Smelly and non-airconditioned facilities, this place seems to be run by rude & clueless airheads who lately have been promoting it by stapling fliers to local houses!
Worse, when it was politely pointed out that defacing private property was likely not a good way to win over new customers, the manager claimed he didn't understand the problem. "Why, *he* gets things stuck to his door all the time - he just throws away what he doesn't want". One wonders what kind of a rundown apartment building he lives in..
When we picked our jaws up off the floor, we asked him not to do this ever again - but he would not agree to it! Wow..
(NOTE: this dump is in Lake City, not Kent as described in the address. For some reason, it appears to be non-editable. Apologies for the error)

Sunshine Cleaners is a small, neighborhood drycleaners in the heart of Wedgwood. No surprises here, just good quality drycleaning at a reasonable price, with reasonable turnaround times. The owners are personable and friendly as well, which is a nice bonus. The only down side is the ubiquitous dry cleaning coupons that come in the mail never seem to be for Sunshine (not that they're that expensive)!

It's easy to pick out the EMP from I-5, and point it out to visitors as "that-ugly-as-sin-monstrosity" just this side of the Space Needle, but that's only one aspect. Ugly could as easily be just simply strange - and it's what's inside that counts. If it were just the displays, I'd rate this lower. The displays are good and quite interesting, but let's just say the replay value is low. However, the EMP is used for much more than static (or interactive for that matter) displays. There are movies, workshops, concerts and more.. We've seen all sorts of people, from Amy Tan (with the Stephen King/Dave Barry band, The Wrockers) to Iron Butterfly. Our eldest daughter has attended several jazz workshops taught by some of the biggies in the field and has performed several times there as well (so we may be biased). Also, the inhouse restaurant is surprisingly good, inventive, and inexpensive - a great place to catch a meal before watching one of the frequent music related movies or documentaries - also a nice alternative to the space needle restaurant!

In a tiny little strip mall-let just east of Aurora on Northgate Way lives a huge selection of unusual beers from around the world. Ostensibly named "Big Star", it's known to it's customers better as "Hugest Beers" - a more apt, if less gramatical moniker reflect in appropriately huge letters on the sign out front. Within this little hole in the wall, you'll find a wide assortment of beers, ales, stouts, porters, and... probably whatever you're looking for (and much you didn't know existed). Nice selection of Belgian ales. The Brits and Germans are well represented, and there are Slavic & Japanese beers as well as the ubiquitous (but tasty) local microbrews. The proprietor is a bit crusty but warms up once he sees you a few times. Be warned - cash only here! Be adventurous and try something new!

Baker's is a Sunday brunch tradition for us. The choices are difficult though - breakfast? Lunch? Ice-cream? Ice cream! Portions for all of the above are huge and reasonably priced. The smoking section is more comfortable than the non-smoking which is sometimes chilly and is a charmless back room (hmm..). Sit at the counter and have a killer sundae, or sit in the booth and go back in time with a chicken fried steak breakfast with all the trimmings. They make their own chocolates as well!

Cougar Mountain specializes in, well, cougars - but they have plenty of other animals. Lots of colorful Macaws and other birds you can interact with, as well as some marsupials and other interesting critters. It's up in the mountains of Issaquah so even getting there is a pleasure! It's reminiscent of the small zoo's I rememer from the 60's - although much nicer, especially for the animals. Birthday parties are fun and Santa visits over the holidays. It won't replace Woodland Park, but then it's not trying to. Enjoyale

I've heard Scarecrow started with a private collection, but it's hard to believe when you wander through the incredible stacks of rare and obscure films (along with anything else you might want, of course). Not as inexpensive as the mainstream video rental stores, but I bet THEY aren't going to have a copy of The Frogs that you can rent! Be aware that you may need to put down a deposit for some of the rarer titles.. Movies for sale as well, and an attached coffee counter as well, of course!

Boards and Bits is a boardgame store located just to outside Seattle in Woodinville. They specialize in "German-style" boardgames and can put their hands on a hard-to-find copy of an out of print game for their customers. If you don't care to go pick up your order, they will ship within the Seattle area for a flat rate of only $6.00 overnight! With the current gas prices, that's looking even better.. :-P
The proprietor, Tom, is a good guy and goes out of his way to help his customers.

The Woodland Park Zoo is a deservedly famous (no, really!) Seattle institution. it does research on endangered species, it broke ground in developing more animal-friendly displays, and it even hosts small outdoor concerts in the summer, ranging from Art Garfunkel to the Cowboy Junkies!
Go early in the day to miss the crowds and find a place to park (rumor has it a new parking garage is in the works). Nifty butterfly exhibit and an ultra-cool nocturnal house, along with the great savanna exhibit are prime reasons to check it out. Take your time and explore!

Hipper than thou magazine shop with just about anything made of paper you can imagine. Fun to browse just to see what someone though would be a good idea to publish. The usual coffee stand, etc, with an interesting mix of hipsters, yuppies and aging hippies as well as the usual civilians. Fun to take visiting midwesterners to and expand their horizons... ;-)
