Whenever I go there, I get a loaf of chocolate cherry bread. Whole Foods used to carry it, but apparently not any more.

Their burgers are very good. They have an adult taste with condiments that are not over-sweet like too many burger joints that use and abuse ketchup. Try the belly-buster, it's earned its name.

The burgers are nothing to write home about, although the teriyaki burger is acceptable. Bistro Burger is cheaper and better.

No, the real draw at Barney's is the basket of curly fries with ranch dressing. They are simply amazing.

It looks more like a boulangerie than a pâtisserie, but don't let appearances deceive you. The Delanghes' almond pastries are simply excellent.

Their cakes are expensive, but excellent, and usually feature very inventive combinations of flavors, sometimes a little too daring. They also serve lunch, dinner and brunch.

Rue Saint Jacques is a new French restaurant that opened a mere six months ago. I once lived at 123 rue Saint Jacques in Paris, when staying in a dorm at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, so I got a kick from the name. It is apparently named after a tony restaurant in London where the chef once worked. Also a pun on Jackson street where the restaurant is located (on the Powell-Hyde cable car line).
The first time I went there, the starter course, a salmon tartare on a bed of Belgian endives was somewhat lackluster, but the next course, a filet of beef in a foie gras sauce, was absolutely heavenly, as was the nougat glacé, a sort of ice cream studded with candied fruit and nuts to resemble Montélimar nougat. I have been there again several times, and was not disappointed, for instance with scallops that melted in my mouth on a bed of green lentils with a bell pepper coulis.
One of my two favorite places in the city.

This another gem of a classic French bistro in San Francisco. Good food at relatively reasonable prices, and very friendly service.

This French bistro is OK, but for the price, I would rather go to Plouf next door, or to Le Central a block away, and for something a little fancier, Rue Lepic.

This small restaurant offers a very reasonably priced prix fixe menu around lunchtime. Portions are a little on the side, however.
