To some, PD O'Hurley's has some soul-searching to do. It cannot seem to decide whether it is an upscale restaurant or a regular pub. The result is a bar that has to maintain a barely-used restaurant, and is unintentionally overpriced to cover costs.
To others, the restaurant makes it one of the classier Irish pubs in the city. It has good bar food, a nice wine list, a well-behaved clientele, and a pleasant wait staff. If you take a date, you can probably get a quiet table in the restaurant area, even if you are not planning to order food.
Added bonus: If you walk in and do not like it, there are half a dozen Irish pubs within a one block radius.

TJ's is crowded every night of the week. One third of its patrons are heavy regulars. They are 50+, friendly with the owner and staff, and generally good for a conversation. Another third is young college-age yuppies that tend to make-out with each other and keep to themselves. The last third is a motley crew of passer-bys and first-timers. Once you're in, however, the eclectic nature of the crowd seems to melt away as everyone squeezes towards the tiny counter to order another round.
There is something special happening almost every night, so call ahead to see if there is karaoke, 1/2 price drinks, or a disk jockey.

Blue Fin is disappointing. Its staff is curt, its food is average, and its prices are entirely unwarranted. Only the whole lobsters are excellent, but so are most lobsters, and at Blue Fin you have to deal with prima donna waitresses and mediocre starters. If you must go, splurge on the Blue Fin martini. It’s a charming (if potent) blue drink with a Swedish Fish at the bottom.

With legions of adoring regulars, Time Out does not need the typical overzealous bouncer, blaring hip-hop, or strange martinis to draw a comfortable crowd. Rather, it maintains its status as a grade-A hangout by welcoming anyone who walks in the door with a fantastic blend of (heavily 80s) music and consistently good beer and well drinks.
As if that is not enough, Time Out has three beer pong tables that often become the center of attention. Challengers write their names on a chalkboard, lining up to beat one of the many champions who call Time Out home. Before you know it, you will be accepting a victory drink from the bartender with whom you beat some lesser team.
The other center of attention is the television screens, which reliably host the best sports of the evening. Sports memorabilia deck the walls.
Food, if slow to your table, is quite good. Try the wings.

Despite its ritzy neighborhood, La Carezza is moderately priced and not at all snobby. They offer about 12 different facials. The teen facial is perfect for young adults beginning to face the realities of acne, while the basic facial is a great deal for those who do not need anything fancy. The 10 or so other options include special add-ins that make you feel like a million bucks. Ask for Angelina.

Stephanie Klein thinks she is Carrie Bradshaw. She loves to talk about being single, men, and clothing. She tries to name-drop trendy restaurants and parties. She cannot stop asking pretentious questions about the nature of her life. Except, Carrie is classy. Stephanie confuses vulgarity with cutting-edge. She discusses poop and describes much of her life with four-letter words. Despite her recent publicity (a book deal and an article in the New York Times), the split between philosophy and crudeness makes her seem shallow, unrefined, and untalented.

Jill is hysterical, and she does it without being vulgar (a la Stephanie Klein - see other post). We hear about her job and daily life, but (thankfully) little about her sexual and romantic adventures. She has a terrific ability to make everyday occurrences (her first facial or being grouchy) into a story that will make you laugh aloud.

Favorites:
Barter - artists, photographers, and the unemployed all post what they can offer in exchange for what they hope you can offer.
Etiquette forum - there is nothing else like it. It is a couple of stuffy older-people discussing how to behave properly.
Wedding forum – a nice group of women chatting/freaking out about their upcoming big days.

Amanda, amazingly innovative, manages to remain accessible when she describes obscure musicians, complicated art movements, and existentialist crises. Her blog is the story of a young artist who is trying to connect the theoretical art world with the materialistic society that surrounds her. Living vicariously through Amanda is unique, enlightening, and compelling.

My father found Dr. Lee when he was looking at a list of dentist who take our insurance. He liked her name. Five years later, the whole family sees her, and we look forward to our appointments. She's charismatic, interesting, and a great dentist. People are not afraid to tell Dr. Lee that they do not floss, and for the same reason, she can ease anxiety for even the most painful procedures. She's the best.
