Northfield transit has always kind of made me chuckle. Its really our only attempt at public transportation for those without cars and often seems a tad pathetic or lame in its utter lack of presence whenever you seem to need it. However, it does offer a much needed service to the community and does so at a reasonable price – making it difficult to be unappreciative.

The Northfield Care Center is a moderately sized retirement home and provides a very necessary service to the elderly of Northfield. The rooms are decently sized, the staff is friendly enough upon first impression and the location is just fine. And although I am certain that a loved one of mine would be fine in this facility, due to word of mouth reviews from others, I think I would prefer them at one of the other facilities in town.

River City Books is a cute bookstore with a fair collection of books and a decent selection of clothing merchandise. If you’re looking for a specific book this certainly wouldn’t be the right place to go (not a large enough selection) but if you’re searching for a gift, or shopping with a totally open mind, you could pick up something cute to sport some Northfield/College pride.

The Northfield Arts Guild is one of those businesses from which customers benefit in so many ways. Not only do they add culture to the community through supporting the arts in all mediums, they also have an adorable gallery downtown and a gift shop that is a joy to peruse. Items there are expensive, but not unreasonably so considering the merchandise. If you’re looking for a unique gift for someone that appreciates art, this is definitely a great place to shop.

The Northfield Historical Society is necessary in a city that is as proud of its story as Northfield is. I appreciate the society for what it is, and am a fan of appreciating history and understanding where we came from; however, I think that Northfield has a tendency to take this all a bit far at times. A tour through the little museum once is necessary as a resident of the town, but after that there’s not much to merit a return visit to the small museum and its unimpressive gift shop.

Grundy’s is lovingly referred to as the ‘townie’ bar by the college students of St. Olaf and Carleton. If you’re a twenty something from Northfield and you’re not ok with running into people you know from the past, it should be avoided. It’s always smoky and sometimes dirty but offers the typical small town bar experience. And their burgers are amazing.

I haven’t been to The Southgate Cinema in years. Ever since they chopped their large screen into two smaller screens, I can’t seem to make myself pay to sit through a movie that runs off the sides of the screen. However, if you’re looking to see a flick with the kids on a Sunday afternoon and don’t feel like driving up to Lakeville, Southgate would suit you just fine.

The market is not a store I often enter, but it has adorable item out on the street. I kind of like the ‘bazaar’ feel it gives to its section of Division street. And while, I personally think that The Market is outdone by its neighbor Swag; if you’re into more antique-ish style decorating rather than a more modern trendy look, The Market would suit you wonderfully.

Lansing Hardware employed most of my friends in high school so I went there to visit friends more than anything else. However, as I’ve now worked in a carpenter’s shop for a few years – I don’t often find that Lansing is my choice of hardware stores in town. They really are rather comparable to the other places in town, but I might argue that their selection is slightly more limited.

Three Links Care Center is the most comprehensive and quality ‘retirement complex’ in town. They offer living options for elderly at all stages, anywhere from assisted living to full care and they do so in a professional manner. The Center is well organized, the staff is friendly and the facility is new. Residents are lucky to be at Three Links Care Center.
