With the rise of the monolithic Home Depots and Loews, the smaller guys have been disappearing. Thats why Wallauer's is great to have in the neighborhood - they have years of experience in painting, wallpaper and even window treatments. The selection is very good, the prices are reasonable and the hours are very convenient for us weekend handymen.
What's particularly nice is that they' have been very willing to help me out even when there was no immediate sale coming -- I just had a lot of questions about paint quality and coverage and they were more than happy to help me out.

There is probably a barbershop in just about every strip mall around here, so it came as somewhat of a surprise when I happened upon Gino's, located next to the Wachovia bank in what seems to be a refurbished old home.
The barbers (3 of them) are all men and all very courteous and professional.
I've tried two of the three and have been more than satisfied. They were the only barbers who actually seemed to listen to what I wanted and didn;t just cut they way the always did.

I love browsing through bookshops and love the fact that this smallish, independent shop has been able to withstand the assauklt of the Barnes and NObles and Borders of the world.
The original owner sold the shop about 2 years ago, but the new owners have successfully maintained the comfortable nature of the shop, includingthe small gift items (soaps, bath accessories) in the rear of the store.
The selection is very good and the proximity to the Jacob Burns Film Center draws a steady crowd.

This store, located in the Arcadian shopping center, is one of only two stores that have been in the strip mall for almost 20 years.
I recently went there to buy a "starter" fishtank and the owner spent an unbelievable amount of time with me explaining the ways of fish care.
He also helped me select a set of fish to initially populate the tank and also gave me his personal guides for cleaning and feeding.
When a number of fish died after a few weeks, he graciously gave me (at no cost) some replacement fish and offered to test the water over the next few days to check for pH and ammonia levels.
Everything's great now and we couldn't be happier.

I am not the most handy guy around, so when I had some plumbing problems last year, I had two options -- call a plumber or embarass myself trying to fix it.
I opted for the "do it yourself" method and headed to RIM with a broken pipe from under my sink and a load of questions.
The guys behind the counter, who are most probably used tro dealing with professionals, were more than patient with my questions and didn't try to over-sell me on parts and tools that I didn't need.
They cut the pipe for me and I had the job done that very same day!
Highly recommended.

My kids are just at the age when it seems that they're being invited to a birthday party almost every weekend. Every time we need to find a gift, we make our way to the Broarcliff Toy Shop.
For a seemingly small store, they have a rather large inventory and we always walk away with something unique.
We have always found the staff very helpful and plan to re-visit the store many times over the next few years.

I usually don't use a travel agent, since I like to browse the web abd investigate the best deals for myself, but i recently needed to book a flight to New Mexico and was having trouble finding consistent flights and deals online.
I contacted the Briarcliff Travel Service and was abruptly put on hold. After 10 minutes, I called again and was told that someone would have to call me back.
The next day (I received no return call) I called again and spoke to somone. They apologized and took the information about my travel plans.
They never got back to me.
I left a message for the manager but still have not received a return call.

I gave my wife a gift certificate for The Haven and she had nothing but good words to report.
The staff was very friendly knowledgable, and more importantly, made her forget the stresses of the day as she relaxed for an hourlong massage.
The prices are reasonable (for Westchester):
Spa Manicure $ 15
Spa Manicure w/ hand treatment $ 27
Toe Polish Change $ 20
Basic Pedicure/no polish $ 28
Full Hour Massage $ 80
and it wasn't difficult to get an appointment.
She can't wait to go again.
They also have a comprehensive website at: http://www.havenofbriarcliff.com

When my wife's Saab was having some probelms, we initially went to the local Saab dealer, who explained that, among other things, her radiator cap needed to be replaced.
Since that seemed rather silly to me, I took the car to Billy's. Coincidentally, Billy used to work for Saab and repaired the various problems for a lot less money. He also declared the radiator cap to be in good working order (not surprisingly).
Since ten, I have always gone to Billy for everything from car inspections to tune-ups, oil changes and more serious car problems. He is very knowlegable, extremely friendly and doesn't mind taking a few minutes to look at a problem if I just happen to drive by with a question.
His success may be getting to be too much -- it often takes a few days to get scheduled for my oil change, but as long a s I plan ahead -- I'd rather go to him than to a national chain and have them try to sell me various additives and such that I don't really need.

Lefteris serves up classic Greek specialties for lunch and dinner daily. They also offer outdoor seating on the corner of main street and route 9 in the center of Tarrytown --- a huge draw during the warm weather months.
We've been to Lefteris quite a few times and have also order out from here -- and have never been disappointed. The hummus platter is a mainstay and is served with a plate of warm, moist pita bread. The lentil soup and lemon-chicken soup are also favorites, and are consistently good.
I've tried many of the main courses and can easily recommend any of them, particularly the lamb and beef dishes.
For dessert, baklava is a staple, but the Greek Yogurt with honey and nuts is a creamy delicacy that puts commercial yogurts to shame.
It's best to get there a bit early, as the lines to start forming, but even if you do have to wait a bit, it's certainly worth the trouble.
