On cool, crisp winter days nothing seems more inviting than the Crissy Field Warming Hut Bookstore/Cafe. Especially after a stroll or run along Crissy Field. They sell typical national park/museum store merchandise, with an emphasis on environmentally minded products. It might be a good place to shop for gifts for outdoorsy friends. The cafe has nice dishes inspired by Alice Waters, as well as the usual coffee shop offerings.

It's THE non-funky, well-run independent bookstore in San Francisco. They sometimes get major authors/celebs like Roger Ebert. The bargain section doesn't seem to have any good books. The store is very neat and organized. Occasionally they have a great 20% off everything sale. With a free Stacey's Literary License, you always get 10% off everyday.

A great place for boarders, cyclists, runners, triathletes, hikers, swimmers, backpackers, etc. They give out coupons frequently at running events. They have lectures and speakers, too.

A tiny store in the Embarcadero Center Shopping center. There's the Parks Collector's Series travel books and maps. They have national park sweatshirts, posters, and other environmentally minded gifts. Because it's so small, there's only a limited amount of merchandise that can fit into the store. It might be a better place (you're more likely to find what you want) if it were a larger store and had more merchandise.

The last time I went there, it was only $6 for matinee features. They used to have double features for $5. I'm not sure if they have that anymore, from what I see on their website. They had independent films such as The House of Sand and Fog and Shattered Glass, and quality family films like Elf. The theatre is owned and managed by true film buffs with film backgrounds, and you can tell simply by looking at the care they put in the way the theatre looks - retro and historic. You can get in for free on your birthday.
