Fort Stanwix is a national monument governed by the US National Park Service. Admission is free so it is a perfect way to spend a fun and educational day with the family. It is also a great place for history buffs. This was an important part of the Revolutionary War. You can join a ranger led introduction to what went on at Fort Stanwix and then join him or her for a guided tour of the Fort to really understand what went on there. There are also military reenactments and going into the barracks you can experience what it was like for a soldier in the 1700s.
For students in the area, many times they take field trips to learn about American history that happened right in their backyards.

Next time you are in a restaurant, especially in upstate NY, flip over your plate. Chances are, it is stamped "Syracuse China." This store offers a range of china products, from everyday to formal sets of china, and basics like glasses, salt and pepper shakers. Every summer, they have a tent sale where, if you are willing to dig around in bins in search of matching sets, you can put together some great deals on wonderful china. When I was there, they had cosmopolitan glasses and beer glasses for .25 each and other bar ware at prices up to $2 a piece. I got a great set of formal dining with gold foil for 8 for prices ranging for $1-$3 a piece.

Turning Stone resort and casino is owned by the Oneida Indian Nation. What started as just a casino has now grown into a resort, with good musical acts, a Brazilian steakhouse, spa, a few golf courses and event space for large weddings, as well as hotels to stay the night. All types of casino games can be played here and the crowd is mixed between locals blowing through their paychecks, college kids who drive in for the night and people there for the golf, spa, a wedding, or to eat and here some music.
They have been getting some pretty big names at the casino lately, including an upcoming Steve Miller Band concert.

The Ommegang brewery (the word "ommegang" seems to mean "pub crawl" in Belgium) is a nice little brewery with a few great beer choices. Unlike some of the bigger breweries, the visit of the premises is free, but since the brewery is indeed quite small, it does not last all that long, either. The tour guides are local, and seem to be more
concerned about getting all the guests to the tastings, which is what most of us came there for anyway. Some of the beers are excellent (notably Rare Vos, and their summer white brew), while some are just plain good. The specialty of Ommegang is that they give their yeast to a nearby farmer, who produces some exquisite cheeses, also for sale in the store.
However, to enjoy the brewery, you first have to get there. I assume that most people do what I did and go to the brewery after visiting Cooperstown, and the signs from that direction are misleading, confusing, or non-existent, I missed the direction twice and was so unsure at one point that I went back on the same road, just to have to turn around
again. The signs seem to be better coming from the other direction.

Heid's of Liverpool is an institution to hot dog lovers. This unassuming little hot dog house serves conies, or white hot dogs, for which they are best known. My grandfather, who grew up in Liverpool and on Heid's, started taking me as a kid and I still make special trips there just for the hot dogs. There is seating indoors and outdoors if you choose to eat at Heid's. You walk in and are served sort of cafeteria style--also worth picking up with your hot dog is the out of this world potato salad. Top it off with some Byrne Dairy chocolate milk, and you have a perfect meal!

Skaneateles is one of the most beautiful towns I have ever been to. The lake is crystal clear and the Finger Lakes area is breathtaking. Mirbeau looks like something you would find in the French countryside. There are rooms to stay overnight and a delicious dining room with a great wine list. The true highlight are the spa facilities. Everything from wraps to massages to scrubs to facials to hair and nail treatments are offered here. The technicians are quiet, making you feel comfortable. The products are all top quality and many aromatherapy scents are available to customize your experience. The treatment rooms are designed for privacy and relaxation, making you feel like you are being pampered in your own home.

You go to the DInosaur Bar-B-Q not only for the stick to your ribs fabulous food, but also for the unique atmosphere. Founded by bikers, when you first drive up to the Dinosaur, you will see rows of bikes parked out front. Yet you walk inside and see the mix of hardcore bikers and business people in their three piece suits. The place is laid back and informal, a perfect place to grab some food and beers with your friends. Take home the BBQ sauce and get your hands on the Dinosaur cookbook if you can.

This wonderful museum in Central New York is housed in a building designed by I.M. Pei. The museum's specialty are temporary exhibitions, along with presentations by art experts from all across the United States. The museum's focus is on contemporary art, so lover of earlier works should be warned. For lovers of modern art, however, the Exhibitions are well presented.
Another great feature of the museum is the fact that promotes an artistic community through events and trips, like the Glimmerglass Opera Day Trip, a great success.
And, since the museum is free, it definitely falls under the "bargain" category.

If you find yourself in the South Berkshires, I would strongly recommend a stay in this quite, pleasant country inn with a remarkable history. The rooms are impeccable, with each having a private bath and telephone, and we found the entire staff to be extremely pleasant and helpful. The inn has a great traditional atmosphere with plenty of sitting room and a lovely fireplace.
To complement the rooms, the inn runs one of the best restaurants (Wednesday through Sunday) in the South Berkshires, and our dinner there was one of the most memorable culinary experiences of my entire life. The food here alone would be worth the trip from New York.
Alas, the Inn's popularity means reservations are recommended, and two nights' stay is often required in the peak seasons.

Cleveland's most famous museum is a worthy trip to and through the history of popular music and rock'n'roll. The collection is housed in an incredible architectural achievement by I. M. Pei, which opens it up, rather than closes it from the Lake Erie waterfront. The museum features not only artifacts, but rightly prides itself on a great collection of multimedia, videos, and films. Then again, one should expect nothing less in this post-MTV era. The place is inclusive to every fan of popular music.
The admission price, however, at $20, is by no means a bargain.
