I think one of the most important things about choosing a nursing home for a loved one is to make impromptu visits during the day and nightime.
Don't call ahead, don't ask for a tour. Just show up. Show up around 7am when it's hectic and breakfast time, or around 5 when it's hectic and dinner time. SEE how the facility works when they're not expecting you.
Once you make the decision to put your loved one in a home, continue to check up during non-visiting hours. YOu have the right. Ask to see their list of complaints that have been filed against them by residents and their family members.
I will only say that I would advise anyone who was interested in putting their family member in Emerald Care to really do your research on this facility. Talk to the residents and the staff. Go with your gut feeling. If it doesn't feel, look, and smell right, it probably isn't.

My husband got his CNA training through BEST and while their prices aren't too bad (considering his training was paid for by the state so therefore free to us !!), their instruction left alot to be desired. Sometimes he'd tell me things that he was taught there and my hair would stand up on end!
Bonnie, one of the instructors, always had her husband coming in and out of the classroom which was really disturbing.
Also, don't expect the cream of the crop to take these classes with you. I took my CNA classes and I think I was the only person there who graduated high school AND could read. It was troubling to think that the people I shared classroom space with would soon be dealing with the elderly and infirm. Because your classmates aren't the brightest in the world, you can expect to be given an hour to read a 3-paragraph reading assignment. Bring a book, or something, to fill your spare time.

I'm a nursing student and had to get my CPR card updated and FACT had the lowest prices for CPR for the HealthCare professional.
The class was about 3 hours long, and it was very laid back and informal. Besides myself and my husband, there was only one other person in the class, then the instructor.
The information was very basic and easy to understand.
If you need CPR training, go to FACT!

I had gotten a sewing machine and couldn't make it work. I was referred to B&C Sewing by the ladies at Joanne's Fabric.
I took my machine to B&C where the man did a look-over of it for free, and told me I couldn't get it to work because it was missing a huge peice and that it would cost more to fix than it would be to buy a comparable used one.
Their prices on used machines were REALLY great and low and the staff was very friendly and the man even helped me carry my big old broken machine out to the car for me!

I took a beginners sewing class at Bernina after seeing their booth at the Fair in 2004.
The pattern was a bit expensive, and I think they would have preferred if you bought your fabric & stuff from their store (Their fabric is alot more expensive than the cheap-o fabric I was interested in using).
Betty was the instructor and she taught me and the other girl in the class (very small class sizes!) how to make a double-sided apron with a pocket.
Having never used a sewing machine before, I found the instruction to be straightforward and simple and I now have a terrific apron that looks professionally made.

My husband and I visited the Kelley's Wireless at the Mall to buy cellphones. The girl behind the counter was pleasant enough and knew alot about the phones she was selling....but didn't know everything.
Specifically, she didn't know that there was a $39.99 connection fee for each phone. Even when we asked her outright if there would be any connection fees, she said 'No"
The next month, we get our bill from T-Mobile and there's $80 in connection fees associated with our bill.
We went back to the kiosk in the mall and the guy behind the counter was rude beyond anything I've ever had to deal with AND proclaimed that it was just his first day on the job, didn't know anything so come back another time. He seemed more interested talking on the phone with his friends than assisting customers.
If you want to buy a cellular phone, do it directly through the company. When you deal with kiosks like this, you are dealing with people who are selling 5 different brands of phones and who do not know about the products or plans they're selling. Save yourself the headache and hassle.

My husband and I were in desperate need of a haircut and a friend reccomended Sakie International.
Sakie is a beauty school which means that your hair will be cut by someone who is a student there. There is a licensed instructor in the room for assistance or advice if the student needs it.
Hair cuts are only $5 and that includes shampoo and conditioner. My husband has very difficult-to-style hair and the stylist at Sakie gave him the BEST haircut he's EVER had in his life.
No wait, friendly staff, good cuts and better prices. What more could you ask for?

Upon moving to Yakima, we found Nob Hill Animal Clinic as the vets to take care of our cat, Penelope, who was suffering from Cancer.
Their staff is so nice and caring and they were just super not only as we dealt with the cancer itself, but also when it came time to have our cat humanely euthanized. They were very compassionate and sent a condolance card the week afterwards, which I thought was very thoughtful and nice.
Their prices are not expensive, which was a blessing because feline cancer can be very costly to treat. They were always willing to talk to us on the phone and dealt with our issues promptly and efficiently.

Was horribly disappointed in Lydia's Treasures. The store is small and dusty and the staff (Lydia? Someone else) wasn't very helpful or pleasant at all. Barely acknowledged our walking into the store and seemed quite upset that we interrupted her crossword puzzle to ask if they had an outside table. I'll never shop at this store again just because of the complete rudeness of the staff (owner?) that we experienced.

Not too bad of a theater. Has obligatory sticky floors, popcorn-covered seats, surly staff of no-older-than-17 year olds. Seating prices are a bit high, and they never really have that many great movies to choose from. Still, it's right off the interstate and it's not like Yakima has a whole lot going for it. Check out a matinee and save yourself $5
