The newly rededicated Baseball Hall of Fame has managed the unthinkable: it has brought improvement to an American tradition so deeply ingrained in the public consciousness that change is next to unthinkable. While the Hall of Fame part itself has seen little, change, the Museum has undergone a significant rejuvenation. The exhibits are now very contemporary, seeking to bring the visitor as much into the experience of the game as possible, without actually attending the games themselves. Of the exhibits, the best one was for me the exhibit on the legendary stadia, including several that have long since been razed, like Ebbets Field or the Polo Grounds. The daily schedule is peppered with special presentations and events that try to evoke the mystery and magic of baseball.
The only issue I had with the Fields of Dreams exhibit was that the stadia were exhibited somewhat haphazardly.

This museum is housed in a masterpiece of a building on the northern end of the Museum Mile. It offers some great exhibitions on the history of the city of New York. The most notable for me was the exhibition on the history of the city's legendary relationship with the theater. The exhibition even tries to trace the origin of the MacBeth curse to riots on Broadway. Furthermore, the museum sometimes presents incredible photographic shows, which are by themselves a good enough reason to make the train journey uptown.

For a long time, York Square Cinemas was the only option to see a film in downtown New Haven. Thankfully, the management did not let this fact get in the way of selecting interesting, non-mainstream films that greatly enriched the arts scene around the Yale campus.
Unfortunately, the venue itself needed a makeover. The seats tended towards being uncomfortable, and the screens were rather small.

The main achievement of the Munson-Williams Arts Institute is the fact that it still puts on incredible exhibitions (like last-year's Rodin exhibit) in spite of the county and city's recent financial woes. The permanent collection itself is well worth seeing, as well, but my favorite part are the rooms in the annex, which testify not only to the riches of the founding Uticans, but also to the fact that Utica was at the time of the Institute's foundation a city of wealth, culture and refinement.
Another plus is the museum store, which offers a nice variety of art-related artifacts that are otherwise hard to find anywhere close. Handcrafted jewelry is offered that makes wonderful gifts.

This quirky Greenwich Village store is geared, obviously, to the science of the prophylactic device. As they certainly have an unmatched selection of those available (also for sale online, apparently), the store has a great appeal for anyone trying to find those novelty bachelor or bachelorette party or birthday party presents.
On the other hand, the store's name sets its merchandise squarely into one direction.

That all these works are on show in a museum would have already been a great achievement. The fact that all these works were collected by privately by one person makes it so much harder to believe. The works are displayed in the late owner's mansion on Fifth Avenue, close to the much bigger Metropolitan Museum of art. The obligatory admission is well worth the price, as the works are displayed in an intimate, extremely well thought-out arrangement. They do not necessarily follow any strict chronology, the main idea is their impact on the visitor. And what an impact they have. This collection is to be taken personally, like it was acquired by the late Mr. Frick

This used-book store is like no other bookstore in New York City, or anywhere else for that matter. The first difference that you will notice, is its size. Used books cover every available inch of two rather big floors in the Union Square neighborhood store. The second main difference is the selection, as is seems to comprise books from every available range of topics, from fiction to hard science. And the third, possibly most important characteristic of the Strand is the fact that on the low level, they offer the customer the review book section, where sell, at a discount, books that had been sent out to reviewers and have been read perhaps, but probably not even, once.
Also, bring your books here once you are done with them to sell.

This is the quirkiest little store, that could only be found in Manhattan and stay in business!
When my mother first walked by this store, I swear she squealed in delight as it reminded her of being a little girl. The store owner travels around collecting vintage kitchen wares, such as plates, mugs, glasses, bowls, measuring cups, salt and pepper shakers, cocktail shakers, mixing bowls, to sell at his store. They are arranged so beautifully, in all colors of the rainbow. There is also a great collection of vintage Christmas ornaments and greeting cards.
For anyone wanting to relive his or her childhood, or for those who love vintage and want to bring it into their home, Mr. Pink is the place to go.
Call ahead to find out the hours.

Founded by the Franciscan monks as the tenth mission on their slow journey north by the California coastline, this is by far the best preserved one. The big monastery and church evoke images of European grandeur and seem oddly in place in the rugged California coastline. The visit takes in the church and the monastery and comprises quite a bit of the art that the monks brought with them. As this si the best architectural remnant from the Spanish rule of California, this is a must-see if you find yourself in Santa Barbara.

The legendary Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio (named after the locally based Fifth Third Bank), well deserves its reputation. The baseball stadium offers great views of the game, low stands, so that all the fans can feel included in the game, and even decent view to the non-admission paying fans from the adjoining restaurants. There is even a stretch of the fence in right field where you can see the game from outside the stadium, advertised by the nice little life-size statue of peeking viewers.
The concession stands are adequate and parking can be annoying.
