Tani's Kitchen is a seriously tiny Japanese restaurant with only 3 tables and a bar area for eating. It's run by a Japanese family, and while the owners can be a little strict ("no outside drinks! Sit there! Don't talk so loud!") they're also friendly and the food is good. They're mainly known for their grilled combo plates, like teriyaki salmon, chicken katsu, karaage. Look for the special dishes, such as potato croquettes, or the japanese hamburger, which are fabulous and you probably won't find elsewhere.
Prices are unbelievbly cheap- I just ate a bowl of beef soba noodles for $4.95. Quite filling great tasting broth, and tender beef. Definitely a place to go for good food on a budget.

My favorite cafe to visit for Hong Kong style desserts. This place is tiny but the menu is astounding- there is everything you can think of on here, and more. There are hot and cold desserts - some with fresh fruit, sago, and coconut milk. You have dozens of options to choose from, what type of fruit, jelly (snow frog?) , coconut milk or sugar water. There are also some interesting sweet herbal soups on the menu, which are probably healthy as well. There is also mango mousse, tofu desserts, bubble tea, black sesame or peanut soup. It's all delish. Some entree items as well, such as ramen, "western style" spaghetti, etc.
Last time I visited, I couldn't decide on just one dessert, so I ended up with two!

Some locations of King of Thai are better than others. I think the Taraval location does a great job with noodle soups. They have a variety, including a few different kinds of beef, chicken, seafood, tom yum, etc. Also on the menu are fried noodles (pad thai, pad see ew, etc), rice plates, and curries. My favorite dish here is the beef noodle soup with rice stick noodles. The broth is flavorful and it's very filling. You can't beat the price, for about $5. It's a good neighborhood place to eat on a budget.

Bristol Farms is located in the downstairs area of the newly expanded Westfield SF Shopping Centre. It's an amazing addition the the downtown area, as there was no supermarket in the area before. I'm already in love! They have a great deli and cooked food section, bakery, gourmet chocolates, a huge variety of free-range, organic, meats and vegetables. The market is more upscale, so prices do reflect this, but sale items are a bargain. I like how there is a comprehensive natural/herbal remedies section and health and body section, with brands like Burts Bees, Jason Natural, etc.

The Westfield SF Shopping Centre recently got much larger, with the new expansion into the old Emporium space. The result is amazing! The old glass rotunda ceiling has been restored and is a centerpiece for shops such as Bloomingdales, Zara, MNG Mango, J Crew, H&M, just to name a few. There are over a hundred new stores, but best of all are the new restaurants and the fabulous new food court downstairs. There is also Bristol Farms, a supermarket downstairs, which is a welcome addition to the downtown area. I love how MUNI and BART public transportation is easily accesible downstairs.

This review is of the newest location of Beard Papa, located downstairs inside of the new Westfield Shopping Centre. I've been to Beard Papa numerous times overseas and have always loved their freshly made plain vanilla bean cream puffs. I found the cream puffs at this location to be quite disappointing because both times when I bought a few, the outer puff has been soggy instead of fresh and warm. I realized this is because to save time, the staff has been pre-baking the pastries in huge batches so they're no longer fresh by the time they are filled and passed on to the customer! What a disappointment and the quality is obviously lost.
I believe the location on Yerba Buena Lane does not do this, and neither does any of the locations I've been to overseas! Every time I visited, I had to wait until fresh pastries came out of the oven. It's just not the same.

I had a drink at Teaz Me while checking out the new Westfield Shopping Centre. Teaz Me is part of the food court on the lower level. I found the prices to be a bit high, especially just for plain brewed tea! Along with hot and cold teas, sparkling tea, chai, smoothies etc. Teaz me serves up a variety of salads, wraps, desserts and pastries. I tried a sparkling tea and thought it much too sweet for my taste. I've also had a non-sweetened hot tea, which was fine. I was tempted by their salads, so I may be back to try those.

I've been to Be My Guest twice now, and I've become less impressed than I was at first. The interior and ambiance of the restaurant is really cool and modern and I love how there's a full bar along with the restaurant. I wish the food would live up to expectations! The flaming chicken tasted like a costco roasted chicken, albeit set on fire to make it slightly more interesting. The pumpkin curry was overly sweet and not spicy at all. In fact, the overall flavor of everything was sweet, quite unlike the food I've actually eaten in Thailand! I still enjoyed the fried fish cakes though.

This is an offshoot of the original Berkeley restaurant, and has a similar menu. Breads of India is known for using high quality ingredients and free-range chicken, which is just wonderful since my family tries to eat healthy. The menu isn't huge, but everything they have is done well. I love their naan and their curries are good too. Nice atmosphere and nice outdoor seating as well, though a bit more expensive than the other Indian restaurants I've been to. It's a good mid-range dinner option for downtown Walnut Creek.

Ali Baba is a little middle-eastern fast food type restaurant in the industrial part of South San Francisco. You order at the front, then wait for your number to be called to get your food. There are a variety of lunch specials, including falafel sandwiches, chicken and lamb shwarma, kebabs, salads, hummous, pitas, etc. The amount of food is quite generous too and of good quality. I was impressed by the plate of kofte kebab (spiced ground meat shaped into balls and grilled), lentil rice, and side salads.
The place is pretty busy at lunch, so it may be difficult to find parking nearby.
