Lynn's Riding School is located near Forest park in Queens. There is another stables that services this park, but Lynn's is better for beginners, and lets face it: Most New Yorkers don't know which end of the horse is the front! I would recommend trying Lynn's even if you have never come near a horse in your life. The horses are extra gentle. As a bonus, Forest Park has some of the best bridle paths in New York City. In fact, you will have to keep reminding yourself that this wooded oasis is actually IN New York City.

You could go horseback riding in Central Park and spend $50 an hour... or you could ride for twice as long for the same money in beautiful Prospect Park, just over the bridge in the cool boro of Brooklyn. Kensington Stables is the place to go for the horses, lessons and all your equestrian needs. Staffed by lifelong horse-lovers, you'll have a day in the park you won't soon forget.

If you ask me what would be the coolest New york experience, I would have to say it is riding horseback on a cool autumn morning on a leafy bridle path in Central Park. That dream could be yours by reserving a horse at Claremont Stables. It is the last remaining stables servicing Central Park. Despite being a monopoly, this place does not take advantage of you. Prices are reasonable and the focus here is on taking good care of you and the horses.

I categorized Chelsea Piers in "Other" because it has a little of everything. There is a gym here, as well as a ton of other sports facilities. The story of Chelsea Piers is one of New York's great success stories. The only drawbacks are the location (it is practically in the Hudson River and a shlep from almost everywhere) and deciding what to do next!

What makes the Manhattan Plaza Health Club so special is its indoor climbing walls. The first tryout on these walls is free, and let me tell you, it is FUN. I came to this gym expecting to only use the treadmill and weights but I got hooked on the climbing walls. I liked the people I met there, also. So again, the story is: Nice gym, great climbing walls!

The name of the bookstore is Complete Traveller, and it really is comprehensive, just as the name suggests, and probably the best of its kind in the city. You can find practically any book related to travel here, and the store's staff qualify as experts. If you're serious about your travels, it's worth the trip down to Madison Avenue to check this out.

The Gravity gym at the Parker Meridian hotel is convenient to many workplaces in the city and has everything you need for a good workout. That said, it is in an expensive hotel and while the locker rooms are fantastic, the membership rates here are very high. One might be tempted to sign up for a membership that excludes use of the rooftop pool, but that would be a grave error. The pool is this gym's best sellng point. The view from the pool is breathtaking -- Central Park can be glimpsed -- and you can sun yourself right out on the deck. Celebrities stay at this hotel and it is common to see them in the pool also.

Asphalt Green has treadmills, weights and the like. I just want to say that right away because I am going to be talking for the rest of the time about the pool. The pool here is one of the best in all of New York City, and even Olympic hopefuls choose this pool to train in when they are in the city. The location is nothing special and convenient only to the Upper East Side. However, if you love to swim, it is worth the trip from even distant neighborhoods.

The 92nd Street Y is not the obvious choice as a gym because you only get the one location to exercise in (unlike the chain gyms that offer locations around the city). However, if you live nearby, it is a very worthwhile choice. The pool there is spacious and there is plenty of exercise equipment. My favorite part of the gym is that there is a huge jacuzzi spa right in the shower area so that you can work out the kinks and then shower off straight away.

Coliseum Books is a true blue local bookstore that just happens to be right across the street from the New York Public Library. If memory serves me, it use to be much closer to the New York Coliseum (which was torn down for the Time/AOL building) , but its current location makes a lot of sense. Coliseum Bookstore is centrally located and has a huge selection of books to choose from. It is a genuine alternative to the mega-chain stores and is convenient from practically everywhere.
