I was in my 30's the first time I had lobster but I have been making up for lost time at the Eastham Lobster Pool. In 1987, we made our first trip to Cape Cod. We discovered this restaurant - walking distance from our hotel - and now, we visit several times during our annual Cape vacations. The reason for such loyalty is their amazing, wonderful, perfect, positively deadly Lobster Stew.
For the uninitiated, Lobster Stew is chunks of lobster swimming in a creamy, butter-filled pool of sherry laced goodness.
I get a bowl or cup on every visit. Note - every third bowl, they give you a coupon for a free angioplasty.
You have to visit this place - get the stew and then send me a thank you.

The location - at the center of Provincetown, across from the Whale Watch places - screams tourist trap. However, this place serves fresh, perfectly prepared seafood at reasonable prices. We have been following up our whale watches over the past few years with lunch or supper at the Lobster Pot. Our innkeeper gave these guys two thumbs up a couple of years ago and she was right.
Their claim to fame is a soup / stew called Portuguese soup. Always among the top contenders in the best in town contest, their soup is a must-have appetizer. I get their shrimp with orzo - spiced to perfection and my wife one of their daily fish specials.
A truly memorable dining experience.

If you have been paying attention, Little Italy is shrinking. Not like Venice, which is sinking, but the crush of Chinese businesses has been nibbling at the borders for years. Standing tall all this time, Ferrara has managed to survive, even thrive, amid an ocean of dumplings and soy sauce.
These folks serve wonderful, authentic Italian baked specialties (also expensive which explains the 4, not 5 stars). My mom took us here for gelato and sfogliatella (a clam shell shaped, sweet ricotta filled Neapolitan treat). as kids and I don't think much has changed over the decades except the price.
My wife's Irish relatives came for a visit a few years back and I took them on an NYC tour that ended near midnight with gelato at Ferrara's. Years later, they still remarked that it was the greatest treat and most memorable part of their visit.
A piece of NYC history. Long may it thrive.

I love pens. I think that's because I have terrible penmanship and think that a nicer pen will make me write better. Hasn't worked yet but I keep trying.
I discovered Fahrney's through their catalog . And now , while I use their web site to buy, I love their catalog - it is so well done.
Their selection is top notch and their prices are pretty good (I think the Fountain Pen Hospital has lower prices) but it's the catalog that does it for me. It's a book of a hundred dreams. Kind of like window shopping without the window (or Windows).
When they have closeouts, their prices can't be beat.
Get on their mailing list and you will thank me the first time you get the catalog.
Write on!

My mom, gone now 10 years, loved this store. Born in Naples before World War I, my mother was an expert on Italian food. She seldom spoke Italian at home, but even in her later years, she would start chatting, ordering, joking in her native tongue the second she entered the place. One time, the counter man asked her where she lived. Her house was in Bergen County with a view of NYC. But she told them she lived in the "woods." A NYC girl at heart, New Jersey was clearly not her beloved City.
We would make the trip on Sunday mornings because this place has it all. The best meat, bread, cheese, olives (to die for), salads, canned specialties and cooked foods. On the way home, more than once, we would start eating hunks of bread or the green olives.
The store is a throwback to a time when these stores were everywhere.
You should go and eat something you have never eaten before. You'll thank me and you'll make my mother happy. She loved to feed guests.

My friend Stewart dragged me to Yonah Schimmel's on one of our explorations of the City. Our goal is to amaze the other guy with his city knowledge. Well, Stew amazed me with my meal at this nearly 100 year old establishment.
I had a thing called a knish made from potatoes. A potato knish is a mashed potato snowball cooked or more accurately baked with spices. They have other flavors but go for the potato - you'll love it.
Like most "soul" food, a knish is a simple, filling and slightly fattening dish. I prefer mine with brown mustard but you could follow your own heart and still come away with a taste treat.
Add a cream soda and you have just become a real New Yorker.
This place is a treasure. Go, you'll thank me.

I had a pair of Johnson & Murphy shoes that I paid too much money for. They needed soles and heels and maybe a little TLC. For about $40 (the price of a cheap pair of sneakers) these folks brought my shoes back to life. Since then, whenever my shoes look a little tired, I bring them back to life here. This is one of those old time shops with old world craftsmen.
If you own quality shoes, bring them here with confidence.

I know they are called French Fries, but my European friends all tell me that the Belgians make the best fries. I was skeptical until I discovered this place. Then I was convinced.
These guys twice cook their potatoes the old world way and offer them with nearly a million dips - naturally including catchup and mayo (as the Belgians suggest).
The store is a long narrow crack in the wall but you have to get past that - the fries are that good.
I you stumble upon it as you explore the lower east side or make a trek - either way, buy a sack and enjoy the best fries you have ever tasted.
This is a real NYC find and you need to go to experience why Manhattan is food heaven.

Yes, PFChangs is a chain. Get over it. This is not TGI Fridays. It is a classy, well run chain with fun takes on traditional Chinese dishes.
Take the salt & pepper calamari. It's fresh tasting. Has good texture. Comes to the table hot and full of flavor. I order it every time I visit. Another favorite is their lettuce wraps. Finger food at its best.
My family is hooked on their "Orange Peel" line - shrimp. chicken, beef. A slightly sweet coating on your favorite main ingredient. Mmmmmm!
The servers tend to be energetic and engaged - they must have a good training program. The decor hearkens back to old time places like Trader Vic's - but with better food.
I have been to 3 different Changs across the USA and I suggest you call ahead, they all seem to be crowded.

I grew up within 2 miles of the original Callahan's in Fort Lee, NJ. I was a poor kid, so the visits were a rare treat. As I got older, got a part time job and a car, my visits and waistline grew. I know now they are deadly, but they are great (their motto is, "so big, so good".) Truth in advertising.
Here is the menu, no need for a pen: Deep fat fried hot dogs. Deep fat fried potatoes. Coke. Done!
When you order, get a toasted roll. Like Starbucks, you should order in the proper manner: "Single, TR. Fries" - that's a hot dog on a toasted roll with French Fries.
I only give 4 stars because this isn't the original - a joint I believe is closed for good (sigh!)
For an old-time treat - this place can't be beat.
