I think Hot Skates used to be better. For some reason they carry just the worst brands. The clothing is either really expensive (like Active, but without the selection), or just ugly. So much Stussy. And they don't have a lot of variety for skate hard goods.
Snowboard stuff, i have no idea.
But the people seem really friendly and nice, especially for a skate shop.

Au Lac has been a longtime favorite of ours. Good for veggies and non-veggies alike. The first time we went there we had a clay pot dish and it was pretty mediocre. What they really shine at are the fake meats, so I recommend those.
We like the vermicelli dishes, the spring rolls, the beef with watercress and chicken with vegetables. The servers are really nice. And I believe one of the chefs has taken a vow of silence, so he's this incredible smiley man who i think creates a lot of the raw dishes. I have tried the raw desserts, which are awesome. But the raw dishes are pretty expensive. I think it would be a fun treat for something special. Otherwise I stick to the cooked stuff that is cheaper.
They are closed on Mondays except for certain Buddhist holidays.
And if you are vegetarian and miss wonton soup...this is the place. Even if you are not vegetarian, this is my favorite wonton soup of all time.

if you want to go for the bar scene, go later in the evening or when there are big sporting events. if you want to just eat and enjoy yourself, avoid these times. it becomes a weird combination of overdressed orange county bar scenesters and families trying to eat their calamari.

I find this place sort of obnoxious because it's always filled with people who sit for hours. If you're a lucky person who gets a seat, then this is a great spot. good for you.
They do have ice cream drinks too, which is a refreshing change from frappucino, ice blended, blah blah types of drinks.

I always get the blackened calamari burrito, which i think is tasty. Whole wheat tortilla and all. I recommend not getting the burritos wet, instead get the avocado salsa at the salsa bar and dump it over the burrito yourself.
Good fresca too with free refills.
There is no AC in this place, so it gets super steamy on hot days.

they have an interesting mediterranean mix, italian and middle eastern. i have had incredible swordfish and tried a steak. the steak was rare, and really really rare. they don't mess around. it was actually cold inside. but still really delicious.
i don't think you can go wrong here. but you might have to save up for the visit.

I think Sushi of Naples is mediocre in terms of sushi. I've been to the Pasadena location as well, where I think the sushi is a little bit better. I've tried the cooked fish here as well, and that is really good.
I would never go out of my way to come here, but it's fairly convenient and if you go early there is not a long wait.
To be fair, I've never eaten at the sushi bar, and that can really change the experience. THe sushi bar in Pasadena is better than sitting at a table, so maybe that is true in Long Beach too.
It's worth trying, if you're in this area.

The only bad thing about Open Sesame is that other people know it is so good, so it gets really crowded. If you are going on a Friday or Saturday night...even a weeknight, just expect a 30 minute - 1 hour wait. If you have a large group, call ahead and see if you can make reservations. The more people you have, the longer you'll wait. We have found that sitting at the bar is really convenient because not everyone will sit there and the service is faster.
I generally get the Chicken Tawook skewer because it's like crack and I can't not get it. It comes marinated (organic free range chicken according to their original menus) with this awesome garlic sauce. You get tabouli or regular salad, both are good. And hummus. I always exchange for baba ghanoush, because I love it. I love both though.
The vegetarian plate is incredible as well. Their dolmas are handmade and perfect.
The beef can sometimes be overcooked for my taste, but I like beer rare. You can ask for it cooked to order. The kafta is delicious as well.
I have not had the shwarma there because sometimes it takes a long time to be ready, and I have no patience after waiting so long to be seated.
The pita is awesome and they will refill it on request.
I also recommend the Moroccan iced tea, it comes with mint in it.
The seating is so strange. They recently expanded and you can tell they are trying to squeeze as many people in as possible. So sometimes there are awkward arrangements of sitting really close to someone else. But it's also fun like that. We never eat outside anymore because 2nd st. is loud and people tend to smoke a lot right where you eat.
I need to go there right now.

You seat yourself here and the menus are newsprint and probably ten pages long. I have certain dishes here that I love and others that are just pathetic and I can't believe they charge you for them (primarily the cheese bread). Once you figure out what you like, it's a great place. I generally take out of town visitors here because there is a lot of variety and character.
I like:
Vegetarian black bean chili
Garlic Chicken Salad
Veggie Thai Salad
Thai Wrap
Chicken Spinach crepes
Walnut that kissed the chicken sandwich
I don't like:
Cheese bread
Peasant mushrooms
Mexican casserole
A lot of people also like the seafood enchiladas, but they are super cheesy for me.
The salads are generally huge, so be prepared. I think their soup selection is sort of lame. The sanwiches are generally good, but maybe a little overpriced for me.
Service varies. In Orange it is ok. I've waited forever at the Fullerton location for coffee refills. For the most part the servers are great and friendly, but there are just random ones who are busy dealing with friends or can't handle the crowds.
Be warned: THe brownie sundae is HUGE. enough for 3 people.
The coconut almond bars are rad.
Great microbrews beers.

Felix's always seems crowded and a little hectic. You can generally seat yourself, but let someone know you are there if you are sitting outside. If you are sitting outside, make sure you are ready for the sad, gothic kids outside of Diedrich's to blow smoke all over you while you eat. yum.
There is a huge assortment of food here, so I can only speak to the few things I have had. I think that they give you soup or salad with your meal, I seem to remember having soup. I've had some of the seafood dishes which were nothing special. I've had a chicken dish which was good. They have this spinach mixture as a side which is tasty, but not healthy in any way. It's like spinach drenched in alfredo sauce. The sweet plantains seem authentic, but I don't like them as a rule.
Black beans and rice are always good and for the low-budget students, it's a very good and cheap option to get to go. They give you a ton.
They also give you (for dinner at least) tres leches cake for dessert. I really like their cake and i'm not a huge tres leches fan.
It's all pretty cheap for what you get.
Some people love this place and consider it an institution for Cuban food. I don't think it's that fantastic, but it's pretty good every now and then. Maybe I just need to find my dish there.
