The Pike Place Market - probably on almost as many post cards as the Space Needle, but a lot more fun. The market is seriously HUGE. If you bring your out of town visitors make sure you allot enough time so they aren't rushed. Booths extend outside, and there are several levels below as well. Plenty of nice shops nearby - Post Alley is interesting. Sundays can be atrociously crowded on a nice day - tell 'em to meet you by the big brass pig if you get separated!

Formerly the site of a naval base (complete with small airport!), Magnuson park is huge - 350 acres - and hosts many athletic fields, picnic areas, trails and playgrounds. It also has a boat launch, swimming areas, a large off-leash dog area, large hangars used for sports as well as various community sales or activities and hosts a low-income housing project, to boot! It fronts on Sand Point Way, one of the worlds shortest highways (trivia factoid) and is a wonderful community resource.

We became familiar with the Seattle Aquarium after our daughter decided to volunteer there during high school. She enjoyed it so much, that she continued leading tours and volunteering until she was too old (19). The Aquarium has a number of unusual exhibits from ultra-rare leafy sea dragons to huge octopi, to baby sea otters. It's an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon, and the kids love the hands on tidal pools. Just be aware - when they say "No Smoking" on the dock, they are *serious*! ;-)
There is also an Imax theater attached.

Wedgwood Elementary is a top notch public elementary school that is comprised of grades one through five (weird - in my day, elementaries went through sixth grade!). The parents have been very involved in raising money for extending programs that have been cut by the city, such as music and art. There has been a fair bit of volunteer docent work going on as well, including the field of science! The building is decent, although there was a problem with lead in the pipes, it is under control now and supposedly was never hazardous (although it did give us pause!). Again, the parents - with the assistance of the principle - were responsible for seeing that issue was addressed. There's a before/after school program next door called Kids Time, reviewed separately.

When we first went to a Nathan Hale open house, we weren't expecting much and frankly did not expect it to even make our short list. It had a bad reputation at the time and a poor history. However what we didn't know was how successful the principal, Mr Benson, had been in turning this school around. We found we LOVED the faculty. The school has a killer music and drama department, a new stadium, and over the summer a new theater was built (finally!). Mr Benson has since left, but we trust his replacement will keep the ball rolling!

The Guild is a University District institution; a theater with some real character. You're unlikely to find the latest Disney movie here, but you're quite likely to find a decent foreign flick, occasionally a really obscure one. It's an aesthetically pleasing place, but sadly mismanaged. Oh well - try to ignore any jerks you run into and enjoy the movies!

Whether you just need good quality routine prenatal care, or have to deal with a high-risk pregnancy with complications, the doctors in the UW Medical Center's Obstetrics and Gynecology department are at the top of their class. When they're not taking care of patient, they are doing world-class research. It's comforting to know they are up on all the latest (as well as having an excellent grasp of the basic, it goes without saying).

While Key Arena does have a dumb name (named after a bank!), and enjoys many of the problems inherent in producing live music in a massive venue, the sound doesn't *have* to stink! Acts with careful sound engineers can actually have rather decent sound, as we recently discovered listening to Bruce Springsteen's solo act there. While we'd still rather go to shows at the Paramount, if it has to be a megashow, it's far better than the Tacoma Dome!

While we think two big stadiums across the street from each other is a waste of precious tax dollars, we do love a good ballgame, something the Mariners usually (well often, anyhow) provides. Even when they're off, it's still fun. A wide variety of food is available, from hot dogs to sushi and everything in between - but the hotdogs are great and reasonably inexpensive (~$5.00). Beer isn't cheap, but what else is new? Family specials include seats, hotdogs and cokes at a reduced price.

We've been happy customers of the Video Theater Movie Club (VTMC) for years and the worst thing that has ever happened is a VHS tape didn't play properly (it was promptly refunded, of course). VTMC has a good size library in both VHS and DVD format, and we love the Staff Picks display. Adult movies are available for those who desire, discreetly stored in a separate room. Prices are way inexpensive and late fees are typically waived - they just renew it for you!
