It's hard to imagine, but San Francisco hasn't had a guitar store of this size or caliber as long as I've been here. It's a very good store, very good selection of guitars (electric & accoustic), amps, pedals, etc. They let you try out guitars and amps with complimentary cords so you can finally see how you sound on a $10,000 strat with that awesome amp. The acoustic room is very very nice also.

Green Apple Books is hands down the best bookstore in the city of San Francisco. It has a huge selection of new books, and there is an entire annex to buy and sell used books, CDs and DVDs. The staff picks are always phenomenal interesting reads that you'd never see in the massive chains like Barnes and Noble. Check out the new fiction and non-fiction downstairs, and then head upstairs to see books on religion, history, art, ANYTHING you possibly could want to learn about. Definitely check this place out.

Flax is a huge store. It has sections for every concievable art project you could possibly think of. I was working on a marble sculpture and they have rasps and chisels for just that. They have a huge paper department, lots of paints, pencils, pens, and in every brand and variety you could ever want. It isn't the cheapest art store I've ever been to, but it does have a great selection.

Dudes, so this is a pretty rad store. I mean it took me about 15 minutes to stop giggling so I could actually look at what they had in there, but it was worth it. It's pretty sweet. Good Vibrations presents the world of sex toys to the tons of people who would never otherwise go into an adult store. They've got everything: videos, books, toys, dildos, vibrators, leather strappy things, whips, the red ball mask thing from Pulp Fiction, everything.

I have visited Castro Dental Group three times, and each time has been uncomfortable and slightly disturbing. I got three fillings there, which still feel loose and painful when I eat sugary foods. While I was being operated on, the dentist, who is a shady character, loudly yelled at his assistant for taking too long for looking for a tool. There is definitely a bad vibe in this place. Also, the rooms are so small, that I routinely had to lift my legs so the nurse could get by WHILE I WAS BEING OPERATED ON. The dentist himself is a strange guy with a strange manner that made me uncomfortable. He talked to me for 20 minutes about how 80% of dentists abuse their own nitrous oxide. Not exactly what I want to hear from MY dentist. I could go on and on. Don't go here.

I actually worked at Aquarium of the Bay for a while and nearly every guest that came through had the same disappointed reaction: "That's it?" It's just too short for what you pay for. The exhibits are nice. The first one is a room with several tanks that let you see fish native to the bay. The second exhibit, the biggest one, is a very cool tunnel built under a gigantic fish tank, so it looks like you are walking under water. The third one are touch pools where you can touch bat rays, sharks, starfish, and more. If you have an hour and some money to kill, fine. Go. Otherwise, it really isn't worth it.

I have used Costumes on Haight for a lot of different situations. It's got everything kind of costume, mask, wig, and novelty you could possibly imagine. It's great if you have a costume party to go to or if you're putting up a show... I have used Costumes on Haight almost exclusively for costuming the sketch comedy show I produce. Very good quality and reliable.

It's surprising how few used book stores there are in San Francisco, but Aardvark has to be in the top five. It is very centrally located, it's near to pretty much anything, and it has a very decend selection. It's not the greatest used book store in the world, it's no Strand, and it's doesn't even to compare to Green Apple, but it definitely does hold its own.

The Purple Onion used to be one of San Francisco’s most revered comedy joints. It hosted all the big names of comedy in the 80’s, especially Robin Williams. It also gave stage to a very exciting improvisation scene. Then, inexplicably, it just all died and went away. Thank god The Purple Onion is back and on the comedy scene again. You have to check out the fresh faces of San Francisco comedy and The Purple Onion is probably the best place to do it.

Martha Egan is a local store that sells very cool, very hip, and very funky clothes. Martha Egan is located at the base of North Beach, so you won’t find the super trendy and extraordinarily expensive price tags that you do deeper in North Beach. There are some really cool styles here. The clothes are all very creatively made and if you buy something, chances are you won’t see anybody else wearing it.
