L'Appetito is a good place to go for Italian deli. I like their paninis and chicken salad. The coffee is good too. They also sell olive oil, chips, crackers, and other assorted Italian grocery items. In the summer they have a small outdoor seating area. It's a good place to go for a sandwich that is under $5.

Bockwinkel's did well before Jewel Osco and Whole Foods opened their doors a few years ago because it was one of the few grocers in the area. Since then it has been hard hit due to its high prices and small selection, which is probably why it moved to its new location near the new Montgomery Condos. I think that their prices are way too high.

Before Jewel Osco and Whole Foods moved in five years ago, Potash Bros was the place to buy food downtown. But since then I have not had a reason to go. There are always picketers outside because the store is anti-union and since the store is small there is not a lot of selection. They do not carry the New York Times either. I'd go to Whole Foods instead which is about three blocks away.

Pet Stuff is a great place to go for pet supplies, and there are not very many pet supply stores downtown. They even deliver for a small fee for orders under $100 and free for orders over $100. The store was started by a member of the anti-cruelty society which is an animal shelter across the street. It is definitely a great place to go.

Gold Coast Car Wash is great. You drive up and go inside while sipping coffee from their coffee bar and surfing the free internet. All the while, the staff washes and dries your car by hand. They let you know when you car is ready and you are off. It's very convenient and there are not many car washes downtown. It is on the expensive side though.

Coco Pazzo Cafe is my dad's favorite restaurant of all time, and I really love it too. The atmosphere is perfect. It is cozy, warm, and relaxing. The servers are all great. They offer numerous specials which are always delicious. I almost always order from the specials, although the items off the regular menu are good too including the Mista Salad and the Ravioli. The food is always delicious. And it's not too expensive. The tira misu is made in a coffee cup. And the wine is excellent. Coca Pazzo Cafe is really an excellent restaurant all the way around.

Pane Caldo has good Italian food inside their small, intimate space. The tables are close together due to the small space. Sometimes you have to wait for a table even if you have a reservation. The food is really good, although not fantastic. I love chocolate, but I'd pass on the chocolate dessert here. The pasta is delicious. The service is attentive. The bartender came over to our table to refill our wine glasses.

Jake is a nice boutique, although I thought it was a little small without a lot of selection. They carry good brands like Chip and Pepper jeans and cute tops to go with. They people who work there are happty and friendly. They also carry some jewelry. Parking can also be a problem (I ended up parking in the Jewel Osco). It would be better if they had a bigger selection.

Viking Ski Shop has really good service. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable. They ask why you are looking to buy ski equipment and what your skill level is. They don't seem to have that big of a selection, and I ended up with rather expensive ski boots. But on the plus side I went skiing for a week and they never hurt my feet and my feet never got frostbitten. It's also not in a great neighborhood, but it's not scary either. Overall, I'd recommend checking it out if you wanted to get some ski stuff.

Boguslaw is a good European tailor. If you want to get your jeans shortened, they can keep the original hem and sew it back on without even being able to tell. They do an excellent job and are expert tailors. The only bad part is that you have to pay cash, no credit cards are accepted. Also, it can be hard to find since you have to go down a winding hallway to get there, but there are signs to direct you.
