The problem with eyeglass shopping in New York is, despite intense competition, there are frequently hidden costs that drive prices way up. If you have a taste for designer frames, and want to save big, head to this place. A very personable bunch, they are no nonsense and absolutely the lowest prices.

Like a lot of dog owners, I had a vet who I liked, but was never crazy about. That was the way I felt about Animal General—but then, by chance, I stumbled into Symphony Vets on Amsterdam Avenue. These people are the most serious, thorough, and dedicated animal lovers, and you feel so confident bringing your pet here. I could give any number of examples, but suffice it to say that Dr Campbell is a real pro.

The biggest surprise awaits you at this incredible and well-funded monument to the American film industry located in one of their earliest centers, Astoria, Queens. This place is a fun as it is educational, with all sorts of hands on exhibits to keep children amused. My personal favorite is the TV producer’s booth that lets you see and hear what happens behind the scene between producer and cameramen at a baseball game. Needless to say, great and classic films are screened in a huge theater here every week.

If you've never been here, you might assume that this museum was devoted to sabbath candles and portraits of ghetto life. While those things are here, this is first and foremost an excellent exploration of Jewish life and art. The permanent collection is a tour through Jedwish history, and the exhibits are frequently worth a special trip. If you go on one evening a week (Tuesdays or Thursdays depending) adnmission is pay what you can.

The selection could be a bit better, but for the basics you can't complain about this UWS store. If you can stand to wait in line, the prepared foods are worth the wait as well. Otherwise, you can always manage with packaged stuff. Just make sure to avoid this place on Friday afternoons, or any afternoon preceding a Jewish festival!

Just what you imagine it to be--an old style specialty store on the Lower East Side where Jewish food rules in all its timelessness. Nostalgia aside, the quality of the food and service here make it the best in the city, and just watching the countermen at work is worth a trip downtown.

The way to make opera affordable is to get to the Met on the day of performance and ask for standing tickets. Chances are you'll get them, and chances are excellent that even in a "sold out" show there will be plenty of places for you to sit after the first act. It's easier and less intrusive than it sounds.

So my radiator overheated right in front of “Great Bear.” Nothing about this place inspired my confidence—not the building nor the looks on the faces of the employees (i.e., “here comes a desperate sucker!”). But I took the risk. They spent a long time trying to figure out exactly what was wrong, but after diagnosing it and fixing it on the spot, they gave me a bill for, I swear 30 or 40 dollars in parts and maybe 20 in labor. A year later, no problems.

Fresh direct provides the best delivered groceries in the city. A sophisticated website makes shopping easy, and the delivery is extremely reliable. The only caveat here is to pay attention to prices--for while they beat grocery stores on most things, there are items here that are overpriced. All in all, beats shopping.
