This is the most bustling-because-people-love-it-here bookstores I’ve found (as compared to those bustling-because-we-have-an-intercom-system-or-café bookstores). It feels like every book was selected and arranged at least in part for its artistic impact. From gardening/home books displayed on the wall to a collection of esoteric and fascinating magazines, the staff will help you find what you need. It’s open and set up well for browsing.

Tucked into a space with plenty of nooks and crannies, Fremont Place Book feels like it’s one of the last relics of ‘old’ (pre-intensive-development) Fremont. That said, they highlight a great mix of the urban and urbane, offer passionate advice (when asked, of course), and display things in such a way that one could linger for hours – a hallmark of a good bookstore.

This spacious bookstore carries a wide assortment of books, with an emphasis on children's books. Their selection is expansive, and it's a warm store. Most of all, it's a cozy place where children and adults alike can browse uninterrupted. A new book (or old favorite) is always beckoning from their eye-catching window displays (which change frequently).

Lola, with Greek food as interpreted by the masterful Tom Douglas, is an oasis in the middle of the city. I know I can dine there and be transported away. A wide bar, a semi-open kitchen and a hotel lobby mere steps away all contribute to a lively atmosphere.
The food is divine - the skewers are perfect - and lunch is a fantastic experience (and a bargain, comparatively). The fried garbanzo beans are little salty morsels which will delight your taste buds; the house-made pita bread is warm and perfectly chewy; the accompanying spreads are piquant, salty, herby; just right (except for the carrot-sumac; ugh).
Lola is a place where it's best to let your senses be your guide - glance around, take note of what looks and smells good, and then try it all.

Nestled in historic Ballard, La Carta de Oaxaca is a diner's delight. This is a dream restaurant, personal yet bustling, light and airy, filled with delicious aromas from the open kitchen. From the women making tortillas by hand (corn; phenomenal) to the waiters constantly replenishing the salsa bar, the staff is gracious, kind, and hard-working. The food, of course is the highlight. House-made chips (w/ guacamole) bear little resemblance to store-bought chips; these chips are light, airy, crispy, crunchy, salty, and perfect. The posozle is perfectly seasoned, full of pork and hominy; the entomatadas are a revelation - try them with the green (tomatilla) sauce. The house specialty, mole negro, is complex and sweet, and rumor has it dessert is as well! Small plates ideal for sharing mean your meal can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish - either way, it will be delicious.

Located in downtown Winslow, this combination yarn store and tea shop is a knitter's/crafter's/tea-drinker's/city girl's delight. The owners and employees possess an uncanny ability to make every customer feel like the store is there solely for their needs. They have a generous selection of high-quality yarns, a lovely nook of books, and knitting needles made from all sorts of materials (including rosewood). They have shop patterns everywhere, and the products are breathtaking. Best of all, the shop patterns are complimentary with the purchase of yarn for the pattern. Most of all, it's a place you can sit, knit, and chat, and feel like you've taken a mini-vacation.

Greenwood's Fiber Gallery opened in May 2004 and continues to expand its selection of unusual, environmentally-conscious or whimsical yarns. They have a huge selection of yarns for baby items - soft and squishy, pastel or vibrant; and yarns for all sorts of other items: yarn made from hemp, bamboo, angora and alpaca; naturally colored wools; everything you could want. Best of all, most of the yarns are within easy reach, so you can touch anything your heart desires. The staff, all excellent knitters, are delightful as well.

I am absolutely, positively, 100% in love with Weaving Works. The whole store is a sensory delight - yarn and fiber of every color, texture, persuasion...wall after wall, bin after bin, delight after delight. They have an extensive collection - fancy yarns, simple yarns, local yarns, Japanese yarns, British yarns; books beyond belief, knitting needles, spinning supplies...Their prices are incredible (very fair, frequently the lowest in town). It is no wonder this yarn store has been in business for 31 years - they have clearly figured out what knitters want.
