This is a hard one to review. On the one hand it's a real institution with knowledgable (if harried) sales staff and a great selection. On the other hand, its prices are consistently higher than all of their competition. They seem to have a very devoted following nonetheless. . .so many people think it's worth it. I get a bit annoyed at their refusal to play by the standards of the market.

Someone has taken an Israeli corner "markolit" store and transported it to the East Village. Here, you can get any of the items available in a similar store in Tel Aviv--fro prepared foods to shampoo to diapers to "amba" (the hard to find Israeli mango sauce. This place is amazing.

I shudder to think that there are people who's idea of felafel and hummus come from this mediocre restaurant. Everything is unispired--lots of iceberg lettuce--and far from fresh. Bad quality, no effort, and truly sub par Middle Eastern cuisine. It has no business being in this neighborhood where a decent Middle Eastern restaurant is badly needed.

The Malecon chicken, cafe con leche, fried sweet plantains, and rice and beans couldn't be better, and the price couldn't be lower. Although it's nothing to look at inside, and the service can be rushed, for take out you can't do better.
This is the best deal in NY--fast, cheap, and always delicious.
