Ok, so Longs is the Fred Meyer of drugstores. Great prices on hair care products, cosmetics and sundries. They also have great sales on food items, although it's a crap shoot as to what they will have. The REAL reason we shop there is the small display of English and European canned goods. In Longs? Yes, you too can go to Longs for your Digestive Biscuits (delicious, chocolate coated crackers for the uninitiated), barley water, jams, jellys, "curried beanz" - and our favorite.. "Spotted Dick". We kid you not.

The name doesn't do much to describe this particular place - the People's Pub has a great selection of German beers and food. Where else can you order deep fried pickles, roasted stuffed beets and a Rauchbier (smoked beer!) to wash it down with? As if it need washing - the beets are wonderful and I don't like beets! The smoked bratwurst and pickled apples are good too, as are the more pedestrian burgers, fries, and American brews available. Ask for Lisa and tell her "Alan" sent you..

Formerly known as Pancho Villas (what were they thinking to change the name?), this is the real deal. At the top of Lake City Way, taking over where a little Spanish grocery with a tiny lunch counter left off, Senor Villa's is a great place for an authentic, tasty, and cheap visit south of the border. Homemade tortilla's, chile relleno's made with poblano's, and killer tamales with the option of some really traditional ingredients (I may not actually WANT tongue or tripe, but I love that it's available if I wanted to). The minimalist tacos are great - especially with barbecued pork - you'll be able to TASTE the main ingredient! Nice selection of tequila as well.

Is there anyone in north Seattle who hasn't at least driven by the Italian Spaghetti house? It's been here longer than many of us, and with good reason. Every neighborhood needs a decent reliable spaghetti house. Portions are large - full dinners come with antipasta, bread & breadsticks, salad AND soup, your entrée, and a nice little dish of spumoni for afters. Service can be slow but you're not in a hurry if you're coming here anyhow, right? Nothing fancy here, but who cares - the booth seats are wide enough for a youngster to snooze while you share a glass of chianti…

A little neighborhood pasta and pizza place across the street from Nathan Hale high school, Santorini's is (what a surprise, given the name) run by a very nice Greek family. Pretty busy on the weekends, but worth a wait. Good greek salads, and pasta with lots of olives and garlic. Greek beers and wine are a nice touch as is the nice feeling when the staff remember you! Good value and tasty

This new Pacific Northwest Pancake house was a delight to experience for the pancake afficianado. The Cherry Kijafa Crepes are great, as is the Dutch Baby and the signature dish, their German Apple Pancake (best be hungry). The corned beef hash with poached eggs nestled on top is the best I've had. Also recommend the sourdough flapjacks.
Be prepared to wait when it's busy though. The hostess was busy eating her breakfast as she took names, which was a little offputting but, hey - I can't blame her!

One of the quintessential places to take your out-of-town visitors. Get there early or you'll wait for a table. The blue plate special is ALWAYS good (as is the Ciappino), but you really can't go far wrong. Good martini's and strawberry lemonade last time we were there. Nice - but not fancy. Not inexpensive, but neither overpriced. Moderate enough to not need a real special occasion!
Try (and probably fail) to not stuff yourself on the bread. Desserts are delicious, but BIG - we shared the Peach Slump between 6 people!

What used to be a dives' dive - a ramshackle little green log cabin that smelled bad - is now a very attractive neighborhood pub. Completely refurbished a while back, with very nice open spaces - wood and glass - it is a great place to stop for a beer on the way home from work. Good food and pizza accompany the fine beer list, although a couple of the best items have been inexplicably removed from the menu (clam chowder and the Harvest sandwich). Try the quesadilla!

In the front is a neighborhood pub with a great selection of beers both on tap and in the bottle. In the back (reached around the side, actually) is a family-friendly room where you can enjoy your beer and food with the kids. The food is pretty good too - good burgers, great onion rings and a killer Philly steak sandwich (ask for extra onions and peppers). Bartenders and staff are great.

This is your grandparents restaurant and lounge! The restaurant section is scary - no windows and heavy on the smoked glass. The lounge, on the other hand is comfortably cool and dark, with plenty of TV's to watch a game. While you may SEE your grandpa (or perhaps an uncle or aunt) and there's not much of a beer list, the drinks are good, the food is good and there's plenty of it. Waitresses are funny, and there are comfy booths along the walls. Try Taco Thursdays or the Prime Rib on the weekends. Need a break from the hipster hangouts? Here' s the place.
