When our house needed a new roof a couple of years back, we called several roofing companies. Haider was neither the most nor the least expensive. They were however, the best and most thorough at explaining all the different options and what all the tradeoffs were. They also had an above average warranty and the workers were prompt and pleasant hard workers.

The northgate building is a very nice facility just to the southeast of Northgate Mall. The clinics and labs are open Saturdays so you can pop in for a convenient blood draw. The staff and caregivers appear to be quite knowledgeable and approachable. Group Health has also digitized most of their record-keeping, and you can even correspond with your doctor via a closed (read "secure") email system. A pleasant change from my previous caregiver!

Mixed review here. Good work, very good price, personable worker. Unfortunately, the installer called to reschedule not once, but twice and it was clear from conversation that he was perpetually overcommitted. To his credit, he was certainly apologetic, and gave us a free upgrade on our windshield (tinting), but you'll have to decide what it's worth to you. This is a mobile service (they come to you), and it was cheaper than the store-front businesses we called!

Nobody likes to have their car towed, and unless you've been particularly unlucky, you haven't had the opportunity or need to do much research in this field. Fortunately for you (and sadly for us), we have on occasion needed the services of a good tow truck. Gerber Towing is the one we call now. The drivers are careful and straightforward, and make the best of an often difficult and dangerous job without an attitude.

A hospital gift shop worth mentioning? Yes! The manager has made it her mission to have the best greeting card collection this side of the Cascades - and she succeeds. This is one of my best secrets - my family calls me The Card King and wonders where I find them, but now the secret's out. Note that due to remodeling, the gift shop has temporarily moved to the beautiful little Tea Room (another unsung jewel) towards the new Surgery Pavilion. They should be back in full business in October.

The University bookstore - sure, you can buy (and sell) your textbooks there - but you can also get just about any other book you can think of (special orders are a snap), as well as attend book signings, and buy an assortment of various other stuff - including a whole section of Husky gear for when the parents visit. What really sets the UW bookstore apart though, is that not only can you get refunded for the taxes you've paid (save those receipts!), at Christmas time they also offer free giftwrapping and free shipping! Get all your Christmas shopping done easily and gloat smugly over a mocha in the nice little café.

The 800 lb gorilla of bookstores (Amazon not having a storefront in which to browse), Barnes and Noble's University Village location is a pleasant experience. Apart from the
selection and variety one might expect, the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. We especially enjoy the large cut-rate section where the slow-moving books go to live (briefly). A nice café is upstairs, and there's a reading area in the northwest corner if you need to sample a few pages before committing to a purchase.

Ah what's the cinema scene without a good bargain theater? The Crest is a smallish theater with several screens, the usual snacks, etc - but at $3.00 a ticket instead of $9.00! If you can wait a little bit, odds are good that the movie you want will make it here - and a $3 movie is a more relaxing event in our family! They didn't use to accept credit cards, but they now do, so it gets easier. Not much parking in their lot, but easy street parking all around. Enjoy!

We've engaged Herban Feasts services twice now, both for holiday office parties. The first occasion was a big hit. Food was just different enough to catch the attention without raising eyebrows, delicious, attractively presented and a good value. Unfortunately, a year later it was another story. Still delicious, but portions were much smaller and more expensive. Despite assurances to the contrary, food intended for 100 didn't even feed 80.

One of a chain of charitable thrift stores known for color-coded sale items. An employee explained that each color corresponds to the week the item entered the store, and after it's been there a few weeks it goes on sale. Everything rotates through in 4-5 weeks or so. Good selection of women's clothing with some real steals on shoes occasionally. A fair bit of books, kitchen ware and some furniture and CDs round things out here.
