3 Brothers From China is one of the few "real" Cantonese Chinese restaurants in Contra Costa. They serve up standard American style Chinese food but also have a separate Chinese language menu where you can get the good stuff! The restaurant is popular with asian families in the neighborhood, and it's usually packed on Chinese New Year.
The Chinese menu has a variety of dishes to choose from, all at lower prices than the other menu. They usually serve a traditional herbal soup along with your choice of entrées, and dessert. My favorites are the cold jellyfish appetizer, the claypot dishes, stuffed tofu, and stir-fried long beans. Nice steamed fish too.

I can be a bit harsh on the Malaysian restaurants in the Bay Area, since I've been to Malaysia so many times and am always missing the fabulous food there!
That said, Banyan Tree is one of the better options for Malaysian/Singaporean (and Thai) food that we have, and especially nice for the Contra Costa area. The restaurant serves up some more unusual items, such as rojak (cold salad of fried tofu and pineapple mixed with shrimp paste- really, it's good!) as well as the standards of roti canai (paper thin flat bread served with a curry dipping sauce), satay, and popiah.
Entrees are a mixed bag- I didn't like their steamed fish, and the Hainese Chicken was a bit tough. Very nice traditional herbal soup, and I also liked their veggie dishes. Try the Ladyfingers Belachan, or Kang Kong Belachan. Both are good tasting.
The place is always very quiet when we visited, and decor is a bit kooky, but servers are friendly and helpful. Free dessert too.

Damo sushi is not a bad option for sushi in the Contra Costa area. They have decently priced bento boxes and combo dishes with options for teriyak, tempura and sushi, and a large selection of rolls. The food isn't spectacular and it's not exactly traditional Japanese, but still it hits the spot. Make sure to check the daily specials too! And they often have a few nice korean dishes too.
The restaurant is conveniently located in what is becoming the central asian shopping center of Concord- with the supermarket, County Square and couple of other good asian restaurants and shops.
Free miso soup and edamame.

Korea Palace is my favorite (and quite possibly the only) Korean restaurant in the Walnut Creek/Concord/Pleasant Hill area. The place is family owned and is a bit quiet during dinner, but the food is truly wonderful. They do a great bibimbop (rice with meat and veggies cooked in a stone pot- and only $10!), as well as bulgogi (marinated and grilled beef), short ribs, and hot tofu soups. They are very generous with the little dishes of appetizers that are given free with meals- which include a variety of pickles and kimchee, veggies, tofu, cold salads, and even noodles.
A great find for the neighborhood and this place would even stand up to other Korean restaurants in SF!

My friends took me here over the weekend to celebrate my upcoming birthday, and it really was perfect for the occasion. I love the feel of Belden Alley, with it's twinkling fairy lights strung overhead and ample outdoor seating at every restaurant. Perfect for the warm weather we've been having right now.
We arrived about 30 minutes early and the host was kind enough to seat us anyway, outdoors and under a heat lamp. We shared a pot of steamed mussels and clams, which is a signature dish at the restaurant. They have 6 or 7 types of broth you can choose have your mussels cooked in and the amount of seafood was very generous. I also enjoyed the appetizers we chose: potato wrapped scallops and tuna tartare, though I have to say portions were tiny for the price. Frites were rather tasteless and the complementary bread was too hard for my liking. But the entrees we tried, both grilled fish, were also perfectly cooked and sauced. The trio of sorbets for dessert were a bit icy, but still nice.
Even with the minor disappointments, we still really enjoyed ourselves.
This is definitely a wonderful place to spend a leisurely night with a bottle of wine and some great seafood.

They were giving away their famed creampuffs the day before their grand opening, so I got the chance to have a try. And I went back over the weekend- a one hour wait for just 6 creampuffs, but yes, it was well worth it! Their creampuffs are light and delicious, not overly sweet, and just as great as I've remember from their locations overseas. Yum. As of now, only the vanilla filling is available, but I can't wait to head back later on to try their green tea version.
What a great addition to San Francisco.

There are many Vietnamese restaurants in SF, but the majority focus solely on pho and southern Vietnamese style cooking. Bodega Bistro is a step above your typical pho joint, decor and food wise, and has a few northern Vietnamese items on the menu that can't be found elsewhere.
My favorite dish by far was Cha Ca Hanoi, one of the most famous dishes in Hanoi. It was exactly as I remembered the real thing when I visited the city a few months ago. Pieces of fish browned in butter and turmeric, cooked up with fresh dill, and served with all the fixings to make yourself a lettuce wrap. Delicious!
They also have a nice version of papaya salad with bits of beef jerky mixed in and shaking beef with lemon pepper dipping sauce (wonderful).
I'm be back again to try the squab and the ban xeo.

Since the owner is a family friend, I've been visiting this little Mission shop since I was a kid. Now I realize how lucky I was! Head straight to the back of the store and look for the ladies grinding masa and making their delicious homemade tortillas. They also sell the best chicken tamales and carnitas I've ever had, as well as breakfast burritos and lots of other prepared foods.
The shop also sells everything you would need to prepare your own mexican meal at home.

The Imperial Tea Court is a tea shop/tea cafe in the Ferry Building with dozens of high quality loose leaf teas to choose from. You can buy them in bulk or sit down at the cafe and have a drink. With the latter you can choose from a cup of tea with a pot of hot water for refills, or have the more elaborate traditional tea service. Try the Dragon Well, any of their white teas, and their ginger infused ginseng tea.
At lunch there is a list of dim sum specialties along with other items such as beef noodles and other dishes. I highly recommend the noodle dish, as well as the dumplings cooked in tea.
The shop has a huge variety of pots, cups, and tea sets on display and for sale and the staff is hugely knowledgeable on the teas as well.

Nile Cafe is a couple doors down from my new favorite restaurant, Tajine, and is such a great find! The owners/staff are super friendly and they have great arabic tea for $3.50 a pot. They also have some amazing arabic coffee and a nice selection of pastries. They have a menu of dinner items as well, though I haven't tried their food yet.
Best of all is the hookah! 20 different flavors and about $12 for a session. This is the best place in the city for hookah and the cafe has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere too.
Open until 1 AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
