses are identical. The Pastis staff has a more friendly attitude than the SoHo outpost but they are less efficient (there were a couple of minor service stumbles that the Maitre'd handled nicely).
I had their take on French Toast - 2 huge slabs of cake-like bread with a side of fruit. Served with real maple syrup it was quite good with lots of flavor. My companion had 2 eggs over easy with home fries and toast. The report on the eggs was that they were "slimy" - meaning cooked a little less than she liked (not as bad as it sounds). The potatoes were, however, wonderful. Done perfectly - quite tender and you could taste the onions, and other spices. Yummy.
We had coffee and hot chocolate. Their coffee was served in a small cup but it was very good. The hot chocolate was as good as it gets but, it too was delivered in a small cup.
While we sat there I saw some of the most beautiful people up at 10AM on a Sunday. A guy across from our table had the most perfectly waxed eyebrows and chatted away on his Razr cell phone. The crime was he was sitting next to one of the most beautiful women in the zip code. Go figure.
Pastis is a nice place for breakfast - brunch starts at 10(we arrived to a half full room at 9:30AM) and by 10:15, it was packed. We will try again for brunch in the warmer weather and try to score an outside table.
3 stars for now.

The location of this diner is perfect - dead center of Denville's main drag. But the perfection ends there. My wife and I went in and were assaulted by waves of cigarette smoke. Worse yet, our waitress was smoking - she reeked of stale tobacco. Very unappealing.
We struggled through the meal (don't remember what we ate) and have never gone back.
Be warned. The best places (like Alexis and the West Side Diner) have banned smoking. The rest, well they won't get my business.
Update - in all fairness, the state has banned smoking so you may want to go and see if the food is any good. Let me know and I'll give it a go.

Man does not live by expensive food alone. Sometimes you just want to eat and get on with life. Enter fast food restaurants - they are there for a reason, right? Even the late, great Julia Child ate at McDonald's (the quarter pounder was her happy meal).
I was introduced to Wendy's over 20 years ago at a restaurant way out on Rt. 22 near PA. It was so very different that I became a fan.
The Denville outpost is absolutely the best Wendy's I have visited. It is professionally run with a strong local manager (very important). It is clean and kept clean by a conscientious staff.
More important, the food is cooked properly and delivered hot.
What to eat? Try their chili with cheese and baked potato. Not too unhealthy and cheap. I wash it all down with a frosty - the bill is less that $5.
My wife likes the 99 cent classic and I have been known to get the Spicy Chicken Combo - I like their fries better than the "other guy's".
Finally, they have a fun classic car cruiser night in the warmer months. Great for kids of all ages (they have a good DJ and lots of parking).

My wife loves Panera Bread and dragged me there for lunch recently. I had a sandwich and it was perfectly ordinary and cost more than I feel it should.
This is typical chain-store fare and I know I would rather get a sandwich from Sergio's - fresh made from a recipe the owner cooked up (pun intended).
Average quality, not great value and uninspired taste.
Your move...

Want a prestige car but hate to take that first year, depreciation hit? Man are YOU smart. The folks at High Marques have been catering to smart people like you for decades. They know the used luxury market, they know their customers and they only sell cream puffs, hand picked by experts.
Typically, they have lots of Porsches but they occasionally have a Benz or Jag if it meets their high standards. I have seen a few Ferraris (sweet cars) in there too but my recommendation is that you shop here for German iron and you will not be disappointed.
These are good guys who have fun in a business that should be fun but often isn't.
Their motto could be "mid-life crisis cured here!" (Hey, a Porsche is cheaper than an affair, right?)

I have been a customer of Cy Drake for 30 years. They sell products from the very best manufacturers, they provide expert advice and they carefully install what they sell.
Every exterior lock we have had on our houses has come from Cy Drake. I have complete confidence in their work and trust their recommendations. They don't try to over sell you and, more important, they do not under sell you either.
Security is important to me and if it is to you, try these guys.

With an army of low price "big box" electronics stores out there, little local Sound City has to make it on expert advice and amazing service. I have spent a bit of money at Sound City because I wanted advice and service. But I haven't been there for a while because their service and advice do not (in my opinion) out weight the price penalty. Believe me, I have tried to support a local business. For instance, recently we bought a commonly available big screen Sony TV. Sound City could not come near the deal from Best Buy (price, payment terms, quick delivery). I did go there to buy some cables to hook the surround sound but they didn't have what I needed and price would have been nearly double the Best Buy price if they did have it in stock.
They stay in business so I guess people shop there but I have moved on.

My wife and I have driven from NJ to one exit outside Rhode Island for a great lobster roll lunch. Oh yeah, obviously, we love lobster. So finding a great lobster roll close to home would put a smile on my face. I tried Mary's Fish Camp and her $23 lobster roll wasn't bad but the price will keep me from being a regular customer. My friend said that the Lobster Place had a decent one for half what Mary's charges so I gave it a try. The verdict? An acceptable lobster roll given the price. As for taste, certainly too much celery. The meat was cooked properly but was a little tough (maybe the meat was from an older or larger lobster). The roll was not a classic bun and it wasn't buttered - just OK.
I probably won't go back unless I get desperate for lobster. But it's still an OK lobster roll and I can't see how they do it in NY for the price.

On one of the warmest March 11th's in history, we stopped in for a gelato. The selection was limited (must be selling like, well, gelato on a hot day) so I had stracciatella (if you think that's the correct spelling, I have ocean front property for you in Omaha). It was quite good with chunks of chocolate crunch in the vanilla cream. Served in a sugar cone for only $2, this was a very refreshing treat.
Not the best (that was in Florence) I have had but pretty good.

You pile into a big 4X4 with perfect strangers (well, they may not be perfect, but no one is stranger). You all share an interest in seeing nature's beauty up close. The driver / tour guide (usually a retiree) gives you a running documentary about the ecology, history and even a little Cape gossip..
These tours last about an hour with a couple of brief stops to walk the dunes and take pictures. It's a bit of a wild adventure for not a lot of money.
We have gone several times and each tour has been fun.
Love the outdoors? Try this next time you are on the Cape.
