Not quite the Starbucks type of feel, but you get the gist. It is more a tea shop feel than a coffee shop. While I was not crazy about the taste of the expresso, it sure kept me awake that day. The pastry however, was quite good and their was a fair selection. There is not a place to sit, which makes it difficult to savor your goodies. It was charming inside.

Salerno's has several excellent items. There bread is a dense heavy tasty loaf with a wonderful crust. This bread is used on their many delicious subs and included with their generous italian dishes that are quite reasonable. They also have several great stuffed breads.
The pizza is a nice crust - you can ask for thin and crispy or thicker crust. The sauce is homemade and the portions are generous. On Mondays and Tuesdays they have a discounted large mozzerella pizza deal, and they don't skimp on ingredients.
Fridays are very busy, they are closed on Sundays. While the atmosphere is very simple, it is a great place to eat.

Chick's has all the standards that remind me of a 50's drive-thru, as well as great fried seafood. Lobster rolls are a great classic, as are their shrimp. They have combos akin to a blue plate special, as well as chicken and burgers.
A nice spot to sit outside to eat, Chick's is always busy. Business folks gather for lunch, along with families, teens, bikers, and families.
There is a huge parking lot, and secret tip for those who want to walk on the West Haven beach walk or attend the various summer events such as the concerts or just go to the beach, is you don't have to pay $7 for parking, you can get free parking if you buy something to eat at Chick's.

Believe it or not, West Haven has several phones low enought that you don't have to get out of your car to use them - a drive thru payphone! While in the era of cellphones and the like this seems rather dull, I thought it one of the niftier things about West Haven's public services. It is nice if you are alone at night and don't have to get out of your car in a dimly lit parking lot to use the phone.

I am not a big fish fan and really hate the smell of fish in general. But despite also being a fish market, there is no old fish smell here- the seafood is that fresh.
Items are cooked to order. There are great combo platters with items such as shrimp, crabcakes, fish, etc. OF course, lobster and other standards appear. There are also many choices for those who do not like fish.
A basic that might not attract some, but I loved, was the fries. A HUGE portion cooked fresh when I ordered them, and they had no fishy taste from the oil or any other fried items.

Located at 1044 Chapel Street in Sherman's Alley, this tea shop boasts over 70 varieties of tea, which line the walls in individual glass bottles, baked goods and sandwiches. Few tea shops are available in Connecticut, much less in the Urban environment of New Haven Yale area. The few other tea shops I know of, while quant, have limited selection and is sort of more "little old ladies" go to tea. The tea selections here offer a much wider choice for the less traditional palate.
Sit for a specially-prepared pot of tea with a friend, or grab a delicious smoothie or bubble tea. I would love to find some others, but I know of no other place in CT for bubble tea. If you have not had bubble tea, it is green tea (but tastier than your typical 'acquired taste" type green) with tapicoa "bubble" balls - sort of the marshmellows in hot cocoa concept, but the tea infuses the balls and they have a sweet juicy quality in a drink that is very yummy but rather good for you.

I asked a friend who recently married where her and her new husband went on their first date. I was surprised to hear they went apple picking. I thought "how corny" and was really surprised this rather sophisticated woman that I had never even seen wear jeans and a t-shirt or sneakers for that matter, why would she be interested in such an activity? Yet she insisted that it was great.
Having always driven by but never looking around, I decided to take a look.
Bishop's Orchards in Guilford has a market as well. There are locally grown vegetables and specialty items including quiches, tea breads, fruit pies, apple crisps and dumplings, and apple cider doughnuts. (Yummy!)
There are also locally prepared soups and chowders and biscotti made in Guilford, as well as Connectict-grown plants and cut flowers.
The orchard offers pick-your-own raspberries and apples until mid-October.
Near the market is the Little Red Barn and Snack Shack, open noon until dusk, serving ice cream and beverages, and pie a la mode.
There are picnic tables with an orchard view as well as animals to visit, including alpacas and llamas.
If you are thinking of going, October is a great month to do so, as a large pumpkin patch is set up near the market, with pre-picked pumpkins arranged for families to make their choices. From April through November, hay ride tours of the orchard are available by reservation. You may want to call in advance for apple picking as well.

You may have heard of Pepe's for several reasons, it has been mentioned in Doonesbury comic, it was a favorite of President Clinton in his Yale days, and it is the pizza place that actually has a line going out the door.
There are many authentic aspects of Pepe's - it is a good pie, it smells wonderful and they use a HUGE brick oven -the kind necessary to make the kinds of pizza pies associated with Wooster Street, the Italian section of New Haven. It gives the crust an amazing crispiness. Waitresses run around like mad delivering pizzas.
As a proviso, I have not been to Pepe's within the last year or so, so I could be wrong. But I have lived here my whole life and have been going to Wooster street for years and have seen a decline when it was passed on to younger generations over a series of numerous visits.
They serve pizzas on a giant tray for your table, (you do not get a plate large enough to hold a slice, be prepared to be friendly with those you are sitting with). While the pizza is not "gooey", and you pick it up and with a small fold at the top, if you are not used to eating pizza this way, there is not much elbow room at the booths to use your fork and knife. Once, several years ago, they charged extra for the grated cheese jar, a feature I was not fond of. They explained kids like to play with the cheese, but I was not a kid and did not have kids in my party.
There is little to eat in the way of an appetizer, so you wait in line for sometimes over an hour, then order, then wait what feels like an eternity for your pizza, sans appetizers. If you go just at 5, you might slip in before the line starts. They serve liquor, as well as Foxon Park soda, a local retailer of a sweeter variation with less of a carbonated "bite" to it - some of the Italian type such as birch beer, a sweeter orange without being too sweet, etc.
Now there are several varieties of some unusual pizzas done well, clam with white sauce, etc.
If you have never been to Pepe's, and there is not too long a line or can do take out, then you may enjoy the pizza as a nice authentic variation. It is authentic Wooster Street, as is Sally's (less than a block or so from Pepe's) However, if you went to Pepe's in their hay day, when it was the original Frank, then you may be in for a disappointment, as it is not the quality of pizza, service or ingredients that Frank prided himself upon.
I would certainly be pleased to have a Pepe's pizza if there was not a line or someone got it for take out and brought it over, but I would no longer wait in line for it as I once would. However, whenever I have gone, there are never leftovers even though we always over-order out of hunger and anticipation. It is hard to find a pizza that is the nice crisp brick oven fire taste without being burnt and too crispy to taste the dough.
When guests come to visit from out of town, they frequently want to visit local places they have heard about, and I am somewhat disappointed at their choosing a Pepe's as I no longer feel it lives up to the hype. I do not wish to speak ill of them, but no longer consider them 'vacation destination' event sort of material, and at times feel my guests have left disappointed after hearing so much about Pepe's.
I would not recommend Pepe's for a date. I always felt alittle sorry for couples on what appeared to be an early date in their relationship. You spent at times, over an hour standing in line in close quarters not conducive to talking, and it seemed that by the time the couples get to sit and order and then have to wait for their pizza, they have run out of conversation and things seem awkward and they can't even talk about their food because it isn't there yet. If you have a mischevious streak, you may enjoy people watching and picking out these couples while you wait for your pizza. It is also quite loud, making chatting difficult.
But if you do not live in the area and have never had Wooster Street Pizza, you could have a good time. I would also recommend taking a walk down the street to the Italian Pastry shop, sit in the bistro like table, get expresso the way it was intended, and choose a lovely pastry or authentic Italian Ice in flavors that are done best in this sort of setting - lemon, cherry, and vanilla, which is a sweet italian vanilla.
