The ne plus ultra of toy stores, the one from "Big", the one where the line outside for a month before Christmas makes you cringe. And the one that makes you feel like a kid again, makes you want to buy a toy even if you don't have a kid to buy one for. It's a landmark.

It's back, better than before. While the Queens incarnation of MoMA was an interesting diversion, the recently re-opened 53rd street site is everything it promised and then some. The space itself is magnificently designed to showcase the collection and the collection is, of course, a revelation. It's a delight to see old favorites in new spaces and, while some may quibble that Monet's water lilies are dwarfed in their new home, it's pointless to find fault when masterpieces confront you at every turn.

There are too many bead puns already. So here's the scoop. This unassuming storefront in what used to be called the garment district and now likes to think of itself as the fashion district is a destination for all things bead. Beads from the four corners of the globe and beads that look otherworldly, beads of glass, of silver, of clay. Beads in every color of the rainbow and every size. Beads with faces, beads in the shape of animals, beads of precious and semi precious stone. And findings in both base metal and silver. And tools for jewelry making. If beads are your thing this is the place.

Asia de Cuba may no longer be the hippest eatery on the block but it still has ambiance and attitude to spare. Before you blanch at the prices of the entress, be advised that the conceit of this establishment is that everything is served family style - whether you're a party of one or a family of six. Not a place for solo dining, to be sure. And for a couple, you have to be able to agree on what you'd like to eat. But if you can agree to agree you're in for a delicious dining experience.
An added plus, it's one of a limited number of NYC restaurants with a gluten free menu

Fronting an entire block on ninth avenue between 33rd and 34th street this is photographer's heaven. Digi or film, new or used you'll find everything you could possibly need to be the photographer you know you can be. The staff is helpful if distracted and the system is convoluted and confusing - in order to purchase anything you must have a sales person print out a receipt, then go to a cashier to pay, then pick it up at a third station but the prices are the best in town and somehow the system works. That explains the line of people waiting for the place to open.
Be aware that B&H observes all Jewish holy days and is closed from midday Friday through Saturday and opens on Sunday.

With five screens featuring the latest indie films, this Soho/Village staple has for years been a destination for those seeking a bit more stimulation than the suburban cineplex can offer. The cafe has too few seats, the food is overpriced and the coffee is weak but the people watching while you wait is always fascinating.
