Do you like salads? I love salads, and Il Fornaio has taken salads to their peak with their courtyard cafe located in the center of the main floor of Pacific Place in the heart of downtown Seattle. It is only open for lunch. They also have some very nice sanwiches, soups and pizza slices, along with cookies and soft drinks, and coffee drinks. However, the salads are to rave for. You grab a base, cut romain, or a wild leaf mix. Then you hand it over to the counter person who adds your choice of five additions to the lettuce. They have too many selections for me to remember then all, so I will go back and write them down to add to this post at a later date. The counter person tosses your personalized salad with your choice of dressing and hands it back to you to pay for at the end of the counter. Salad lovers convene here!

The Seattle Deli, a take out deli, located in the International District of Seattle is famous for their sandwiches. They are large sandwiches made out of a foot long baguette. They are filled with your choice of meat, salad (thinly julienned carrots, daikon, cucumber with daikon sprouts, cilantro and jalepeno pepper). These sandwiches are quite reasonably priced, most are under $2.00. There are other selections as well, an asian smoothie drink and a steam table of interesting hot items. My advice is to call your order in ahead as at times there can be quite a line.

The Lemongrass is located in the international district of Seattle. It's on the ground floor of retail complex that includes free parking underneath. I don't know if they serve dinner or not, I went there for lunch. The food was fabulous. I had something called a Vietnamese crepe, which is a crepe made of rice flour, water and something to make it yellow, either food coloring or a spice. Cooked into the top are green onions, shrimp and pork, but they can hold any of these items if you so desire. The crepe comes with fresh vegetables that are meant to be eaten with pieces of the crepe folded into a leaf of lettuce then dipped in a sauce. This is an incredibly messy, yet entirely satisfying dish. Some of the servers may not know English too well, but they will get someone who does to help if need be. Most of the customers are Asian, and it's a good place to hear Asian languages. It's very child friendly as well. Everyone should eat here! This is a fabulous restaurant in an area of town where the competition between restaurants is high, many come an many go. Let's keep the Lemongrass busy!

The Blue C Sushi restaurant is located in the heart of the universe, also known as Fremont. It has a loft bar and the restrooms are located downstairs below the restaurant. If you go to the Blue C, you must visit the bathrooms! I don't know about the mens, but the womens is covered with pictures of people in Japan dressed in some of the days fashions there. The fashion wall is a must see. Also the hand dryer is rather unusual, at least for Seattle. OK, now for the food. The sushi and other food is placed on little color coded plates and then set on a track that passes by the tables. You simply take what you want from the track. The food is really good. My favorites are avocado roll, the spinach with brown sauce and the tofu with chili sauce, edame and daikon sprouts. Each color plate is a different price ranging form $1.50 to $4.50. Most people probably spend about $10.00 to eat there, but you could get away with as little as $1.50, if you're not that hungry, or you could spend up to $20.00 or $30.00 depending on your selections. When you're all done, or if you need service, there is a blue button to push to summon the server. When finished the server will tally up the number of plates you have in each color and your drinks and present you with the bill.

The Hilltop Alehouse located on the top of Queen Anne Hill on Queen Anne Avenue, is friendly pub with great food in the $7.00 to $10.00 range. In addition to the excellent selection of micro-brew and UK beers on tap and pacific northwest sandwiches entrées and salads, they serve my favorite black iced tea. The main bar has many tables in addition to the bar. There is also a garden room in the English tradition, but sadly, this is America, and you can't bring the kids to the garden room for dinner. It is a bar and no minors are permitted. Smoking is also not permitted, which is a bonus to those of us who have severe allergic reactions to cigarette smoke. So remember, no kids and no smokes, just good brews, wine and food.

El Diablo Coffee Co. is located on the top of Queen Anne Hill onthe main boulevard of Queen Anne Avenue. The atmosphere is, well, demonic in a "Carnival" sort of way. After all, "el diablo" is spanish for the devil. The walls are covered in brightly painted folk art depicting of course El Diablo and other legendary figures. Each table depicts it's own theme or scene. These folks are fabulous with java, (Okay, so a Cuban coffee is really just the Cuban version of a carmellized shot or two of expresso.) and the desserts truely are sinfully good. They also do sandwhiches, salads and soup, all with a Cuban influence. I figure the "devil" theme is to poke fun at the fact that we as a mass culture decide that desserts and caffiene are unhealthy, yet we're going to consume them anyway. However, if you think the theme of the folk art would upset you, don't go, there's always a Starbucks around for a nice sterile unoffensive environment.

The Agua Verde Paddle Club is located in the University district on the cannal that links Lake Washington and Lake Union. It's a cafeteria style restaurant, you place your order, then pay at the cash register where you recieve your drinks and a paper mache fruit so that the server can find you with your food. Then you have a choice of three rooms and two outdoor decks, one covered, to find a table in. The covered deck is staight out from the main room, and overlooks the canal. The rooms are all brightly coloered using vibrant green, blue and pink for the different rooms. The other deck is off of the pink room and only usable during good weather.
The food here is fabulous. They make all their food from scatch. Many of the selections use fresh fish. All of the food comes from certified organic wholesellers. There are vegitarian options as well. If you want to go to Mexico without leaving the state, eat here, you won't be dissapointed.

Malena's is a little "hole in the wall" Mom and Pop type restaurant on Queen Anne that caters mostly to take out. By "hole in the wall", I mean it is small, very small with a down home feel to it.There is some limited seating, bar style against the front window with approximately four tables inside and at least one table on the sidewalk outside where you can keep an eye on Fido and still enjoy really good homestyle Mexican food. Every order is made from scratch, utilizing freshly prepped ingredients, so special requests are not difficult for them to accomedate. Both English and Spanish are spoken by the employees, who by the way are very friendly. Malena's is low tech and only accepts cash or checks. It isn't hard to find, located between 6th and 7th streets on McGraw. Look for the place with a line out the door as us locals have already discovered it!

My husband and I were looking for a place to celebrate our anniversay. We wanted someplace with excellent food and a romantic atmoshpere. Friends had told me about a place near our house called Pasta Freska. It sits on a traingular plot of land and the building footprint somewhat resembles an arrowhead. The front door is located at the tip or point. The building is really unassuming, it looks like a typical pizza joint, and in fact, during the day they serve pizzas and grinders. .However at night, the chef takes over and begins to play. He creates the most amazing gormet dishes.
We had checked out several places and it was getting late, around nine pm. My husband an I peered tentatively in the front door. We saw no customers and were sure that was a bad sign. Fortunately, one of the servers saw us and urged us to enter. She asked us if we would like to sit outside, and to our delight Pasta Freska has a charming outside deck located a half story up on th rear side of the buiding.
Pasta Freska is very different from most restraunts. Fist, there is no menu. For those of you who have trouble deciding what to eat, this is the place! Your server will sit down with you and ask you questions to determine what to serve you. Drink selections are based on what is being served to you and your selection in general terms. In other words, don't look for a wine list, there isn't any.
We were served garlic bread, an appetiser of eggplant, artichoke and cheese on a bed of red sauce, lightly dressed salad seasoned with myzithe cheese, a seafood pasta with enormous prawns and chunks of fish, a bowtie pasta with meat sauce and a stuffed chicken breast masala. Dessert consisted of tiramisu, spumoni ice cream and a chocolate torte. The food was beyond fabulous. We requested a glass of wine and the server brought out a very lovely merlot. She left the bottle with us, so we could choose to have more if we wished. It was truely an enchanting dining experience and worth every penney of it!
