Lake City's big hobby shop is still around, despite an increasing dearth of such stores. They stock a huge selection of plastic kits (largely military, but lots of automotive and other topics, too), metal miniatures from armor to fantasy, and a large selection of wargames, boardgames and role playing games and supplies. Estes rockets, slot cars and even such old-time favorites as pinewood derby kits will be found here. A modest slot car setup is available to goof around on, and a big model train shop is in the basement. Please keep these guys in business!

More than a decade ago when I, a young, single dad went to try to purchase a house, I met Brad at a real estate seminar where he was volunteering. He (and his employer, Homestreet Bank) helped me wade through the morass of VA regulations and get my first house - and my second house, as well as two refinances as rates dropped. You'd have a hard time finding anyone more honest and approachable. Brad's always been willing to answer my questions, even when it's clear it wouldn't bring him any business.

Whether you have a puppy that needs some training, an older dog that needs a refresher, a grooming service or just a pet supply store, Great Dog Shoppe is a good choice (despite the annoying extra consonant and vowels). The owner is a wiz (so to speak) with dogs and the help are great. Saturday mornings there is a greyhound get-together which is a hoot to watch - highly recommended even if you don't have a grey and are just curious. All breeds served

A good appliance repairman is a treasure to be guarded, but aw.. what the heck - we'll share the gold. All Tech Appliance Service is a keeper. Not only are they knowledgeable, prompt, and reasonably priced, they took the time to educate us about proper (read "not what the soap manufacturer says") care and feeding of our washer and dryer. Who knew soap is way overused, and dryer sheets deteriorate rubber/plastic dryer parts? Our appliances are lasting longer and our clothes are cleaner because of these guys.

Old-school honest & hard-working plumbing here. When other plumbers just shrugged and told us to jackhammer up our bathroom and kitchen floor, the grizzled Marine from Drain Doctor rolled up his sleeves and finessed it (with plenty of body language) - didn't have to destroy anything but my own preconceptions about crewcuts. A class act, whose number we've kept for over ten years.

When you're done exercising your credit card (or even if you're enlightened and pay cash for everything) over at City People's, stop by Great Harvest for a free slice of fresh warm bread to munch while you ponder the variety of tasty baked goods. Try the low carb bread even if you don't care about carbs. Great sandwiches, too. Beware - the coffee is HOT. Great Harvest participates in many good causes and donates a lot of their goods. Everything is good here.

The place to go in Laurelhurst for upscale homey gifts. Kind of pricey, but good quality and an eclectic mix of stuff including womens clothing, furniture, a small nursery and even an embedded Tru-Value Hardware in the back (weird, I know). Some tasty little unusual chocolates and nibbles by the registers are a nice touch. It's easy to spend too much here!

Like many, we boycotted QFC after the wonderful Red Apple was ungraciously booted out of this space, but like everyone else we eventually gave this small grocery store a chance and are glad we did. QFC's not the cheapest chain (I believe they're actually owned by Fred Meyer!), but they do things right and their customer service is absolutely the tops.

Fred Meyer. A name to strike terror into the hearts of reluctant shoppers everywhere. Ok, so you can combine grocery shopping with clothes and other household goods - and even gardening/yard supplies if you go upstairs and outside. Pretty good deals occasionally on clothes, too. Still, when the zombie hordes come, this is the first place you'll find them - especially at night with that creepy lighting. Don't go after watching a George Romero flick, and when you do go, park in the upper lot and use the upstairs checkers to escape quickly when its busy. Good luck!

What can make a Walgreens different? Usually not much, but this one has an unusually good pharmacy staff. We should know, we've really put them through their paces. They've hassled with insurance companies and doctor offices on our behalf ad nauseum. We're pretty sure the one Evil Pharmacist they had is gone as well, which is a plus. The rest of the store is generic Walgreens,. Occasional great bargains on movies or miscellaneous stuff and if the checkout person forgets to tell you about the item of a day you get a free disposable camera (we've stopped accepting them - it gets embarrassing..)
