First Avenue used to be a great venue. It was never pretty. You did NOT want to look around too closely when the lights came up after a show. However, they used to have great bands all the time. That was the days of Husker Du, Prince, Soul Asylum and the Replacements.
Fast forward to now… Unfortunately, they just don’t have that many good shows anymore. What once was the premier alternative club now seems like they can’t get many bands. I really hope that First Ave can pull out of this slump.

The LEGO Imagination Center in the Mall of America is a must see during your visit to the giant monument to capitalism. I am always amazed at the huge LEGO sculptures in, around, and above the store.
When I was a kid there weren’t a billion LEGO kits for every movie, activity, or interest, there were just big boxes of LEGOs. That said, it is amazing to see how far they have come.

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is a nice oasis right next to downtown Minneapolis. Wandering through the sculptures is a great date night activity (and probably makes you look at bit more cultured than you really are). The little conservatory in the park provides views of some plants you won’t often see in the frozen tundra we call home.
Worth every penny of admission! ;)

I think you need to be a certain type of person to really enjoy the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. If you are here reading a review and wondering if you should go, it is likely not for you. I find most of the performers annoying and the attendees are worse. Feigned English accents are like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

I really like the Breadsmith bakery. I think that their prices are a little high, but one can not find good hearty bread easily these days. I especially like their multi-grain and their cranberry flaxseed rolls.
Cons: Stay away from their mini muffins, they are not a very good deal. Fork over a little more dough (get it?) and get the maxi muffin!

The City Pages is a great local weekly paper. Sure, they have a lot of ads, but what do you expect for the price? Dig a little deeper and you will find well written articles, good local arts and events coverage, and funny columns (not the least of which is “savage love”). Pick up a copy on your way out of that coffee shop… It won’t bite.

The Timberwolves are a great basketball team for the fans to get into. They are certainly not a dynasty, like a few clubs have been, but there is a lot to like. The best aspect is the big ticket, KG. He always plays hard and I was glad to see him get the MVP for the 2003 2004 season.
However, there is a lot to dislike as well. The recent contract negotiations with Sprewell and Cassell leave a lot to be desired. Plus we can’t seem to get a decent center.
That said, play ball! I'll be watching.

Given the location of Calhoun Square it seems it should be so much more. There is so much in the area and so many people, that I would have expected this mall to be much better. However, there are a couple of nice restaurants there and a few nice shops. So it is still worth a walk through when you are uptown.

I had a tattoo done at Visual Addiction a couple of years ago. I had not ever done such a thing, but was happy to find that the guys at Visual Addiction were friendly and gave good advice. They were happy to talk through my ideas, share some opinions, then they did a great job on my tattoo. I would go there again and would recommend them to others.
