Tacked onto the end of a little mall in Kenmore (next to the Baskin Robbins!), Wild Birds Unlimited is a pleasant surprise. They carry everything from birdseed and feeders to decorative and top-end bird baths (as well as birding books, etc). The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and occasionally willing to dicker on the price of a larger item. Free samples of shade-grown coffee is a nice touch, as well.

Kids Time is a before and after school care just to the west of Wedgwood Elementary during the school year, and over towards the View Point fields during the summer. It is run by the Ravenna Eckstein Advisory Council, so rates are set by the city and are reasonable. With our youngest daughter attending for the last 5 years, we can confidently express our satisfaction with the program. The staff are always what make or break such a program and we've always been pleased with these staff member, despite the inevitable turnover (less than in similar places elsewhere).

Altered Space is a new, smaller thrift store almost directly across the street from a Value Village. The twist is that profits go to benefit various animal assistance programs (spay/neutering pojects, greyhound rescue, etc). They have nowhere near the stock of say, Value Village, but the prices are for the most part even lower, and we've gotten some real deals on clothing there. A ten cent book rack out front has yielded a few finds from time to time as well.

We've had three dogs who've been cared for and treated at Northeast Veterinary, and we have been consistently impressed with the vet's professionalism, knowledge and "bed-side" manner. When each of our first two dogs were terminally ill, Dr Christianson did an excellent job of explaining the problems, potential treatments and likely outcomes. We never felt pressured to do anything we didn't want to do, and the whole staff helped us get through a very difficult time with sensitivity and tact.

If you're looking for specialty grains for your next IPA or stout - or if you're just curious about the creative and fun hobby of homebrewing - Bob's is the place to go. Obviously a labor of love, Bob's is well stocked with the fore-mentioned grains, as well as a wide variety of hops and yeast, along with all the various hardware. Bob keeps a small library of books for sale as well as anything else you might need, and is always happy to talk shop or to help with technical advice.
Plus, the place just smells good!

The Meadowbrook Community Center has a before and after school care program which is the focus of this review. The actual facilities are beautiful and new, and include a nice pool. Unfortunately, the staff appears to be too young and too inexperienced to do a very good job of keeping track of the kids. This is really too bad, as the program was excellent back when it was using borrowed space from the nearby high school. Hopefully it will improve over time.

Ravenna Eckstein Community Center hosts a summer teen camp which is the focus of this review. Our daughter has enjoyed this program very much this summer. The facilities are in very good condition, attractive and functional. The staff and program are very good as well, with plenty of activities and field trips scheduled each week. We were pleasantly surprised with this program and have been pleased.

Highland Ice Arena is an affordable, year-round rink that is family friendly. They have all the usual things - rentals, snacks, etc, but they also cater to the hockey crowd with lessons and games in a separate rink. They also have space for parties or group events, and we've had a great time when we've attended skating parties there. The kids love the Zamboni!

We all know how hard it is to find a good mechanic, but Lloy Drinkard and his shop is such a find. All businesses have the occasional problem, but what really sets a good business apart is how it handles those problems. When there was a problem getting a newly-installed clutch to work properly, Europa went far beyond the extra mile, giving us a loaner car and spending days of labor trying to figure out the problem - which turned out to be an actual counterfeit OEM clutch that was just off enough to not work right. Lloy ate all the costs - we're sure he lost plenty of money on that transaction, but he gained our gratitude and loyalty!
