The location is right, take the kids to the playground then walk across the street and treat yourself. Or drop the kids at school around the corner first.

Get a punch card and earn free pizza.
They have a spinach apple salad that tastes like more than the typical pizza-topping-as-salad, but the lemon dressing is pretty mouth-puckering, so I recommend it on the side.

A great bookstore is so valuable. New and Used books on all subjects. If you know what you want Elliott Bay probably has it. If you don't know what you want you will probably find several books to buy. They offer a good selection of children's books, along with a little castle playhouse.
Fabulous author readings. A decent cafe. Late hours.

The staff here is friendly and provides good services aimed at relieving injury and chronic pain. Why live with pain when you can get ultrasound treatment, electrical stimulation, ice massage, and targeted exercise? They even use some rather primitive looking tools that do the trick. And will send you home with therabands and athletic tape to support your injured parts or help correct your posture.
All this and not even enough of a wait to peruse the latest celebrity news in US magazine.

Tricoter is located just past the south entrance to the Arboretum on Madison street. It's right on the dividing line between low-rent and Madison Park, but has it's character in the high-rent part of town.
You walk in and see a bunch of women together with their expensive yarns knitting as a leisure pursuit, and you just don't fit in. Plus they sit blocking the pattern bookshelves, which makes it impossible to peruse the selection.
No "peace fleece" here. Mind you, they do have quality yarns arranged by color to fabulous effect. And I can't say if their prices are truly high or if it just gives off an aura, but I always spend too much, and I don't feel welcome like some of the other yarn stores in town.

A nice mid-sized museum, in an architecturally interesting space. For when you have an hour or so to kill and want some good free entertainment.
Stop by the cafe for a reasonably priced and bite and you have everything you need.
They have some great thought-provoking and real quality exhibits.
The permanent collection suffers from gold-frame factor, but still has quality works.
Throw them a few dollars in the donation box if you liked what you saw.

Cafe Besalu offers a tasty selection of fresh handmade French pastries including flaky croissants, brioche and a few tasty offerings of quiche, this being the preferable shallow tart-pan style quiche rather than the overly eggy deep-dish pie style.
Few, if any places in town do better than James at Besalu. Their ginger biscuit is addictive. Their espresso isn't shoddy either. Perfect for a morning treat or an early afternoon pick-me-up.

City People's has been in the Madison Valley since back when people just called it the Central District, before all the cute little shops popped up around it. They have a friendly staff that can help you find the resources to answer your plant and gardening questions. They have a pretty good selection of perennials, shade plants, water garden plants, and some eye-popping ornamentals.
Will you find the rare salvia you are looking for? Maybe not, then again they just might have it. Most of the basics are here, and a few standouts too.
Go on inside and pet one of the resident cats laying around in the displays, look at some fancy soaps, and pick up a few cute birthday cards for upcoming celebrations.
Try and get on the mailing list for the 15% off coupons or use one from the Chinook Book, which will bring the price down more into the average range.
