Foodland is a supermarket chain found only in Hawaii. I found that it was slightly better than the other Hawaiian market chain, Star Markets. Foodland has a friendlier atmosphere and its prices are significantly lower. Some of the Foodlands may have their own bakery section, all of them have a sushi section, and most of them have a deli. Disregarding the national supermarket chains like Safeway that are found on Hawaii, I'd say that Foodland is your best bet for groceries while on vacation.

Star Markets are a small chain of generic supermarkets only found on the Hawaiian islands. The supply of goods at Star Market was adequate, but the prices were absolutely crazy. Besides the fact that a box of cereal could cost more than six dollars, I also found that they did not have their own bakery section, but only offered packaged bakery foods. I still found the stuff that I needed, just not very efficiently. Well, what can you expect from a generic supermarket?

No matter what sport you play, no matter how rare, you can find equipment at Sportmart. Everything is very easy to find at this store, and they also sell clothes, shoes, and workout machines. Don't go anywhere else for sporting goods!

Alexander's Fish and Chips serves the best fish and chips I've ever tasted in my life. This locally owned and operated restaurant also offers calamari, shrimp, and chicken and chips. They use premium quality, local-caught fish for the fish and chips. You can choose what kind of fish you want, like ono, ahi, mahi mahi, or aku. All the seafood served tastes very fresh, and the soups and salads are surprisingly good. I found that the food quality at Alexander's well exceeds how much you pay.

Vito's Pizza is a hidden pizzeria located close to Costco, off Lawrence expressway. Though this place is often crowded with soccer season celebrations, I still found it great. Their pizza, though pricey, is one of the best that I've ever tasted. A small or medium pizza will be plenty, because their servings are quite big. Be sure to try their original pepperoni, and don't even think about going to Round Table.

Ma'alaea Grill is truly the best restaurant I've ever been to in Hawaii. This ocean side Hawaiian restaurant offers seafood, steak, chicken, and duck on their small but sophisticated menu. The restaurant has a dim but casual atmosphere with live music on weekends. The food is absolutely stunning. I visited this place three times during the same vacation, and tried their chicken plate, seafood pasta, crab cakes, steak, and their specialty duck. Definitely do not miss out on their custom made duck, which you can choose how you want prepared. Try their awesome desserts too!

Red Lobster is a small chain of American style seafood restaurant which I found quite good. The prices are little bit high, but I found that their lobster, crab, shrimp, and fish quality was well worth it. In spite of the name, Red Lobster also offers pasta, salads, and some chicken and beef plates. What I found especially good about this restaurant were the pre-dinner bread rolls. I think this is their signature specialty. They give you warm, soft, cheese filled bread rolls which I found exquisite.

Sweet Tomatoes is one of those good salad bars that you rarely come across when dining. Their vegetables and soups are actually quite fresh and tasty, and the prices are reasonable. Discount coupons can be found in the local newspaper: San Jose Mercury News. Sweet Tomatoes offers buffet style counters of foods, including a huge salad bar, bakery section, soup/pasta bar, and dessert counter. I absolutely loved this place, and recommend it to everyone.

Fuji Sushi is a rare, inexpensive sushi buffet located downtown in Davis. Fuji has buffet lunch, but for dinner, you have to pay for each individual plate of sushi you eat, so it's better if you come for lunch. The last time I went, the lunch buffet was around 13 dollars, and slightly more expensive on weekends. This place is totally packed with college students, so come early because lunch stops around one or two pm. The sushi buffet features all kinds of sashimi, tempura, eel, California rolls, beans, barbecue chicken, raw oysters, and a lot more stuff. You can also order custom made stuff for no extra charge. Come hungry!

Big 5 Sporting Goods is a medium size sports store that I found has a barely adequate selection of supplies. They offer mostly the items you expect from a sports store, like basketball, soccer, hockey, skateboard, ski, snowboard, tennis, volleyball, and weight lifting equipment. Big 5 also sells clothes and shoes and has an impressive section dedicated to firearms. Prices were about average. I think that Big 5 would have some trouble putting up competition with the huge Sport Mart across the street.
