For years the Waverly, famous for a lyric in "Hair" stood empty and disruptive at the iconic, albeit somewhat seedy Village corner of Sixth Avenue and West Fourth Street. It has been reborn as the IFC Center, a three screen cinema haven with cafe (and soon restaurant) that is a destination for indie films and indie film lovers. Perhaps this will signal a new era for the area.

It's shelves and cases are crowded with beautiful, unusual ethnic finds for decorating the home and the body and its prices are reasonable. Silk scarves in all the colors of the rainbow, bowls and boxes of unique materials and patterns, all manner of one of a kind jewelry tempt and tantalize. Oh, and they even have a terrific selection of contemporary and antique beads.

In it's heyday, the Village Voice had liberal political clout and was a must read for anyone seeking intellectual cred or classifieds listing men and women seeking men or women. Personals have moved on to the web and been replaced in the back of the book by display ads picturing nearly naked men and women offering themselves for a variety of purposes. The Voice is now free, available each Wednesday evening all over Manhattan and while it's clout is questionable, it's listings are comprehensive, its articles are stimulating, it's critics are articulate and, hey, it's free.

The outdoor garden in back, open when it's not too hot and not too cold, is a delightful escape from the city. The tables on the street offer exccellent people watching. The service is exemplary and the prices are reasonable.
