Classic NYC Pizza - The Thin Crispy Crust Kind
Saturday, December 10, 2005
What is it with NY pizza anyway? Everyone thinks he or she knows which purveyor produces the best pies. Ray's on 6th in the Village. Lombardi's on Spring. Ben's on Spring. Grimaldi under the Brooklyn Bridge. These are all among the best around. But no matter whose list you choose, John's on Bleeker always seems to find a place of honor. Forget ambiance, their branch by Lincoln Center has more of that. It's all about the pizza at John's on Bleeker. Crisp, thin crust with good sauce and great cheese. Hand thrown and brick oven baked to perfection. Each one is a hand-made creation. No industrial strength, Pizza Hut, each one is a bad as the next, offerings here.
My idea of a perfect summer afternoon is to walk Bleeker from stem to stern, checking out the amazing shops, noshing samples at Murry's cheese and chowing down on a pie at John's.
Is John's the best in New York? Is there really a best? The fun in life is trying to find answers to these profound questions.
