You can smell the yakitori on the grills even before you walk into the place. And you'll be plenty hungry by the time you get a table. There is often a wait ... the place is small but the turnover is pretty fast. This is a hangout for the college crowd...lots of tattoos and body piercings but the prices are matched to college budgets. At a dollar or so per skewer, your tummy will be full and your wallet will hardly notice it.

This place has pretty good food. The food is a bit different than your mainstream Japanese food you'd find in the States. I've heard it's what you'd find in Japan -- basically, people come here to drink and the food is what is typcially served with drinks in Japan. The food is a bit expensive but good. If you'd like to experience a bit of Japan in NYC, this is probably a good place as this place is full of expats. The one downside is that if you don't speak Japanese or come in with a white person, they may turn you away claiming that there are no tables but if you act like you don't understand what they are saying (since their English is so poor) they may end up letting you in.

This is a "secret" place as many of the sake restaurants seem to be -- it is hidden in the basement of an office building. You've got to walk into an office building past the security guard, walk down the stairs (not a grand set but the kind you'd use in the event of a fire) and voila (or whatever equivalent word is in Japanese), you are met with a tranquil setting where you can sample hundreds of sake. There is a tasty menu as well but since this is a sake place, the dishes are small appetizer/tapas style that you order to share with the table. They have flights of sake if you're into experimentation. On weekend nights, it's hard to get in without a reseravation.

Menchanko Tei has ramen as well as udon and other noodles. During lunch, they only serve noodles, onigiri (rice balls wrapped in seaweed/nori) and oden. At dinner they also serve small tapas type dishes as well -- the type of thing you would eat while drinking. All of it is really tasty and reasonably priced. They also have a bottle keep for sake, if you are into drinking regularly. The bottles of sake are reasonably priced too. The staff is also very friendly. You often see Japanese expats here -- sometimes eating alone at the counter area.
This restaurant also has another location on 55th street and they have a sister restaurant that specializes in katsu.

Plenty of good cheap eats abound in chinatown but NY Noodletown is a cut above the rest. It's a smallish restaurant with absolutely no decor but the line goes out the door. Many locals do take out here, as you will see while you wait for your table. The waiters are curt but the food is fab and quick and cheap (definitely under $10 per person). It's not just noodles here, although the noodle soups are delic. It used to be hard to communicate with the waiters when the clientele was almost entirely chinese but the word seems to be out on this place so the waiters are now able to deal with non-chinese speakers.

New American Youth Ballet offers classes for kids as young as 2. They try to make the class fun for kids and they have props like puppets and rubber ducks. They "paint" rainbows and pretend to have sticky bubble gum on their shoes. The classes are small for the younger classes so there is a lot of individual attention. They suggest donations as payment for classes and those who cannot afford it can make separate arrangements. Their philosophy is that activities like these should be accessible to everyone. The two drawbacks are that their remote location makes it a little bit difficult to get to and the studio is quite small.

There is a nice variety of upscale clothing for kids. The owner has done a good job of editting the store's offerings so that you can find whatever you need for your kids all in one neighborhood store (albeit a limited selection) -- including flap happy hats, MP tights, Robeez shoes, various european designers as well as the store's own brand. The prices are moderately expensive but not the kind of prices you pay at a lot of the NYC boutiques. The one down side is that the store is extremely small and there is no room to maneuver your stroller.

The hair cuts for your kids are pretty basic but the good thing is that they have many distractions for your squirmy toddlers. They have seats in the shape of cars, videos, bubbles, toys, you name it. And the cut only takes 10 minutes or so (even that seems an eternity when your child is crying her eyes out because she really hates having anyone touch her hair). The toy store portion of the store has a good selection of interesting things for toddlers at decent prices. The guy behind the register is pretty friendly and solicitous.

When the weather is frightful and your kids are going stir crazy, Sydney's is a good place to take them to let off some steam. It is a large space with lots of toys and places to climb. They also have performers or activities scheduled throughout the week. However, it does get crowded. It is also fairly expensive.

This is a fairly upscale music program for infants and toddlers. The unique thing about this program is that the children are able to participate by playing various child sized instruments. The kids are just banging on the instruments but they love having different instruments to play with throughout the class. The time they have with each instrument is short but at this age, the children don't have much of an attention span anyway. The instruments are kept clean and the studio is decorated in primary colors which the kids like. They also offer an arts program for toddlers.
