You have to eat and drink, right? And you don't eat boring food do you? So why eat and drink from boring plates, cups and glasses? Enter Fishes Eddy. Originally, I shopped here for old diner cups and plates - especially loved the ones with the long-forgotten names of closed eateries. Now I go back to see what kind of cool stuff they have that I can add to my "collection".
For instance, I just bought a metal airline knife and a metal coffee pot - the prices were stupidly cheap. Back when the Palace Hotel closed, I bought a Leona H. Palace tea pot (complete with gold leaf details) - again stupidly cheap.
All of our daily glasses are from Fishes Eddy too along with a lot of our heavy duty mugs.
This is a fun, NY institution. Go, have fun, and eat from something cool and fun.

I wanted a spring jacket - just right for a cool day. The place is a coat factory so I figured it would have a great selection. How wrong I was. They had very few choices in the style I wanted and none were that appealing. I looked at the shoe section and didn't find a pair I liked in my size.
After about 20 minutes, I got fed up with the messy, chaotic layout of the store. I may like a bargain but I didn't think their prices were worth the pain to shop here.
Lots of people were shopping so I may have a minority opinion.

For years, New York Magazine would list interesting stuff in their pages that came from this store. I never was a Superman comic book fan but knew that this was a name right out of DC comics. After eating brunch one Sunday, I walked past the store and saw enough goodies in the window to make a return trip when they were open.
I bought a George W. Bush dog toy and a leather business card case (I keep my Judysbook cards in there). My dog tried to bite the president's head off (good dogie!) so now it's sitting next to my PC.
Interesting place to buy one-of-a-kind gifts or cool junk that you really don't need but want.

I lived around the corner from B&V so these were the logical guys for me. I was a customer for years but kept wondering why my shirt buttons kept cracking. I showed them to my salesman at Brooks Brothers and he said "change dry cleaners". He said that Brooks Bros. used really tough buttons and the fact that these guys can break them means that it's time for a change. Change I did and I have not lost a button since.
People use them so they may be OK for you but I do not any more. They were too careless (in my opinion) and I no longer trust my shirts to them.
Try Franklin Plaza Cleaners in Rockaway.

There is a thing called a last - it's a form that the shoe makers use to construct their shoes. New Balance seems to use a last that fits the shape of my feet. My wife finds that Saucony matches her feet and we both think that Reebock fits no one!
With that as preamble, I like New Balance shoes. This store has a great selection and when they have sales, the prices are great. If you have wide feet, then you already know about New Balance (the only guys around who have shoes in wide sizes).
Finally, some of their products are actually made in the USA. Definitely a draw for me.

We have been a customer of Painten' Place for 30 years. The people behind the counter know paint and can help you with any project. That's something you don't get at the big stores. Their prices are in line with the big stores so it's hard to justify going anywhere else.
The parking lot is a little tight but that's it - everything else is first rate.

With Lowes and Home Depot, you would think the local hardware stores would all be closed by now. However, when a store is as big and has as much good stuff as Denville Hardware, your chances of remaining in business are very high. I have seldom been disappointed when looking for a part, tool or fastener. The organized jumble that is their store tells you that they have it and you just need to ask someone to find it.
I Love this place.

These days, I am not much of a hiker or camper but I still love this store. They have it all for the outdoors person. Camping, boating (canoe and kayak), biking, hiking; you name it, they have it and have people to help you too.
I go for the shoes (bad feet) - always good prices and a selection that covers any outdoor or casual need.
I also love their knife department (Dave is great). A good selection at very good prices.
Also, they sell Timex watches at discount prices. I hardly ever see that. Once I bought a new watch there for $17 that Timex.com had for $85... I bought three and gave 2 as gifts.
Great store with a staff that loves the outdoors.

Reach into your past and be a kid again. The guys here have everything you remember that was fun as a little boy of girl. This is a great place to bring a kid and then watch his or her eyes light up. They have a kid friendly policy about playing with the trains. They have a lot of setups and the sound, smoke and on-track action will make you smile. It makes me smile just thinking about it.
Their selection and prices are excellent.
Go. Bring a child - even if it's yourself.
