Not interesting in earning a college degree but would love to enjoy some personal development classes for fun or enrichment? CCRI's Division for Lifelong Learning is bound to have a class to interest you. Friends have taken the dance classes and tell me that the instructors are the best. There's not pressure to become Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers - it's all about fun. Maybe you don't need swing dance lessons or salsa lessons, then how about baking, cake decorating, golf lessons or a yoga class? CCRI offers them all. You can go online and look at the course offerings and register online, over the phone or in person.

Ann & Hope is the site of America's very first outlet shopping center. While the original Ann & Hope store closed years ago, an indoor plaza of sorts has opened up in the same space. Among those outlets is the Westies Shoe Outlet which is directly across from the entrance of this historic mill. They have primarily women's and men's shoes and boots and offer a variety of name brand shoes at great prices. Check out the sales and close-outs as the bargains there are the best. These are not out-of-style shoes either - latest fashions are the majority of the offerings - and at deep discounts.

Jacky's Galaxie offers quick seating and a menu that includes Chinese and Thai food. I'm pretty traditional when it comes to Asian food but what I've tried here is always good. I especially recommend the asparagus and shrimp with garlic sauce. But for me, this is the place to go on Friday night when David O'Brien is behind the bar. David's quick sense of humor and attentiveness to his customers is what makes this a great Friday night stop.

I love Starbucks but hate the prices and the often arrogant atmosphere. Coffee Connection is like Cheers for coffee drinkers. Everyone here not only knows your name after just one or two visits, they know EXACTLY how you want your coffee! And what a variety of coffees you'll find! The high school kids are devoted customers buying the frozen coffee drinks, frozen protein drinks and pastries on their way to school (warning: it's very busy in there between 7 and 7:30 a.m.!). At Coffee Connection they'll steam your milk for a regular coffee and sprinkle cinnamond or cocoa on it as though you'd ordered that very expensive coffee at the other place - only you pay normal coffee prices. If you want skim, soy, decaf or flavored, they have it all. Be warned: if you order a bagel, that's a bit slow coming to you so patience is the name of the game. And because just about everyone going in is ordering specialty drinks, the line can move a bit slowly. But trust me, it's worth it as this gem of a coffee shop in Cumberland Hill. They have lunch/deli items as well but I've never had those.

Northern RI has made the family-style chicken dinner famous (in Rhode Island anyhow) and Savini's is one of those places known for serving that menu just right. But they have more than just family-style chicken with a menu that works when we bring the whole family with their varied tastes. There are two small private rooms that make private parties a terrific option - and with their affordable prices, you can actually afford the tab at the end of the night. There is a hall for rent above the restaurant - the restaurant is actually about five steps down so that it's almost below street level which makes it a bit dark. This isn't the place you bring the boss to impress him but instead, bring family so that you can enjoy a good meal and gab without feeling rushed.

Even if I hadn't known the owner, Bud Skurka, since I was a young girl, I'd still be recommending JGS Overhead Doors based on the service that Bud provides all his customers. For many years I had an old garage door that Bud would end up needing to repair at least once each year - his price to come and fix it (which he did very quickly) was so affordable. And when we finally bit the bullet and bought a new door, his price for the new door (installed) was hard to beat. He offers a wide variety of doors and automatic garade door openers and responds quickly to calls for service.

Chicken Power has come a long way since it was the little shack down in Valley Falls where you could buy bulk fresh chicken at wholesale prices. Now it's housed in a plaza with roomy seating and quick and easy take-out. Walk through the line and pick what you want (Boston Market-style) and get a tray at the cash register to take to your seats. It's a modified cafeteria style place but it's really the quality of the food that brings patrons back over and over again. Don't miss out on the chicken croquettes or the butternut squash. Dessert is limited to turnovers but even those are flaky and warm. Too rushed to cook? Stop here and get your fried or oven-roasted chicken to go with all the fixins. You won't want KFC ever again!

Davenport's has a menu with a wide variety of offerings including low-calorie and low-carb fare for dieters (the low-carb cheesecake is delicious!). The prices are moderate and there are fantastic early bird meal deals during the week that include a glass of wine or beer and dessert - you couldn't cook a meal at home for these prices! A lounge separated from the family side of the restaurant makes this place appealing to all. They are also offering a Sunday package deal to take in dinner and then take a bus to Providence for the PPAC shows - if you want a nice night out, it's a great deal and saves you from having to find a parking spot downtown.

My son was a patient at another doctor's office for allergy shots for several years before that doc decided to close up shop in Lincoln and make it very inconvenient for his northern RI patients. We called our pediatrician who made this wonderful recommendation. Dr. Zwetchkenbaum was named a RI top doc for good reason: his office is run with incredible efficiency yet every patient is given the attention he/she deserves. The staff is friendly and flexible and they offer extended hours so that working parents need not panic about how they are going to squeeze this appointment in each week. They run this place without paper: there's a laptop in every room and if you need a prescription, they fax it to the drugstore from the laptop as you visit the doc. Best yet, under their care, my son is finally making real progress and will likely be finished with allergy shots this June. Major insurance companies accepted.
