I started playing guitars in the 1960's (remember folk music?) and even played in a coffee house during college (where Java was hot and liquid,. My guitar was purchased at a pawn shop and I couldn't tell you the name of the manufacturer if you held a capo to my head. I used to think a guitar was a guitar. Then I played a Martin. Wow! This was a revelation. The action was wonderful, the tone rich.
They were expensive even back then (Nixon was president) and remain so now. But for serious players, they remain a great value. Essentially a life-time purchase if you take reasonable care of it (a good case is essential.)
On my birthday a few years back, we went for a tour and I left impressed with the craftsmanship of the American worker. (God bless 'em.)
It's a fun and interesting way to spend a couple of hours and it's not just for guitar players.
Here is an American company that can compete toe to toe with the best instruments in the world.

I used to work in Mount Olive and passed this place nearly every week and never went in. When I changed jobs, I heard through the pizza grapevine that Joseph's had great pizza. We tried it several times and discovered that the grapevine was right.
Looking for a new place to have a slice or a whole pie? Try Joseph's - they do pizza right.

We saw their TV advertisement and gave them a shot on a cold February night. The room was warm and inviting. We were seated promptly. The waiter did a perfect job of describing the specials. And the icing on the cake was the wonderful taste of the food. From appetizer to dessert, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
The owner even came by and to say hello - I think the fact that the owner is on the premises is a very good sign.
So far, 4 stars but we will visit again soon - if everything is a good as February, this is a 5 star place.

For years, my friends have taken us to this restaurant for dinner on the lake - they have a very nice location and in warm weather you can eat outside. But the food is abysmal, the service distracted and the prices way out of line with the quality.
Our friends have a boat so they like to sail in and eat on the water. That may be cool, but it doesn't make up for the food.
My experience is based several visits and over the years, things have not improved. In fact, they have gone down hill - something I didn't think was possible.
Consider yourself warned.

Here is another brunch place with a large following and I can't figure out why. The price is OK. The amount of food is amazing. However, the taste, care in preparation and overall quality leaves me asking why people go here. We go to be sociable with good friends - the place is in a convenient spot and the price is really low. But I have gone a couple of times and did not leave with a positive impression.
Probably will never go back. I may be off base - people crowd in here on Sunday. Your move.

You see people "together" and you ask yourself, "what did she see in him?" Sure, this is just a superficial assessment, but admit it, we all do it. (Like, Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett - explain that one if you can.) Well that's how I feel about the Madison Hotel's brunch. We go with friends on Sunday and the place is packed. But the food is just OK and pretty expensive for the quality. The quantity is all you can eat but at my age and weight, quality means a lot more to me than how big a pile of food I can stuff down my gullet.
The room is fancy. They have parking. But don't expect great food at brunch.

I shop stores like this (instead of big box stores) because the staff members tend to be more experienced and they really worry about their reputation and your repeat business.
I have shopped here for several years through several cars and feel comfortable going back.
I can't say that about many others.

I have been a customer of this book shop since the late 1970's. The owners are real book people and keep the shelves stocked and fresh. They don't specialize; instead, they are generalists with eclectic tastes.
I love their pricing on paperbacks and their travel section and cookbook section are a draw for me. They also buy books but if you have a rare edition, eBay may be a better place to sell it. They buy postcards too.
It's a little difficult to find but of you love books and a bargain, shop here.

Small bookstores are disappearing under the weight of the big guys like Amazon. We are doing a disservice to ourselves by shopping purely on price (think Wal-Mart) and we will all be sad when passionate booksellers all close their doors for good.
This shop has knowledgeable people and they can recommend books that are good and outside the best seller list. I like their travel selection and their children's book section is good too.
Stop thinking with your wallet. You can afford to shop here, just to ensure that stores like this remain alive and people who love books can continue to recommend them to us.

So many people shop at Amazon and Barnes and Noble that it is a wonder that any small and independent shops still exist. I am happy to report that NYC still has a few and this is (in my opinion) one of the best. The people who work here are readers, God bless them, and they have opinions. If you go in and ask them for a recommendation, they will be happy to start you on the road to a new genre or a new author on a favorite genre.
I shop here just to put money in their coffers because I want them around to help me learn more about exciting literature and new voices.
Go. Spend. Enjoy.
