Skylark's is an institution in Fairhaven - the place to go for weekend breakfast. Whether it's residents or tourists who make it so popular is hard to say. It certainly exudes the sort of home-y charm that appeals to a certain age set. Old advertising prints hang on the walls, there's a fireplace in one corner, the windows have stained glass at the top. But it works. It feels a bit like going to your aunt's house for Sunday breakfast.
Really, breakfast is the meal I would recommend Skylark's for. Perhaps it's just that my expectations for breakfast are so much lower (anything other than cereal is a treat), but it seems to me that this is the only meal that Skylark's really exceeds my expecations in making. At lunch, their clam chowder suffers from sandy clams and bland flavor. Their dinners aren't very flavorful. But breakfast? Perfect toast, beautiful omlettes, and my mother claims that they have the best scrambled eggs she's ever tasted. New renovations have added plenty of seating to the restaurant, so if you've stayed away for fear of the breakfast crowd, now's your oppurtunity.

This is what Mexican food should be. Giant portions- heaping mounds of rice, a pool of baked beans, a crab enchilada covered from one end to the other in cheese and sauce, flautas crisp and fresh. Sure, it's not the healthiest stuff around, but if it tastes this good, who cares?
The restaurant itself is almost cheesily authentic- Spanish music plays in the background, the staff calls patrons "amigo" or "amiga," the decorations all look like souveniers someone's aunt would bring back as gifts. But service is usually so prompt that you don't have much time to sit and stare, so who cares? Indulge yourself.

I first went to Sehome Cleaners to have a pair of pants hemmed, and they've since become my primary source for any work of this sort. The turnaround on getting something mended or altered isn't usually as fast as getting something cleaned, but I believe one woman does all that work, rather than the team who do all the dry cleaning. I think it's worth it- they've got a great location and she does really wonderful work. My silk sweater was snagged, and the repair is almost invisible.

Every town has a place like this. Somewhere that's almost unbearably cool, occupies a niche market, and is unbeatably fantastic. Perhaps it's not something you think you need, but if it's available, why not visit?
Juice It is awesome. The brick walls, the high countertop, the wheatgrass sitting on a shelf above an industrial grade juicer- the ambience is perfect. Just going in feels like you're doing something right. Ordering something, you know you've done good. Even on my worst days I know I'll feel better after stopping by- fresh raw fruits vegetables are so much easier to get down when they're in liquid form. I'd especially recommend that anyone with a cold this winter stop by for a cup of hot apple cider. Served with lemon and cinnamon, it soothes the throat and gives you a healthy dose of vitamin C.

I love places like this. Cute little bakeries, tucked into a narrow shop that turns out to be slightly bigger on the inside than one would think, and to serve better food than one would expect. La Vie en Rose certainly serves a wide variety of things- from scones and cookies to pasta salad and sandwiches. It's a great place for a quick lunch or to grab something on the go.
My only caution? If you're getting a slice of pizza (square pieces, served cold- though I'm sure you could have it warmed up), make sure to find out what the ingrediants are. The tend to put the cheese on top of everything else, making it a bit of a mystery to know what's underneath. It can be great, or a disaster. I was served a slice with far too salty, large green olives hidden throughout. The juices from the olives had seeped to the rest of the pizza, making it far to salty to enjoy.

Sure, the prices are good and it's close to campus- both requirements for the typical broke, starving college student. But there are many, many better restaurants around. The seats are uncomfortable, the plates are made of cheap plastic (though I guess the boat shape is pretty cute), the portions aren't that generous, and the meat is of rather inferior quality. Nor do they have a very good terriyaki sauce- which I thought was a requirement for a Japanese chef. It's rather oily and unflavorful, and does very little to help their stringy chicken.

Going to Meconi's is always a delight. You quickly realize what a difference fresh ingrediants and decent service makes in a sandwich- and how bland those other sub places are. I'm personally devoted to the BLT sub, but by all means, stop by and try something else. You're guaranteed to love it.
The locations themselves seem a bit bland- the Capitol location less so than the Lacey one- but who cares, with food this good? Service is relatively quick, good for those on their lunch hour. I usually buy a whole sub, as they wrap their sandwiches in tin foil, so they keep rather well. For orders over $20, delivery is available.

With coffee, as with everything, freshness matters. Fortunately for Olympia, the coffee served at Dancing Goats is brewed minutes away at the Bartdorf and Bronson roasting plant. It makes a world of difference between the coffee served here, and the coffee served at the corporate clone chains which have their beans shipped in from around the world, months after they've been roasted. In fact, to get some idea of how good The Dancing Goats is, take a look at Batdorf and Bronson's website- www.batdorf.com It should give you some idea of how seriously they take their product.

Cresswell Boggs is almost unapologetically a woman's store. What I mean by this is that it's filled with cute cards, picture frames, jewelry, and wrapping paper, all of a high quality and all at prices that men would be unlikely to want to pay. I believe it's worth it, though, especially for the cards. They truly are unique, full of wit and charm. They have an especially large collection of cards with photographs on the front, if you're into that sort of thing.

Film is Truth is your place for the rare, the indie, the foreign, and the great. Sure, they do carry Hollywood's latest, but not 47 copies like certain other stores might. FIT is more a place to go with the clerk's recommendation, check out something you probably would have otherwise missed.
